Welcome To Beautiful Mordor!

Yes, You Read That Correctly

No!  This is not a veiled reference to Ruffians and Borcs, even if there is a bonkers advert out there that tries to put a positive gloss on living in their miserable North-Korea-Writ-Larger pariah state.  Art!

Hay Pesto! here's the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, a statelet within Serbia, which now has a GDP ten times bigger than the Ruffians.  Let's prod Art with this handy cattle prod and bring him awake -

ANYWAY I meant the 'real' Mordor, from what people call Tolkein's 'Legendarium', meaning not merely "The Lord Of The Rings" but also "The Hobbit" and "The Silmarillion", which amounts to a tremendous amount of words.  I salute In Deep Geek for his careful sifting through oceans of text to bring illumination to us folk who have full-time jobs.  Art!

Mordor to lower starboard

You can see instantly what made Sauron fall in love with the place; it's bounded on three sides by mountain ranges, making it ridiculously difficult to assail and easy-peasy to defend.  Now, what you and Frodo are both focussed on is the Plateau of Gorgoroth, in the upper port of the map.  Let me see if a repeat prod will produce results from Art -

It's not a nice place.  For one thing, Orodruin, better known as 'Mount Doom', is always belching forth flames and, most especially, ash and smoke.  "Mordor" is the Elvish Sindarin word for "Land of the Shadow", after all.  The PoG itself is riven with mines and forges and craters and spoil heaps and noxious fumes, nothing grows there AT ALL.  Art!

However - and you knew that word was coming, didn't you? - all that volcanic ash has a benefit.  The southern portion of Mordor is called Nurn, and prevailing winds have carried volcanic ash there for millenia.  Art!

The soil is extremely fertile and the Sea of Nurnen provides water for irrigation; this region is where Sauron's slaves toil in agricultural labour in order to provide food for the orc hordes.  There is a third region within the Land of the Shadow, namely - Art!

Lithlad, by gad

This area doesn't get the benefit of fertile, ash-enriched soil,  so it's not as green and pleasant as Nurn; on the other hand, it's not a foul barren rocky wasteland, either, so not all bad.

There you have the unseen Mordor, which their Tourist Board would do well to emphasise, because there's only so many people who are willing to do Extreme Walking In A Poisonous Wilderness, nor are there that many vulcanologists willing to visit a dangerously active volcano.

Cheaty McBeaty

Another short exploit of Smokey Yunick, a man who was mechanically gifted, surpassingly sly and probably not a man to play poker with.

As a NASCAR mechanic he was hired by Richard Petty, whom I'd never heard of before, to get more miles out of his car.  art!

Richard having a sit

Richard is one of the most successful NASCAR drivers of all time, and part of that success was down to Smokey.  Since the judges, marshalls and referees had discovered his sneaky trick with a basketball, he had to get creative, which he did.  Art!

That's the normal diameter of a Pontiac fuel line.  Art!

That's how long they are.  Smokey realised that fuel lines weren't regulated, so he took 11 feet of 2-inch fire hose and used that for Richard's Pontiac, which meant the car got an additional 5 gallons of fuel, until the marshalls caught on and banned it.

     Inventive chap.

More of Ned's Atomic Dustbin ...

The band, not The Goon Show script, which in fact refers to an ANTI-atomic dustbin, thank you very much.  My pal Richard, now retired in Spain (jammy get!) put a Comment in on the blog, as he occasionally does RICHARD'S DESCENDANTS WILL AVOID ORGAN-DONATION OR URANIUM MINING when my starship invasion fleet gets here.  Art!

Allow me to add-in his words:

I saw Ned`s a number of times, twice at the Reading Festival, once at Galstonbury, once at Cardiff University Student Union and the last time at Newport Centre. I still own and wear my "Happy" tour shirt which has lettering that glows in the dark :) Don`t forget to Kill your Televison........
"Don't forget to Kill Your Television" is what's missing.  Must be a song.  Definitely not advice I'd give out.  How would I live without Netflix?

"The Sea Of Sand"

We jump away from exotic alien locales and desperate desert battles to the orderly calm hundreds of miles away.

Seventeen:  Both Ends Versus the Middle

The neatly–dressed sergeant sitting at the radio desk with his headphones on looked up then shook his head at Major Hampson when the latter entered the room.  The radio log contained only a few routine messages, nothing at all from the Depot at Martuba.

‘Nothing doing, sir,’ apologised the sergeant.  ‘I’ve tried every twenty minutes for the past three hours.’

‘Still no joy, eh?’ commented Hampson.  ‘It’s not looking very rosy.’

Outside a train whistle tooted mournfully, becoming fainter as the locomotive pulled away from the railhead at Mersa Matruh.

Hampson felt worried, without showing it in front of the sergeant.

‘Could it be atmospherics?’ he asked.  Reception in the desert could be the very devil.  Once they had picked up the guttural exchanges of German units on manouevres in the Balkans, and occasionally picked up snatches from naval convoys in the Med.

‘Doubt it, sir.  I’ve been in touch with Benghazi and Tobruk, reception’s a bit crackly but no problem otherwise.’

Damn it! What the hell was going on down there? mused Major Hampson.

First came a report from Middle East HQ, Brigadier Dorman-Smith no less, saying that his own private band of desert pirates, Jolyon Force, had fought a battle with infernal devices of Italian design.  Fought it in the middle of the supply depot at Martuba, mind you.  Lots of casualties, including dozens of Italian prisoners.

Well, gentle readers, we know, don't we?

What's In A Word?

It rather depends what language you're talking about.  "Seol-Jeep" in Korean means a type of hostelry that sells their equivalent of  'pub grub' and alcoholic beverages.  Art!

You'll have to imagine the beer

Another Korean word, 'Maripkan', went out of use in the sixth century, being substituted by the Chinese word 'Wang' NO SNIGGERING AT THE BACK!

Korean words for philosophical terms also came into use for government departments, inspired by Confuscianism, such as "Chung" for 'Loyalty'*.  There was "In" for "Benevolence", "Ui" for "Righteousness", "Chi" for "Wisdom" and "Sin" for "Honesty".  Go on, there's at least a couple of jokes in there.  Conrad thinks that these are loan-words from the Chinese and wonders where "Kim Chee" arrived from, O thou wise cabbage and radish dish**.

There you go, we're all better informed than we were five minutes ago.  All part of the service.

Finally -

Hmmmmm dangerous times for the Iranian theocratic dictatorship, who have been challenged by the protests that have been taking place for the past 70 days.  Now, apparently, their entirely immoral 'Morality Police' are being disbanded, which is a concession they may come to regret.  Protesters seeing change being caused by their bolshiness, not remotely bothered by the state's instant resort to mass murder, may become even bolder.

Of course - obviously! - Peter The Average is looking on in a state of mild panic, as he can't get his chug-chug drones from anywhere else.

*

Sorry, couldn't resist

**  Darling daughter was banging on about how Kim Chee kills millions from botulism.  Well, yes, but they were human, weren't they?

I Thinks -

Of Links

Because I've only just got in from the office.  At 19:00 I was off out the office door like a streak of white-haired lightning, power-walking down Queensway to reach Rochdale Road -

     - just in time to see the 409 sail majestically past.

O well.  I consoled me with an Extra-Large Donner Kebab from the Fish And Chip shot; I did ask for a mere Large one but the server misheard.  The one I got last Wednesday lasted me for three meals, so it's actually saving money.  Art!

The small version

I had the last laugh, mind, because as the later 409 came to The Summit, Lo! there was the previous 409 bus - broken down.  This is because First Bus's maintenance schedule is slacker than the Ruffian army.

     ANYWAY! On with the links.

Check This Out

Greetings, Humans!
Er - FELLOW humans, that is.  Your Humble Scribe got away from work early tonight, as England are playing a ballfoot game in The Word Coupe (sp?) or some such shizzle.  As any fule kno, Conrad cares not a whit about the ballfoot game, but is quite happy to take an opportunity and grasp it in both sausage-fingered mitts.
Now, because I've not even had any tea, nor yet made tomorrow's lunch, I'm going to cheat and post ANOTHER set of links, because I can, and it's not as if anyone is paying to read this scrivel, are they?  Art!

Phew!

Blogger Has Re-Set After Yesterday's Brain-Fart

You remember, hundreds upon hundreds of Canuckistanians were loyally logging-on to read BOOJUM! because it had been declared compulsory reading for students doing English Literature and Language courses, yes, even in Quebec.  Now, because numbers are boring and it's bad manners to begin an Intro by blowing one's own trumpet, let us instead have - Art!

I say, she looks rather cross, doesn't she?  They probably laced her stays up a bit too tight.

     ANYWAY the evidence.  Art!

Hey, we still have readers in Ruffia, all 4 of them!  Plus one each in Romania, Indonesia and Japan.
ANYWAY I'm going to post a set of links, because I feel like it.  Conrad also needs to point out I shan't be getting home much before 20:00 tomorrow, so expect another set of links, which behaviour may continue to Wednesday.

In The Zone

A.K.A. I Want His Job
No!  Nothing to do with the series of near-future war novels by James Rouch, which make rattling good reads, even if the Soviet Union is long gone and unmourned (except by Peter The Average).  Art!
Meet the 'Iron Cow' - next gen APC

I refer, of course - obviously! - to Tom Scott, that international globe-trotting investigator of all things arcane and unusual.  He seems to get paid for doing things that you and I have to pay for ourselves, the lucky sw
ANYWAY what do "Batman" and "Star Trek" have in common?  Yes yes yes, doubtless they featured the same character actors, which is code for I Can't Be Bothered To Check.
     WRONG!  Art?

I really don't need to tell you which is which, do I?
Tom explained that, thanks to union rules, the Hollywood film and television studios could shoot within a radius of 30 miles from their headquarters and only pay the cast and crew from when they arrived.  If they shot beyond that limit, they had to pay for travel time and mileage, which makes it much more expensive.  So, film and television studios always on the lookout for a cheap fix, this meant that a lot of external locations were filmed within the Thirty Mile Zone.  Art!

This is Bronson Canyon, well inside the TMZ, just begging to be dressed and rendered into the Batcave's secret entrance.  Check the picture above.  There is far less greenery about the place because I can guarantee that there are tours of "Where 'Batman' was filmed".  Art!
I should have added "Bill And Ted"

Here an aside.  Conrad is firmly convinced that Keanu Reeves will never be out of work in Hollywood because he is so resoundingly nice.  Crew and cast alike agree on this, which is what casting directors remember.  You wait and see, he'll still be getting cast when he's 75.
ANYWAY these are the Vasquez Rocks, which happen to be all of 29 miles from the centre of Hollywood, so if a studio needed a particular angled granite outdoor shoot, this is where they came.  Tom says that they were used as a backdrop so often that they have their own Wikipedia page.  Conrad will let you, gentle reader, check on that.
A smart Commenter on his vlog also pointed out that a lot of alien planets look surprisingly similar to the terrain outside Vancouver, in British America, because a fair few Canuckistanian television shows pretend to be South Canadian - like "Travelers".  Art!

The sharp-eyed British television viewer will have noticed that a suspiciously large number of alien planets on the BBC's premier dramamentary series "Doctor Who" resemble a disused quarry.  Sheer coincidence, one presumes.

Rabbie Burns Rides Again
Conrad loathes poetry and avoids it just as much as he avoids musicals, except when it can be ruthlessly exploited in the name of the blog.  So, recall "O wad some power the giftie gie us, to see oorselves as others see us".  TRANSLATION "O would some power give us the gift of being able to see ourselves as others do".  Art!

The BBC roped in three Ukrainian refugee women, who are not unattractive and with pretty good (plus a charming accent and a few grammatical slips) English.  Svitlana, in the middle, started to learn English when reading Peppa Pig to her daughter*.  What surprised her about England was fashion; she found it hard to understand why people wore big puffer jackets but went around with 'naked legs'.  Me too, love.
Inna, to port with the curly locks, was rather baffled about beer drinking.  In This Sceptred Isle we drink beer all year long, but in Ukraine it's reserved for the summer months.  Inna, dear, if we drank only during the British summer that would amount to fourteen days spread out over four months.  Unsurprisingly, she also found British accents a tad hard to follow.  Never visit Glasgow.
Olena, to starboard, found it hard to comprehend that, yes, you can drink water straight out of the tap.  Poor lass, she got a bit choked up about settling down here instead of back home.
     Slava Ukraina!

More Of Smokey McCheaty
As I explained yesteryon, Smokey Yunick was a NASCAR mechanic who stretched the rules to their elastic limit in seeking to get a mechanical edge in stock-car racing.
One trick he had was in spoofing how much petrol his team's car could carry.  Art!

The referees/judges/eagle-eyed auditors measured how much fuel a tank held by filling it and then emptying out the fuel into a measuring vessel
Smokey used an extra-large fuel tank that held at least a gallon more fuel than permitted.  He got round the measurement by putting a basketball in the tank and inflating it, thus reducing the amount measured, and when the volume had been assessed, why he deflated the basketball, removed it and topped up the tank.
Thank heavens this chap was a professional mechanic.  He would have made a dangerous criminal.

"The Sea Of Sand"
Sorbusa's self-sacrifice has permitted the Doctor to escape un-noticed from the Earth trans-mat platform.

Another realisation hit the Doctor.  The sledge on Wasteworld (the nickname he now gave to Delta Pavonis) had been stuck beyond the trans-mat platform.  When he got sent through with the rest of the sledge, that overhanging remnant would fall to the ground – right on top of the control console.  About a tonne of metal.  Was it too much to hope that the control console on Wasteworld had been damaged?  At any rate, there had been no further materialisations on the platform.

Assault Leader Icono could hardly believe his eyes as he surveyed the conquered depot at Mersa Martuba.  The sprawling site they now ruled contained more minerals and metals than he had ever seen in one hundred and fifty years of life!  Incredible profligacy in their use of metals.  Why, there were whole vehicles constructed of metal, and a strange malleable substance made in circles that they travelled upon.  Prismatic containers constructed of what surely could not be wood?  That amount of frivolous use would have guaranteed several death sentences back home.

Minerals and metals in abundance, yet no great pickings of biomorphic energy.  A faint trace off to the west, not big enough to hunt down.  Very well then, they would order up scanning equipment from the Infiltration Complex, and use that to see who was where.

Gloat while you can, matey; the Doctor is back in town.

Sue Me
Conrad is rather chuffed that South Korea are through to the next stage of the World Cup Of Ballfoot.  Well done, chaps! and I wonder if any Norks are aware that their Sork brethren are doing so well.
The BBC had a Have Your Say Commentary on the match and there was uniform praise for the Sorks.  Here's just one example.

The three downvotes are probably Uruguayan players.  Art!

He plays for Tottinghand Hashspot (sp?) here in This Sceptred Isle.

Finally -
I've not posted any of the clues - that is, supposedly clues - and solutions from Lord Peter Wimsey's crossword as compiled by Dot Sayers.  Here we go then -
"Free of her jesses let the falcon fly, with sight undimmed into the azure sky"

And the solution?  How can it be anything but UNHOOD.
If you failed to solve it then that's your fault for not being up on your falconry.
22 Species?  Who knew!

The Seven Year Glitch

Aha!  Yes, That Is A Spectacularly Funny Pun

Because I say so, and it also means I can use that iconic shot of Marilyn Monro with her skirts flying up, because I know what you wretched perverts like to look at, so without further ado - Art!

Conrad is not claiming to be a physician but I think if you've had an itch for seven years you need to see a dermatologist, because otherwise you're going to bankrupt yourself and raise Sudofed's share price.
ANYWAY yesteryon being the First of December my Blogger stats all started from zero, as the algorithm functions on a 00:00:01 from the first day of the month to 59:59:59 on the last day.  By early evening it was up to 82, which is very respectable for an average Monday.
Things went slightly awry later that night.  Art!

The total for Monday had jumped to five times what it had been.  Erk!  In case you can't read that time in the bottom starboard corner, it's 00:15.  So - 122 visits in the space of 15 minutes?  A little unlikely.  Where were all these hits coming from, wondered Your Humble Scribe, and of course - obviously! - I had to check it out.  Art!

Canuckistan the problem.  Unless reading BOOJUM! has been raised to a requirement for all British Americans <thinks> studying English Literature and Language, this is surely a mistake.
"O but look at the traffic!" I hear you chortle.  "How flattering!"
WRONG!  These figures are wildly inaccurate and I've no idea what the real ones are.
Today's title comes from a similar run of algorithm-has-been-at-the-gin from seven years ago, when BOOJUM! was getting ridiculously high daily totals, up to 900 daily.  The thing is th
"Did someone say 'Thing'?"

<sighs> No, Mac, it's alright, we were talking about The Fantastic Four, you can go sit back in the freezer.
ANYWAY Conrad's worry was that the people and business entities that he is always slagging-off (which barristers and solicitors know as 'slander') would be far more likely to become aware of his irreverant (and illegal) attitude and he'd get a 'Cease And Desist' order from the courts; that or a fine.

The previous glitch went on for weeks.  One wonders how long this one will run for.

Conrad Is Impressed

As Darling Daughter came up to visit, we three decided to sit down and watch "Everything Everywhere All At Once", which title turns out to actually quite an accurate description of the plot.  Art!

I thought it was brilliantly bonkers entertaining, both funny and poignant, definitely my favourite film of 2022.  The thin - er - the meat of the matter is that is propels itself along at such a pace that you'd need to see it at least thrice to pick up all the nuances and symbolism and really awesome martial arts and the jumping around between different realities.  It did remind me, in some ways, of "The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension", which is high praise indeed.

Conrad Is ANGRY!

Just because we've not been railing against Codewords does NOT mean that 1) they've been forgotten or 2) I have failed to complete any.  In fact, the two most recent I've completed were entirely without problems, which is a two-edged sword, since it doesn't harm my blood pressure but doesn't generate blog content, either.

"OFFISH": Er - what?  Yesteryon DD and I were discussing that classic Korean dish, kimchee, and she came out with an urban legend about how it was high-risk in terms of botulism, so you could call it 'Offish' I suppose?  Yet no.  My Collins Concise defines it as "Aloof or distant in manner".  Art

The poster boy for 'Offish'

"DAUPHIN": Egad!  Not only do we now have to be working experts on the monarchy, we have to be working experts on FRENCH monarchy.  This is going beyond obscure.  The title refers to the oldest son of the French king, even though it went out of use in 1830.  So, working experts on French monarchy as it was two hundred years ago?  BAH!  Art?

Close enough

"PUTSCH": Nope, nothing to do with golf.  Defined in ithe CC as "A violent and sudden uprising, or a political revolt."  What Peter The Average fears and what angry phone-factory workers are undertaking in The Populous Dictatorship.  Art!

This lot are cheerful for Ruffians

"The Sea Of Sand"

Sorbusa has decided on a self-sacrificing last stand, to ensure the Doctor escapes via trans-mat from Homeworld to Earth, free from pursuit.

After a brief exchange of darts with encroaching Warriors, Sorbusa felt a dozen daggerlike impacts hit him as the Warriors regained their wits.  Painful, and debilitating.  He staggered sideways, falling against the massive base of the HQ Building.

No stunners.  They must not send him into unconsciousness.  Pretending to be battered into senselessness, he allowed the enemy to close in on him, suffering several shards shot into him just to test.

A last adrenaline surge allowed him to press the shard-thrower against the energy-cell of the stunner,  pulling the trigger hard, and feeling a sudden wash of heat over him, his dying senses not registering the full blast of the ruptured weapon, which sent explosive echoes rolling around the complex, and scattered Warrior bodies like leaves in the wind.

Scrabbling away from the clinking pile of bottles, the Doctor realised Sorbusa had deliberately given up his life to allow the Time Lord to escape.  The confusion, fighting and explosion managed just that, with the Doctor sneaking away to the south of Makin Al-Jinni.

For a pensive minute he looked back over the site.  Scores of Warriors congregated around the skirmish site, where the heretic had died.

Probably come to feed off the life energy of their wounded comrades, the ghouls!  How can they do that?  Lack of positive role model, perhaps.  Sorbusa managed to develop a conscience in a surprisingly short time, given the sterling example of me.

     No false modesty there.

Replete With Cheat

No, nothing to do with Conrad and the blog, rather a response to a question on Quora: Who is the biggest lying cheater in the history of pro sports?

You will immediately realise that this is completely out of Conrad's comfort and knowledge zone, but the answer was so interesting I would like to detail some of it here.  Quoran Jim Mowreader posted the answer, about a NASCAR mechanic called 'Smokey Yunick".  Conrad isn't quite sure what the acronym 'NASCAR' breaks down to, just that it involves car going around a racetrack REALLY REALLY FAST, and it seems to be popular in the South of South Canada.  Art!

National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing

'Stock' meaning that you need to use a commercially available vehicle, not a custom-built job, and there are extensive regulations about how you can modify your vehicle, as well as what you can't do.  Art!

Smokey was  nothing if not imaginative.  He was trying for a speed record at Bonneville Flats with a Camaro in 1968.  Art!

He took all the bodywork panels off, and then soaked them in acid.  The acid ate away at the metal, and he probably had to juggle and jiggle the panels to ensure even erosion, and by the time he'd finished the panel's were half as thick as normal.  Which means half as heavy as normal.  Which means for the same engine power the car would go faster.

     I like this chap!

Finally -

It being one of my days off today, and the car being available, Conrad did the weekly shop this morning.  Morrisons infested with people even older than I am, who seemed to need their trolleys as an impromptu Zimmer frame.  At least being this early in the day meant lots of tills open.

And with that we are DONE!

The Future Is Now

Let Me Put Forward Conrad's Theory Of Time-Travel
I'm working this up as possibly the basis of a story, so let's pontificate, prevaricate and create, although not necessarily in that order.
Okay, H. G.Wells kicked all this off with his Time Machine Macguffin, which was able to move forward and backward in time with equal facility.
     WRONG!
Well, I can say this because nobody has yet invented a time-machine, so my input is as valid as anyone elses, and if you don't agree THE EXIT DOOR IS THAT WAY!  Art!

Okay, Conrad asks that you imagine The Present as an infinitesmally small moment in time.  Thus you have The Past and The Future.  Are we clear?
Now, someone once said that the past is another country and you cannot go there, which doesn't apply seem to be  if you have a time machine or time portal or a TARDIS.  You see, the past is fixed in place.  It's already happened, so you can't change it even if you try; the dead weight of all previous existence will prevent that from happening so the future remains the same.  Art!

What happens if your Clumsy Oaf of a Time-Traveller DOES in fact change the past, I hear you ask?  You know, as in Ray Bradbury's "A Sound Of Thunder" where a traveller to the Paleozoic steps on a butterfly and allows a modern-day Herr Schickelgruber to attain power.  Art!

Well, if you do change the past, you generate another future completely different from the one you are in, causing a process of infinite bifurcation and alternate universes.  Don't contemplate this too closely, there are scads of padded rooms full of physicists who tried too hard.

CAUTION: padded room imminent

Now let's look at the future.  Pretty obviously it hasn't happened yet, or it wouldn't be the future, would it?
Take a look at the infinite bifurcation diagram above.  Also imagine that the time-frame it takes place within is a pico-second from now.  If one moves forward one micro-second there are an almost infinite number of potential futures, so the chances of anything you send into the future remaining in your own, specific time-line are infinitesmal.
That's my current theory on time and time-travel.  I'll probably have another one by next week.
ANYWAY of course none of this is anything to do with what I really meant to talk about, which is how we are living in the future, which seems to have arrived a bit early.  Art!
This is a remote-controlled (I think - hang on whilst I check) - yup- drone designed for operating either close behind the front lines or, if fitted out with a weapons system, in the front lines.  Art!
Guarding Estonia

The Ukrainians are getting 14 of these things, which frankly resemble Terminator prototypes a little too closely for comfort - Art!

Be reassured, technophobes, the Ukrainian versions are unarmed; half of them are for evacuating battlefield casualties, which means less exposure for Ukrainian medical staff on the front lines, and given the conditions around the Donbas this can only be a good thing.  Art!
1917 but similar

The other half are designated 'Route-Clearance' models, which means they clear booby-traps, mines, obstructions, fill in holes in the road, and look slightly less intimidating than the Terminator version.  Art!

Hmmmmm interesting - I wonder if these things could be programmed to work in the back yard?
Motley!  I don't need a TheMIS when I have you - here's a pickaxe, a shovel and a bag of sand.  Get busy.

Houston, We Have A Visitor
Yes, since Darling Daughter is looking for gainful employment she's able to visit us without having to missing work.  And here she is.  Art!

Edna, of course, was delighted to have another human who can fawn over her.  DD also brought along a free gift from her work.  Art!

Welllllllll we now know why they were free.  No English translation.  Don't worry, Conrad the pedantic hair-splitter will work through the instructions in translation.  I think it's a variety of Angel Delight but we shall see.

"It's A Knockout"
Conrad was describing in thumbnails to DD what worthwhile K-Drama to watch, and had "Squid Game" down as "It's A Knockout + Death", which is pretty accurate in my opinion, which is the one that counts.
Then, of course - obviously! - Your Humble Scribe realised that he'd have to explain what IAKO was, for I seriously doubt it's been around for decades.  Art!

There were teams from different towns who competed against each other in spectacularly daft games, frequently wearing giant foam-rubber suits as above.  The winning team went through into the next round. Art!

     And absolutely nobody died.

"The Sea Of Sand"

The Doctor has been whisked to temporary safety via trans-mat, leaving his fugitive accomplice Sorbusa behind, involuntarily.

Elegant, he felt.  Keeping the sledge horizontal with part of it projecting beyong the platform took a huge effort, which was less elegant.  Nor could he tell Thedoctor what his plan was.  Sharing a cell with the small alien meant Sorbusa knew what the small alien would approve of, and a glorious last stand would not be approved of.

What would be approved?  That might was not right.  It was not, and never would be, and never had been, and he had to make up for the fact that he had practiced the creed utterly ruthlessly.  He had Thedoctor to thank for that, a view into the world beyond the narrow boundaries his upbringing imposed, where fear and suffering had been commonplace.

If might was not right, then his race had no right to export their miserable ecological blight to other worlds, no right to plunder and murder endlessly, no right to degrade and despoil.  This planet Earth ought not to be reduced to a million miles of desert slab.

So, when he materialised on the platform, Sorbusa deliberately attracted as much attention as possible, shrieking loudly, threatening nearby Warriors with the stunner and shard-thrower, warning Thedoctor to flee.  He leaped from the platform, still shouting, and went for the nearest bio-vores, who simply stood, frozen with disbelief.  Five of them died before the remainder scattered.

Who said aliens can't be noble and self-sacrificing?

Ooooh!
Here's an interesting news item that's just come up on the BBC's News website.  You may recall Citizen Trump, when he was Prez, claimed that he couldn't hand over his tax returns because the pistachio harvest in the Sanjack Of Novi Pazar wasn't in yet?  Or some such shizzle.  Art!

I declare this man the winner in the Tribble-Topped-Beer-Keg-In-A-Suit Category.  I know, I know, I've used that joke before.  It gets funnier EVERY SINGLE TIME (a nod to "Beetlegeuse").
ANYWAY he has been wriggling like a worm on the hook since 2016, refusing to hand over his tax returns.  He's been taken to court, been judged against, appealed, failed the appellate court, gone to the Supreme Court and been rejected - one of his go-to legal tactics is to delay, delay and delay.  Well, it hasn't worked this time, and you can bet your bottom dollar that these details are -
     - going to leak.

Currently watching "Everything Everywhere All At Once" which is entertainingly bonkers and features the Multiverse, which is where we came in.
