ANYWAY I also caught myself wondering about the county names of Wessex, and Essex, and Sussex, and - you know me and etymology - how did they come about? Surely our ancestors were not fearful perverts like the readers of this blog?
Well no. I had recourse to teh Interwebz, which states that these county names are 'elisions' of longer original names, thus: "Wessex" comes from "West Saxons", "Essex" comes from "East Saxons" and "Sussex" comes from "South Saxons". So now we know. Art!
