And Mildly Apoplectic

I was thrown by a a 5-letter word in a Codeword in "The Puzzler", which went 

'_ _ _ S S' and I was thinking along the lines of 'O there has to be a vowel before the 'SS' yet that didn't work out, because Letter 11 was overwhelmingly at the end of other words, which meant it couldn't be 'O' or 'U'and 'I' had already been given, so - Art!

     Yup, it was 'ABYSS'.  Sneaky bumbletucks.
