Sunday's Sojourn

Okay, Sojourn Number One

This is the one with links, in case you were wondering.  I can mix stuff around if I feel like it; once again, whose blog is it?

Okay - yes again - time for Art to provide us with the traditional click-baity picture.  Get a shift on, Art, this Tazer's a-humming!

Call me cynical, but I don't think that's a draught of smelling-salts.  And only a thorough cad and bounder wanders around in a red cowled robe.  Methinks matey is up to no good.  Conrad would also counsel moderation to the young lady, because drinking so much that you pass out renders one terribly vulnerable - note the chains binding her to the floor.  And it looks a nasty cold damp floor, too.

     ANYWAY on with the links.

The Biter Bit

Here's An Analogy

NO IT ISN'T RUDE!  WASH OUT YOUR FILTHY MINDS! <pauses to compose self>.  As I am taking pains to avoid mention of Puffy Petrol Pimp and his gimp limp, you can have this Intro instead.

Recall, if you will, the First Unpleasantness.  It finished over a century ago yet the echoes are still with us.  Originally it had been expected to be over by Christmas - and one wonders how many wars have begun with that strident claim on people's lips - and the Teutons confidently expected to be in Paris dictating terms by Bonfire Night.  Art!

British and Teuton tourists squabble in France

Sadly not so.  The conflict dragged on into 1915 and April witnessed the Teutons using gas on a large scale at Second Ypres, said gas being chlorine.  Their intent was to break the Allied lines, march on Paris and dictate terms by Easter.  Again, sadly not so.  The Allied lines contracted severely but they didn't break, and Fritz Haber had, literally, let the genie out of the bottle.  Prize-winning Teuton chemist, for your information.  The average Teuton stubble-hopper might have felt ambivalent about Fritzy at the time; this would change, O by Jove would it!

You see, the prevailing winds on the Western Front blew principally from west to east, on the order of 10:1 versus east to west.  And since gas warfare was conducted using whacking big cylinders of gas, that meant your average Teuton stubble-hopper might very well have a bad hair day to surpass all bad hair days in his near future.  Art!

Enter the Battle of Loos.  This was a politically-driven attack by the armies of Perfidious Albion, where gas was going to be used to compensate for a lack of artillery and shells.

Now, all that most people know about the BoL is that the British gas blew back into the advancing British infantry and caused heavy casualties.  True as far as it goes - in the north of the attack.  However, in the south the gas got into Teuton lines as it was released with the wind behind it - and in darkness, too.  Royal Engineers of the Special Company, detailed to observe gas effects, noted that the Teuton rifle, machine gun and artillery fire immediately went wild and then stopped when the chlorine rolled into their trenches.  The Brits were in possession of the Teuton front line by 07:30.  Art!

Loos.  Definitely a 'fixer-upper'.  "Tower Bridge" (actually pithead gear) in background

In the centre it was noted that Teuton trenches were empty of either live or dead bodies - they had all bolted rather than face the gas.  Elsewhere gas got into sub-surface bunkers (being heavier-than-air will do that) and forced the occupants out into the open - when they made the acquaintance of British shrapnel shells.

All told, Teuton anti-gas gear, techniques and practices were poor or inadequate.

"GAS WARFARE?  GAS WARFARE?  THEY'LL NEVER TRY THAT!" seems to have been the attitude at Teuton headquarters.  "After all, here we are in September 1915 and we began it in April, so nothing can possibly go wrong!"  Hence Teuton gas-masks were rubbish quality and could only be worn for 4 hours before failing.

By the end of 1915 the average Teuton stubble-hopper was probably beginning to think evil thoughts about Fritz Haber.  I mean, how dare these Allies retaliate with gas when it was us what brung it!  Fighting back?  How dare they!  Art?

We may come back to this topic, I've got 26 pages of notes I made from a work about the British army on the Western Front and gas warfare*.

Now For Something A Lot More Wholesome

You may recall Conrad putting forth a few pictures from the BBC's pages about unusual bridges of the world, of which there were only six.  Well, whooping Kreplach! do, I found another themed photography page, this on being "On The Water".  Bring up the first picture!

Courtesy Prantik Biswas

Very atmospheric, nicht wahr?  It's so much easier to manage that in monochrome.  All I can tell you is that this is a surfer, surfing.

"Ticket Of Leave"

A phrase as used by Josephine Tey in "The Man In The Queue" and because Conrad was deliberately making notes about obscure words or phrases he wrote it down.  The novel was written ninety-three years ago so there's a certain amount of slang that needs checking.  What, AND WASH OUT YOUR FILTHY MINDS IN ADVANCE! is a 'Dangler'?  From context one presumes a variety of transport.

ANYWAY - ToL.  This was a ticket issued to a prisoner released from jail, stating that they had paid their debt to society and were a reformed chap and a thoroughly decent cove.  Art!

     So now we know.

"The Sea Of Sand"

More of my eclectic page-turner - hmmmmm more of a page-scroller I suppose as it's electronic not paper - about the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith stuck, TARDISless, in the hostile wastes of North Africa, during wartime.  Please note the Afrika Korps only put a token appearance in at the very end.

‘Well, better get rolling,’ said Roger to himself, liberating a bottle of mineral water from the stores tent.

The seven members trudged doggedly into the dunes, leaving the rolling, undulating gravel plain behind them.  Long practice meant the only sound came from the two squeaking wheelbarrows; conversation would be saved for the actual dig itself.

Fulgoni felt the familiar sinking feeling in his stomach when the massive black pillars appeared over the dunes ahead, a nameless dread he couldn’t explain or rationalise away.  He didn’t believe the missing Egyptians and Libyans had run off; no, their disappearance was directly linked to this dark and sinister place.  The how he couldn’t imagine, but a man didn’t simply run away in the night in this trackless waste, without food or water or shelter.  Unconsciously he crossed himself, only realising what he’d done when the brooding Valette blinked in surprise.  Fulgoni glanced around, to discover that all the other member’s attention lay on the buildings ahead.  The only good thing to say about this place in the armpit of the desert was the total absence of flies, which were usually an annoying and persistent torment for any dig.

The group topped a final dune before the excavation, pausing to look over the site.  Once again Fulgoni felt that anticipation of awe and dread, taking in the vista as if for the first time.

You'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what Makan-al Jinni looks like, matey.

Finally -

Only a short item needed for this bit to hit the Adjusted Compositional Ton.  You remember?  If Your Humble Scribe sticks one of his long-form fictions in then we need to hit 1,200 words.

Ooooh!  Ooooh!  I got one!  Another insulting nickname for Bloaty Gas Tout.  "The Gremlin In The Kremlin".  O my, what killer satire, that'll have him weeping into his shchi**.  "The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant" have nothing on Dimya's saline oozings.  There's also "Flabby Crabby" because he is, and what is the astrological sign for the crab?   Yeah well tasteless but he O so thoroughly deserves it.

And now it's time to go make stew!

*  It's either this or the 5,000 word monograph about "Forbidden Planet" and it's effect upon subsequent sci-fi films.  Your choice.

**  Ruffian cabbage soup.

O Be Quiet Edna!

It Doesn't Matter How Many Times You Whimper

My meatloaf and mustard panini half is not going to float through the air and land at your paws, madam.  Get that into your head.  It might work with Wonder Wifey, IT WILL NOT WORK WITH ME.  Conrad: a will of iron and absolutely no mercy when it comes to his food.

Now, let us prod Art into a semblance of consciousness with this red-hot pitchfork and get a nice click-baity picture.

Pretty sure that's not a waffle-iron

Hmmmm never heard of this magazine before.  It does tick all the Trope Boxes, though: steely-eyed muscle-man wielding a gun; green-skinned alien of dubious morals; attractive young lady not wearing a lot (at least she hasn't been blessed with the hideously uncomfortable Brass Bra).

Is Conrad Angry?

What Do You Think?

Is water wet?  Is there a supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy?  Can Sprong be used for domestic and light industrial applications?  Are my thunderbolts still out for Russell Brand and Alan Carr?

The answer that you're stumbling towards is YES.

Okay, now all we need for this Intro is a click-baity picture, so if Art will put down his bowl of coke and coal -

Hmmmmm I get the strong impression that 'Mallory Storm' is a pseudonym, probably disguising one of this publication's staff writers.  Also, Conrad knows you're going to ask questions about that tagline along the bottom.  Well, a good five minutes on Google revealed only that yes, Mallory Storm was a pseudonym, for one Paul Fairman.  As for the plot of "Miracle At The County" - that remains to be seen, I cannot elicit any information.  However, one can reasonably speculate that those sinister hook-handed shadowy figures are the 'Walking dead' although 'Shambling dead' seems a closer description.  As to why an attractive young lady is hiding in a mine whilst only wearing a leotard and heels - nope, stumped on that one, too.

ANYWAY allow me to elucidate on my anger.  Yes yes yes, Codeword solutions again, there are eternal constants in this Universe and Conrad's unfettered fury at Codeword solutions is one of those.  Get used to it.

"GYMKHANA": Go on, how many of you have ever heard of this word before?  It's the sort of word that crops up in novels for young adults about girls at boarding school getting up to japes and jollity.  That stopped being written in the Sixties.  Let me consult my Collins Concise: "An event in which horses and riders display skill and aptitude in various races and contests."  And do you know what?  It comes from the HINDI NOT LATIN <hack spit> OR GREEK <hack hack spit spit> which is a turn up for the books.  'Gend-khana' meaning 'ball-house'.

     BUT STILL!

Horses on courses

"CONDIGN":  Conrad, thanks to having a memory like a skip (cubic capacity 1,884 miles³) recalls a quote from the BBC's premier dramamentary 'Doctor Who', where Vira, Chief Med-Tec (a sawbones to you) of the Ark, mentions that only Noah has the ability 'to take condign action'.  So I knew this word, it's just not fair on the rest of you benighted heathens.  It means 'Fittingly deserved, especially of a punishment'.  Art!

Vira and Noah (pre-metamorphosis)

"OSCULUM":  WHAT, ARE WE ALL MARINE BIOLOGISTS NOW?!  <seethes noisily>.  "An aperture in a sponge from which water is expelled".  How obtuse and obscure can you get!  Art!

I have no words

Except to say that's this Intro over and done with.

And Now  Back To Badly Drawn Boy

I didn't realise how many lyrics there were to this song, so we've come back to finish it off <sniggers at double-entendre>.

We made something out of nothing
Well done! See, you can do it if you put an effort in.
Whatever it is.
A sense of loathing and belonging
Yes. This comes of too much gin. Trust me on this.
Some of us were gonna be rich
With the Iron Lady

Lennon's gone already
He certainly has!

Let's post the boys to war
Oh mother, what're you worrying for
It's somewhere he's not been before
An editor waited all his life to use that title

Then you see the Union Jack
And it means nothing
HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT THE FLAG!
AND STAND UP FOR THE QUEEN!
But somehow you know
That you will find your own way

It's a small reminder every day
That I was born in the U.K.

This Sceptred Isle

Phew, glad we've got that out of the way.  Next time I'm going to do Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days".

Here an aside.  Our Ruffian readership has swelled to 76.  Greetings, valiant Ruffians, risking exile to Novaya Zemlya in order to catch up on our latest scrivel!

BOOJUM! Reviews Films

In our own inimitable way.  That is, we generalise hugely based on the title alone, and don't care if it's accurate or not.  If you want a proper film review, go read anything by Mark Kermode (big Comsat Angels fan you know).

"The Northman":  That doesn't really narrow the plot down, does it?  I imagine 50% of the world's population live in the Northern Hemisphere, and 50% of those will be male.  I know The Critical Drinker recommended it, and he hates everything, so - he's Scottish you know - it's probably a grim moralistic tale of life and death in the Gorbals of Glesgae.  Lots of drinking and fighting, and it will need subtitles for the South Canadian release (and probably the English one, too).  Art!

Conrad hits nail on head

"The Staircase": a.k.a. "Conrad Falls Out Of His Chair With Boredom".  Kreplach!  It's not even a fancy staircase, like a spiral or marble one.  Doubtless the critics will love love love it and rave about the acting and dialogue and plot, and the audiences will stay away in droves, because BORING.

Imagine ninety minutes of this

"Top Gun: Maverick":  You see?  This is where the audience above went.  Conrad still hasn't seen "Top Gun" and doesn't feel any the poorer for it, but I can guess what TGM will have: Tom Cruise - whom you may not be a fan of, but you can't deny this guy brings a 110% work ethic to the job - and big noisy jet fighters going REALLY REALLY FAST.  And a dogfight at the end, except it has to be with a fake opponent because if it was the R<coughcough>s it would be over in thirty seconds scoreline South Canada 5 R<hackhackhack>s 0.

Aaaayyyyy!  Tim 'Tiny' Robbins!

"The Sea Of Sand"

Yes, back to our Doctor Who long-form fan fiction.  Conrad had a few rules when writing these.  1)  Absolutely NO ROMANCE between The Doctor and any female companion, none whatsoever, not in any way, shape or form.  A whole lot of the 'Mary Sue' fan-fictions out there have - well, 'canoodling' going on.  2)  No 'Mary Sue' element whatsoever.  This is where a thinly-disguised version of the author turns up to save the day, rescue the damsel/The Doctor, and all-round be an annoyance.  3)  There may be comic moments but this is SERIOUS DRAMA.  No, we do not do a Harry Potter crossover, or have The Beatles guest-star, or break the fourth wall.  Having said that ...

Ben Cherif paused in passing behind Roger.

‘It is this place.  I have seen the lights at night, and heard wind when there is none.  The demons of this place took them,’ and he hawked and spat on the sand, moving on.  Roger looked after him uncertainly.

Roger and Fulgoni took the dirty plates and cleaned them with sand.

‘The Professore is not happy, eh?’ remarked Fulgoni, twitching one shoulder in the direction of the table.  Roger nodded whilst shaking sand off the plates.

‘His one intention is to finish this dig and get it published in the journals.  Nothing else matters to him.  Not me, or you, and certainly not the Libyans and Egyptians.’

          Fulgoni made a wry face.

‘He has to care now.  With seven labourers gone, we are his labourers.’

They finished abrading dirt off the dishes and replaced them in the box.  Di Fellica came over to point out Roger.

‘Doctor Bartolomei asks you to stay and catalogue the  site sketches.’

The young graduate shrugged.  His turn to avoid heavy work today, which meant he’d be out on the dig tomorrow.  A reasonable assumption, yet completely wrong.

Ben Cherif and Bourgebus went to the tool tent and emerged, pushing two very battered wheelbarrows, each laden with shovels, picks, balls of string, wooden planks and pegs.  The other members collected cameras, sketch pads, pencils, rulers and other equipment too fragile or valuable to be left in the tool tent.  The motley collection began the trudge across the sand-strewn gravel, heading to where the dunes began.  The dig was another half a kilometre further into the dune sea, a tiring slog in the loose sand.

Apologies for using Metric <hack spit> but with the Italians and French outnumbering the British it was a fait accomplit.

Finally -

It's not April 1st, is it?  I had to wonder after reading the following on the BBC's News website.  Art!

     You what?

Don't worry, art lovers.  The picture is protected from physical harm by plate glass.  Waste of a nice cake, mind.

Good afternoon

Occasionally.  First of all, let's introduce a bit of click-baity pictography, all the better to tempt the visitors in.

Here an aside; I'm having a brunch of cheese-and-meatloaf toastie, and even with the meatloaf sliced thin it's filling stuff.  Thankfully I have a pot of loose-leaf Darjeeling to wash it down with.  I know you'd be concerned otherwise.

     ANYWAY Art?

Hmmmm okay we'll let it stand

Brillig BOOJUM! Bounces Back

As Evinced By Conrad, The Utter Hack

It has been a week since I started posting links as usually done on a Sunday evening, rather than fresh new content, being in rather a snit that the readers had deserted us.  This had two results: it bumped up traffic significantly as people explored The Steve And Oscar Show going back eight years, and it saved Your Humble Scribe at least an hour of slaving over a clacking keyboard.  Great!  I get to tackle that jigsaw, read old long-form fictions written years ago, and discover new Netflix shows.  Plus crack on with "Reclaiming History", now up to Page 1,200, so just over 300 to go.

But first!  We need a click-baity picture.  Art!

"Tomorrow"

This is a Sork supernatural drama comedy, and the three on the left are a Risk Management Team, whose duty is to prevent humans from committing suicide; they are part of a larger organisation run on conventional business lines whose business is dealing with souls.  That chap on the right is head of 'Escorts', who essentially ensure people meet their justified end.  Some of it is very powerful drama indeed, the initial two episodes dealing with the consequences of bullying.

That's Choi-Jun Woong, the human element of the RM Grim Reapers.  Not to put too fine a point upon it, he's an idiot.  But - he has a good heart and there's room for improvement.  He is also the comic relief, because you can't have all wall-to-wall misery and depression.

Okay, we have a lot to get through so I shall call this Intro to a succinct close right here.

Looking To The Past

As you should surely know by now, Conrad is an inquisitive rascal whose long nose gets poked into all the corners all the time.  Thus we look back at one of the click-baity pulp covers I used to tempt the viewers in.  Art!

Hmmmmm so the sinister shadow is begin cast by a titanically-taloned creature in front of her, so naturally she's looking behind her rather than the creature itself?  How does this make sense?  If you retort that obviously this is one of the 'Usurpers' then how can an invisible creature cast a shadow?  Hmmm.  Yeah, got you there.  Then look at that tagline "THE EARTH OVERRUN BY AN INVISIBLE HORDE!" which begs a little intellectual parsing.  For starters, HOW DO YOU KNOW! if the horde is invisible?  For all you know there's only a few hundred concentrated in Lesser Sneddlepool or The Sanjak Of Novi Pazar (doubtless after the pistachio harvest) and the rest of the world is Usurper-free.

Also, "The Man Who Could Not Die" seems to be a logical fallacy, because have they tried every possible combination of every possible thing in order to test this assertion?  No!  For all They know a batch of fudge irradiated by Cobalt isotopes and garnished with Sprong could finish him off in seconds.  Ha!  Didn't think of that, did They?  Art!

Very possibly Sprong*

Each Step Is The Inevitable Consequence Of The Preceding One

As said by Albert Einstein.  You know, clever fellah, Mad Scientist hairdo.  Let me add in the initial spark for this mental conflagration.  Art!

There you go.  As we all know, Conrad's mind resembles a skip two miles wide, six miles long and one hundred and fifty seven miles high**.  This means that nothing ever gets thrown out, even if it might take a little while to locate an item.  So, as soon as I read the above I was instantly reminded of - Art?

As played a few times on Sir John Peel's radio program before he was a 'Sir'.  They were exactly what it says on the sleeve - a group who played modern rock tunes on an array of kazoos, a fact which tickled Peely enough to play their sonic nonsense a few times.

Whole Lotta Love - YouTube

That's a link to their - ah - 'performance' of "Whole Lotta Love" and if you revere Led Zeppelin even a little, you'll steer well clear.

     Hence this item's title.

Say Hello To Vanya And Lizza!

Conrad has been steering clear of any commentary about Putin On The Fritz's dirty dealings, which seems to have encouraged our Ruffian visitors to delicately dabble dangerously with BOOJUM! for even thinking of reading our raving scrivel is probably a gulag sentence of, oooh, eighty years solitary confinement in a turf hut on the tundra, with only defrosted mammoth for provisions***.  Art!

Apologies for the synchrony artefacts, I can't get a screenshot with the number of readers present.  Note we seem to have readers also in Korea and Lithuania.  I wonder what they make of us?

You Can't Escape The Shadow Of Conflict

Although this reference is to the Second Unpleasantness in North Africa, and yes we're referring back to "The War Illustrated".

Here an aside.  If you've been following my commentary on this publication then you were either relieved or vaguely disappointed that I was nearing the end of Volume Six.  Er - except I bought a set of all ten volumes, in much better nick that the single volume bought in a charity shop.  So - long story short, we are not going to run out of TWI source material any time soon.

     ANYWAY - Art!

These are South Canadian troops learning the ropes in a realistic, which is to say dangerous, environment.  The troops crossing that rope bridge now have a feeling of what it's like to cross a river under fire.  The mock 'grave' in the second photo has an inscription upon the cross "This man took up a position on a skyline".  For the military-light amongst you, this means he was silhouetted against the sky behind him, making him an excellent target.  That last picture shows a simulated assault against an enemy strongpoint; hopefully not a live-fire exercise because flamethrowers are frightening weapons that absolutely do not forgive mistakes.

"The Sea Of Sand"

Excuse me whilst I catch up with where we left off on this Doctor Who fan-fiction.  Aha!  A petty squabble amongst the Templeman-Bartolomei expedition members.

The Frenchman darted a venemous look at the speaker.  He might have made a barbed comment in his native tongue had not Bartolomei, the expedition’s leader, emerged from his small tent.  As usual, the Italian’s moustache was neatly trimmed, his hair brushed and oiled and his chin freshly dashed with aftershave.  His linen suit, salty, creased and dirty, nevertheless gave him an air of importance.  The jacket would come off during work at the dig, the only concession Bartolomei made to heat and sunlight.

‘Gentlemen, I heard raised voices,’ he chided gently.  ‘There is no need to export the unpleasantness of Europe here, into Libya.  Let us begin the day in a civilised manner, if we can.’

Taking a seat at the head of the table, he sliced up stale bread and began to sip the strong, milky coffee that Fulgoni had brewed.  Professor Templeman glowered in annoyance at being told off, and attacked his bread and ham with a vengeance.  Borguebus left the radio in disgust and joined the seated party, choosing only coffee.  Di Fellica, the last man to wake, came late to breakfast and got the dregs of the coffee.

Finally, when he deemed everyone to have finished, Bartolomei looked mildly at Professor Templeman and moved his head slightly forward, a gesture of invitation.

‘The last Libyan ran off last night,’ said Templeman.  ‘Now all we have to help us is Ben Cherif.’

          Bartolomei looked puzzled.

‘Another disappearance?  After we doubled his wages?  Really, this is most odd.’  He muttered quietly to himself in his native tongue for a few seconds.  Templeman stoked up his meerschaum whilst others smoked cigarettes.

Finally -

Much to my dismay I haven't come up with any new nicknames for Puffy Petrol Pimp.  Very remiss.  I shall have to go away and cogitate.

*  It's a long story.  Go read a few of my early blogs.

The Moon In June

NO!

It's a song by Soft Machine, not a line of doggerel by some forgettable crooner from the Thirties.  Art!

Because we all need a break from pulp magazine covers from the Thirties, nicht wahr?

Hmmmm.  Edna has come to lie on the floor in my Sekrit Layr.  There are two possible explanations for this.  One: everyone else has abandoned The Mansion and so she is cast upon her and mine own devices; or Two:  Yes she can smell those chicken drumsticks that I left in their sandwich bag after deciding not to eat them at lunch yesterday.  They'll still be fine after a whole day lying on the sideboard, won't they?  O well guess I'll find out at lunch.
