Greek Bail Out

Yes Indeedy, Archimede
Aaaand that's today's coincidence also taken care of.
What is an Archimedes Screw?  Why, a mechanical device used to raise water from a lower level to a higher level, reputedly designed by that ancient Greek polymath Archimedes, so in essence it bails out the water.
     Hence the post title.
     Here's an illustration of one:
Crank the handle, raise the water
They were widely used in the Netherlands, in order to drain the seas off low-lying land, which is where tonight's coincidence comes in:
A decorative Archimedes screw at work in -
    - s'Hertegenbosh.  As mentioned last week in "Gravity's Rainbow", and where your humble scribed worked in a factory in 1983.
What?  What?  Did you think "Greek Bail Out" meant something different?

Ice Cream
Since we have strawberries, not raspberries, your humble scribe made Strawberry and Yoghurt ice cream last night, but forgot to take a picture.  I know you don't believe a word I say unless it's backed up by photographs, a notarised statement and the Chief Constable nodding in agreement, so here it is:
The evidence
It scoops really well, unlike some of the icy concrete mixtures I've made in the past.  I'm going to post another photo, because -

It was delicious!  Definitely strawberry ice cream.  I did mention it to Wonder Wifey, so fingers crossed there's any left to come home to tomorrow.

Our Shower
At last it can be told!
Well, not the shower, actually, rather the rest of the bathroom, which has been re-done by Wonder Wifey.  Firstly:
Green underfloor base
     - followed by most of the lino -

     - and finished off with the fitments and trimmings -

Well done Conrad Wonder Wifey!

"Badinage"
Have you ever wondered where this word comes from?
Probably not, you're more likely interested in that bottle of Budweiser chilling in the fridge, and who can blame you.  Just take it easy on the chocolate-coated frozen bananas*.
It means "Witty banter or chit-chat", the kind of thing that Conrad puts a swift end to at work.  It derives from Old French, "Badin" meaning "Fool", which transitioned to "Badiner", "To Joke" and then "Badinage".
BOOJUM!  Educating you like it or not.

Gravity's Rainbow" By Thomas Pynchon
Tom's getting some mileage tonight.  If only he were paying for this priceless publicity!  Anyway, as ever, he throws words into the novel that Conrad, the predictable pedant, has to check out.  So we had "Fantod", where I guessed wrong - nothing to do with the supernatural, it means "A state of, or attack of, uneasiness in a person" - much the way I feel at the never-ending coincidences that come crowding round so often.
He also mentions "Godel's Theorem", and, as I cannot make heads or tails of it, here is the link to Wiki.  Good luck with it.

Tom encapsulates** this theorem in the wonderfully simple allegory of a shopping list.       Thanks, Tom.
No pictures here, there were enough at the top.

Bad Beards

There seems to be a fad for beards so bad.
What's the appeal of a facial Brillo-pad?
Look at me, I'm apparently Hipster Dad
Yet even I scorn the look of the sin-chin lad.

Every word true.  There are some bizarre beards out there, some of which look like a family-sized doormat nailed to a face.
Just thought I'd let you know my point of view on this.

Big.  But not clever.
North Korean Executions
I know, I know - this violates all three criteria for Exclusion From BOOJUM! Politics, Current Affairs and Religion, i.e. worship of that Unappealing Fat Lad with the sulky face.
May I gently remind you whose blog it is?
Anyway, the subject is so bizarre it might well be filed under You What?
Since Ping Pong Jim came to power he's apparently killed off 70 of the Nork generals that were there before him.  What's rather grotesque is how some have been killed.  One was executed by being shelled with mortar bombs; another was roasted to death with a flamethrower, and lately another has been confirmed as being executed by anti-aircraft gun.
This sounds like a bit like Shakespeare: "As flys to wanton boys" - meaning Ping Pong, being an evil little git, likes to see what effect different weapons have.

I told you.  Fat and sulky.

From The Grotesque To The Grotty
Yes, right back to The Metro.  Once again it provides a touchstone of tat, as proven by the cover:

Margot who?  And then there's "60 Seconds" with another unknown.  John who?
In a bitter irony, not a word about Doctor Who, with the new trailer and all.

* An "Inherent Vice" in joke.
** Misha and Grisha, I hope that scribbling is you taking notes.
