I Thought I'd Do Our Retrospective In 'Antic Slab' Tonight
Just because I can. You know Conrad, as whimsical as a butterfly*. Of course we still need a clickbait image to tempt the punters in, so allow me to focus my mind on that for a moment or two. Won't be long, that party going on in my head 24/7 is always productive of content.
I think I see an 'in' -
This is a fantastic cover illustration from the Arrow 1975 edition, and the one I bought because of the cover. It shows, in the foreground, the squeaky clean public image of the Apollo program, a Lunar lander in the background, and the staring eyes of a terrified astronaut experiencing a mental breakdown in between. The novel itself is pretty cold and bleak, and do you know, I cannot remember if there's a happy ending or not. Probably not.
Who is the artist? Like a lot of science fiction books, the publishers don't bother to inform we the buying public. However, doing a little background poking and noseying reveals that it was by David Bergen, whom also did a cover illo for another sci-fi novel I never managed to finish. Art!
This one is also rather bleak, from what I remember, and because I cheated and looked at the end, I know it doesn't end happily. The spacesuit is coloured orange and white in order to stand out for emergency purposes, which means Dave read the book.
Blimey. This was supposed to be a few scribbled lines and we're a quarter of the way towards the Compositional Ton. Good thing? Bad thing? Only you can tell!
