Ha!
I've occasionally seen the word used in writing but didn't know what it meant and had no intention of going so far as to look it up. Well I just did in my trusty Collins Concise and it is:"dark, dull, lacking brightness" also "Oxford University formal dress". So now we both know more than we did five minutes ago. Splendid! (Actually it's only relatively subfusc compared to earlier this afternoon).
Okay, so by tradition we need a pulp magazine cover that's not too racy in order to tempt in the passing traffic. Art!
As ever, there is an attractive young lady in peril; this is about the most basic cover trope imaginable, although this one is quite modestly dressed compared to other, trashier, damsels. One wonders about the ghostly green skeleton: since a skeleton consists of disarticulated bones, how can they stay together? How can they move about in the absence of muscles and tendons? How can it know where it's scarlet victim is WHEN IT HAS NO EYES!
Of course, I might be overthinking this ...
