     You should already be familiar with Robert Heinlein as an author.  Keith Laumer may be less familiar to you.  His character Retief is a kind of diplomat with hefty military-backed assets.  Another of his works involve a parallel reality where German, Sweden and Britain form The Imperium.  There's more to him than that and we might come back to him at a future date.

     I think the cover displays an Evil Alien blasting away with a firearm, as seen reflected in this astronaut's sunglasses, and his expression seems to imply that being shot is a bit Kreplach!
