Good Old-Fashioned British Compromise, Hmmmm?

Although quite how Alfred Bester would have conjured up his novel "The Stars My Destination" with a baseline premise like this is questionable; it would probably have turned into an introspective character study dealing with anomie, angst and alienation, set in the dystopian hinterlands of Upper Dymchurch. Or something. Art!
