Call me cynical, but I don't think that's a draught of smelling-salts. And only a thorough cad and bounder wanders around in a red cowled robe. Methinks matey is up to no good. Conrad would also counsel moderation to the young lady, because drinking so much that you pass out renders one terribly vulnerable - note the chains binding her to the floor. And it looks a nasty cold damp floor, too.
