Explosives!
Perhaps I should clarify that a little: today I learned more about explosives, namely what damage they can do and what constitutes them, including one I distinctly remember from the short stories of Biggles and his early endeavours in the First Unpleasantness: ammonal. Conrad has long been convinced it's pronounced "amm-on-al", short "O", but the rapscallions demonstrating it used the "amm-own-al" pronunciation. Art!
One presumes that's Biggles in the cockpit of his "Oil-swilling Hump" as non-fans of the Camel called it, thanks to the oil thrown out by the rotary engine. Yes, he is firing through the propellor arc, no, he's not trying to shoot it off. This variety of aircraft was fitted with an interruptor gear that stopped the gun from firing when the prop blade revolved in front of the gun muzzle.
ANYWAY we will most certainly be getting back to this later on, tomorrow, probably. In the meantime, let us lay out the harvest of links, methinks.
