Looking Back In Frothing Nitric Ire

As Usual

For Lo! we are come to the second of Sunday's posts, and as I've been complaining at high volume for some time now, I thought being angry would be the way forward.  It's one of the ways the Stainless Steel Rat managed to get by when He was trying to take over the galaxy -

But I digress.  I often do, so get used to it.  ANYWAY, I wanted to entice folks with a short mention about more matte work in "When Worlds Collide".  And a quick explanation about matte work.  This was where an artist, and they had to be a really skilled one, would paint a scene on glass, save for a section that was left blank.  This allowed for scenes that would have been ridiculously expensive to do for real, and if the artist, editor, director and lighting people did a good job, you'd never know, because the filmed insert would blend seamlessly into that blank area.  Art!

Here the matte line is just under that line of rock and vegetation, with the real bulldozer and workers being blended into the shot.  You didn't think they really created a mile-long raised concrete launch rail in the flesh, did you?

Sadly, matte work has been largely supplanted by CGI.  Go and Google the term and see how impressive they could be.

Oooops.  This second post is supposed to be short on text and long on links, and here we are at 250 words already.  Sorry*!
