We Are Living In The Future

Conrad Occasionally Makes This Assertion

Usually because technology that is obviously from the future has arrived in the present, so much so that one suspects a certain chap with a big blue box has been mucking about with the timestreams*.  And it seems rather odd that th

ANYWAY here I am wittering about the future, because that is where we will spend the rest of our lives (a profound statement that I stole from someone else) unless of course - obviously! - the Robot Rebellion takes place.  Or the Zombie Apocalypse, not being precious about which End Of The World takes place.  Art!

'What on earth is that?' pondered Your Humble Scribe.  'It looks most impressive.  An induced protoplasmic pulse-pummeler?

Well, no.  It's actually an Ukrainian Anti-Drone Gun, which is nothing to do with either bagpipes or the office bore.  No, the drones in question are Ruffian ones flying over the battlefield, which the Ukes would rather be decorating the ground after coming to a dead stop mid-air.  The weapons have come from Lithuania, where they are known as 'drone-mitigation systems' because South Canadianese gets Dog Buns! everywhere.  Art!

The weapon is described as being a 'jammer' with little more detail than that, which is deliberate, as the less the Ruffians know about it, the more effective it will be.  That picture above shows it held by what seems to be a lady, making it look even larger and deadlier than it is.  One presumes that using this most 'alli' piece of kit will allow the anti-aircraft missiles to be spared for more worthy targets.  As one of the gleeful by-lines asserted, anti-drone capability is no longer limited to Angry Neighbour With Shotgun, though I have heard of a harassed dog taking down one that flew a little too low.

O - that graffiti?  "Death to Russians and Putin" in case you wanted to know. And even if you didn't.

Motley!  Break out the bagpipes and let's get reeling!

Bridging It

Another architectural wonder from that brief article on the Beeb's website, with only another 3 to go if bridges aren't your thing HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE BRIDGES and don't worry, I've got another link to another photography article with a theme.  Thank you for taking up a little of the heavy creative lifting, Auntie Beeb!  Art?

This is the <squints hard> Q'eswachaka bridge in Peru, made out of grass.  Yes, you read that correctly:  grass, not glass.  The local tradition has the previous year's bridge callously dumped into the river below, and the natives then pound grass with rocks, soak it in water and then form cables with it.

Every year?  Sounds like a right pain.  Why not go with reinforced concrete and never have to build another for a century?

     Conrad: idle as they come.

"The Sea Of Sand"

Back to my magnum opus that was pretty well-received over on Fan Fiction <modest blushing>.  A rather grim Prologue, one has to admit.  This long-form fanfic features The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, for your information.  And it's loooooong, because as a fan writer you don't have to accommodate an editor, and yes that may be a good or bad thing depending on how good an author you are.

He began to run again, wearily, being forced to the south by the pursuing demon, further into the desert sands and away from the campsite and help.  The adrenaline surge that allowed him to outpace it earlier was a distant memory.

Yes, when the dune nearby the one he sat upon to watch the excavation quivered, rumbled and suddenly burst open to reveal the demon, he’d jumped upright in fear, dropping his cigarette and running headlong into the night.

The stitch came back again, worse than before, slowing him to a painful shuffle.  His bare feet burned, his throat spasmed.  Once more he bent forward, seeing the gritty sand up close.  His mouth felt dry as a stone, his tongue like a towel.

Foolish man, he said, to the wind and sand.  To take the lire and cigarettes and be happy with them.  No living thing heard his despairing words; in this the most silent of regions there were no creatures to hear him.

Once again the soft soughing of the Demon caught his ear, and Al-Hassan managed to stagger on for a few paces, until his ankle gave way.  He pitched to the sands, sprawling, feeling the cold grains dash against his face.  The hissing grew louder very quickly, as the pursuing monster slid down the dune face towards him.

Ibn Al-Hassan’s upthrown arm and hopeless wail of despair failed to stop the monster.  He died there, on the desert sands, and nobody ever knew.

Sorry but you can't have wall-to-wall fluffy bunnies and rainbows.  Where would the demons and hurricanes sit?

Hmmm The Real World Intrudes

As alluded to in a Facebook post, Conrad became aware that the Manchester In  The City ballfoot team were having a Roman triumph this evening, starting at 18:00, in order to celebrate The Pigskin Of Power or somesuch.  Stop me if I get too technical, okay?

BIRDSWEAT THIS MEANS TROUBLE! because it would inevitably snarl up traffic into and out of Gomorrah-on-the-Irwell, and it takes Your Humble Scribe quite long enough already -

But - hearken yea!  It's Rob our Mighty Team Leader, who's giving those of us who live in the far distant hill country a chance to leave now (15:00) and work from home to make the time up.

'Hmmm?' he puzzled.  'What was that white flash in the corner of my eye?'

It was Conrad, heading for the exit.  Art!

Happy, happy Conrad

There's A Starman

To coin a phrase.  Conrad has long reckoned that the most telling job of all at International Rescue is that of Space Monitor, which normally falls to John Tracy to man (none of that PC drivel here), except for one month or two where Alan gets to do the job, being an astronaut.  Art!

It's basically a giant eavesdropping station in the sky - and if the Ruffians were still around they'd be making trouble about it, except that they seem to have been snaffled up by the Bereznik Republic.  Ha!

The thing is, crew aboard this whacking big orbital antenna farm are incredibly isolated; yes, they can listen in on thousands of radio and telephone conversations, probably even social media and text messages, yet they have no human contact for months at a time.  Only Alan when he comes to deliver food and water.  Art!

It takes a very exceptional mindset to sustain or even thrive under these conditions.  Let's hear it for John Tracy!

Finally -

Excuse myself, just got to go down and put the tea on.  Back very shortly!

Okay, I'm back.  Your Humble Scribe has quite a few nicknames for Putin, none of which are allowed to be sweary because BOOJUM! prides itself on our SFW status.  Thus we have: Tsar Poutine (after a French-Canadian dish of chips, cheese curd and gravy); Dimya - the familiar diminutive of his first name, and which would send him bandy if he knew Conrad were using it, because only your bezzie mate is allowed; Bloaty Gas Tout, though I stole the 'Gas Tout' bit'; Puffy Petrol Pimp - quite proud of that one.  My latest is "Hydrocarbon Whore", which is skating perhaps a bit close to the edge, but it's Dimya, so who cares.  Art!

Sad Dimya is sad

EXCITING JOB OPPORTUNITY!

Forgive Conrad For Being A Cynical Old Beggar

Don't forget, if you don't feel Forgive, I still have the Remote Nuclear Detonator and know where you live.  Your Humble Scribe still remembers applying for jobs way back when, when dinosaurs stalked the Earth and you had to write letters with a pen and send a piece of paper out with a 'stamp' upon it, and turn up in a suit and tie for a job interview, which apparel Conrad laughingly dismisses as a 'monkey suit' as he detests such formal clothing and didn't learn to tie a tie until he was 37.  Art!

"How can I tie a tie or write a letter with such TINY ARMS!"

Your Humble Scribe is due to be made redundant (yes AGAIN!) in August, so will be trawling the waters of the job market at some point after that.  Not immediately, I plan to spend several months getting up late and drinking tea for England -

      - hearken yea - whilst playing random I-pod tunes what do we have here but "Swan Lake", which was traditionally played in the Sinister Union when one of their disgustrous dinosaur despots died.  Fingers crossed that this synchronises with the Bloaty Gas Tout!  Art?

Let it be noted that a nation capable of Tchaikovsky cannot be all bad.

Where were we?  O yes, job-hunting.  Conrad, being old, cynical and wise, is not at all enthused by the various websites that set out their wares in order to entrap likely candidates.  Ones that seem to allege that office life is One Giant Party are to be avoided at all costs, because they are lying.  Conrad also notes that there are few recruitment pictures of his ilk, that is, people over the tender age of sixty.  Once you hit 21,900 orbits of the sun - game over, baby, game over.  Art!

Conrad in a better mood than usual

Hmmmmm.  You'd jump at the opportunity to employ this bloke, wouldn't you?  Imagine him on the Reception desk.  99% of visitors with a complaint leave without bothering to lay it.

ANYWAY precious little of this has to do with "Thunderbirds", which is what I wanted to vent about today.  You see, Thunderbird 5 is the hidden asset of International Rescue, located in a geostationary orbit 22,500 miles above the Earth, able to eavesdrop on global communications 24/7.  Art!

Conrad not sure why the logo on the side, because who else is going to turn up at this location - Eamon Holmes?

Okay, imagine that John Tracy, who is the default crew member for TB5, decides that he needs a protracted leave Downside, due to Covid, or an appendectomy, or the need to woo his ardent swain Elena in Helsinki.  Art!

Yes, fellow-astronaut Alan can deputise for a short while, but Thunderbird 3 needs it's pilot, so that's a short-term solution.  Hence our hilarious title today.

     Are you a lone wolf?

     Can you operate unsupervised?

Do you have positive listening skills?

How much astronaut training have you had?

Any objections to joining a deliberately anonymous paramilitary organisation with no oversight or legal restrictions?

SAY HELLO TO <several levels of interactive blocking> INTERNATIONAL RESCUE!

One can imagine Jeff Tracy facepalming a facepalm.  Don't worry, Jeff, I'm sure Brains will manage a work-around!

Conrad would apply but Question #4 would probably deny me.  You can't help  but admit that it's a wonderful job.

The Origin Of Cats

Conrad has pointed out that modern domesticated dogs are the descendants of wolves, which is understandably hard to wrap your head around when you look at Edna Wunderhund.  Art!

So what of cats?  Conrad cannot really imagine tribesmen of pre-antiquity managing to tame and domesticate the Sabre-Toothed Tiger, so - whither cats?

It seems that feral cats lived alongside Hom. Sap. for many a year, until some of them decided that these funny-shaped cats were worth associating with, in order to get FREE FOOD!

The jury is still out on whom is the boss of whom.  If you want an answer, come back in about another two hundred thousand years*.

Another Bridge

Ha!  You can hold forth against the photographs that Conrad puts up here, just you wait, we've got yet another photographic exhibition to come thanks to the BBC.  Meanwhile - Art?

Yes indeed, somebody's architect was doing illegal substances in the design phase! and no mistake.  This spectacular exhibit is the Golden Bridge of Da Nang, which is supposed to represent a golden thread being held aloft by a pair of hands and is exactly the kind of structure you'd expect to see in Vietnam.  Art!

With puny humans for scale

Hey Bring On The Long-Term Fan-Fic!

Heck, if you insist, what choice does an author have?  Go on.  Remember that this is set in June 1940, when the Second World 'Special' Military Operation was on-going.  The Doctor and Sarah Jane are about to have a little bother in the Libya of 1941.

Apologies if you were expecting BOOJUM!'s usual frothy nonsense.  This is not as dark or sinister as "Tormentor" but it's no fairy-tale with happy skipping bunnies either.

Finally -

Your Humble Scribe is now at page 1010 of "Reclaiming History", Ol' Vinnie's attempt to destroy the Kennedy conspiracy industry with a book the size and weight of a breeze-block, and if Art can -

Conrad has reached the point where Ol' Vinnie takes on one Mark Lane, the Conspiranoid In Charge, whom basically kicked off the whole Kennedy Konspiracy Kottage <thinks> Krew.  This is interesting because Lane used a whole array of dishonest techniques and manipulations that Your Humble Scribe is familiar with thanks to the Truther conspiracy of 2001 - you know, when the Twin Towers came down.  Ol' Vinnie doesn't mention Nine-Eleven once in the body of his text so far, which might mean he was completely innocent of them and their dishonest panderings.  The similarities are remarkable, however.

Our Weekly Look Back In Ire

What Invokes My Ire?

Give me a minute and I'll think of something.

ANYWAY it's time to wheel out a semi-salacious pulp magazine cover, witter a bit and get to providing links to the past eight years-worth of BOOJUM!.  Next month we'll catch up to the ninth year of publication, which makes Conrad frown somewhat.  I've been doing this for nearly nine years?  Blimey, no wonder I don't write any more fictional stuff!  Art!

Conrad is guessing that the chap in the fedora and cape is Spider, who seems, on closer inspection, to have a pair of fangs protruding from his mouth.  Who the chap with the chopper is I have no idea, but he is clearly up to no good.  Also, why is he and his presumed minion both clutching the young lady's right arm.  Is her left arm immobilised in some way?  Well then, why didn't they deal with her right arm?

ANYWAY allow me to pop downstairs and stir the bigos <short pause> I'm back!  Now for the links.

The Thing Is ...

As You Should Surely Know By Now

Conrad maintains the hilarious conceit that all John Carpenter's films are documentaries, which is plainly silly.  "Dark Star" is patently NOT a documentary, and I'm beginning to have some doubts about "Big Trouble In Little China", a film probably twenty years ahead of it's t

ANYWAY One of Conrad's favouritest films is "The Thing" DO NOT MENTION THE REMAKE which is probably the most frightening film ever made.  Imagine it at the end, with McReady and Childs, and John with his cameraman, soundman, lighting expert and - hang on, this is beginning to seem a bit suspicious.  Art!

"Art successfully diverted the readers to cover Conrad's confusion"

Let me take you back to last week, when we were at the pub with Darling Daughter and Tom, and we were talking practical effects versus CGI in the remake and DD mentioned that Tame, their fellow housemate, had mentioned that the storyline was continued in the comic sequels.

Enter Conrad.  Conrad knew exactly what Tame meant, since he possesses those very same Dark Horse sequel comics himself.  Being an acquisitive little goblin I never throw any comics out, either, so I still have them, and DD expressed an interest in reading them.

     Ah but.  Art!

My comics collection

I think there's about two thousand comics in there.  I recall the format of TTFAW and it's not in any of those three stacks at the front.  There's a stack of boxes behind the loose ones, which proved to be nearly all "2000 AD", fifty per box, so I could ignore those.  Eventually, after innumerable trips up and down the ladder, we got to this point.  Art!

I went after that pile in the corner and Hay Pesto! It was a stack of short-run and one-offs, with a lot of Dark Horse publications, and - Art!

"Climate Of Fear" is the best of the three in terms of artwork and storyline, and - you may be ahead of me here thanks to those cover illustrations - they are definitely NOT for minors.  Nope nope nope.  Also, in the Letters page of Issue #4, a familiar name crops up.  Art!

Conrad's Sunday-best name

Another interesting thing cropped up when I was on Abebooks, checking out another purchase - you'll find out all about that one when it arrives, O Yes Indeedy Ally Sheedy - and I idly wondered how much TTFAW was going for.  Yes yes yes, I should check it out with Overstreet's Comic Guide except I don't have one so GREAT SQUEAKING BATS!  Check this out gentle readers - Art!

£1,649!

Egad!  It should be pointed out that this is the trade paperback of the first six issues, rather than the first six issues themselves, which might be worth even more.  Don't read them with greasy fingers, Sal!

Conrad wonders what some of his other, old editions are worth now.  I have a handful of "Century TV 21"s from back in the Sixties, you know, where the storylines were a bit rubbish but the artwork was awesome.  Art!

Motley, put on this silly hat, suspenders and a false nose and you, too, can be a comic*!

Further To Futurology

Conrad, as we all know, right royally reveres futurologist Gerry Anderson FUTUROLOGY NOT PUPPETS <eyes Remote Nuclear Detonator longingly> and noticed an interesting aspect of Thunderbird One, that most iconic of all International Rescue's craft, capable of Mach 28**.  Art!

Here it is in take-off profile, with the wings retracted, meaning less space needed for the above-ground exit.  Once in level horizontal flight the wings are extended to provide aerodynamic flight control  Art?

When TB1 arrives on-site, the main engines cut out, a cover slides back and out comes the HTOL engine, which fires up and allows TB1 to descend and land, terminal speed also being cut thanks to the deployed wings.  Art!

This is a pretty neat technical trick, going from VTOL to HTOL and back; I don't think there are any current aircraft that can manage such a feat.

Of course, I could be overthinking this ...

More Bridge-y Stuff

Don't worry if you're not at all keen on such architectural wonders, the BBC feature I'm cribbing from only has six examples.  Mind you, with such an inspiration I might go out and search for more!  What's that?  'Please no'?  Hmmm we'll see.  Art!

This is the Rakotzbrucke, also known locally as the "Devil's Bridge" because why not.  It dates back to 1860 and now stands in the splendidly named "Rhododendronpark Kromlau" in Saxony.  All the stonework, including that supposed outcrop beyond the bridge, is artificial.  Ironically, in order to preserve the fabric of said bridge, you are not allowed to cross it <sad face>.  Art?

This guarantees that a few visitors will defy authority in order to cross it, probably at night, having snuck in with ladders and torches <happy face>.

And Now For More Long-Form Fiction

You've had plenty of reprieve since "Tormentor" came to a finish, so now you're going to get a long-form fiction again, and this time I have a blurb to go with it.

"The Doctor and Sarah Jane are stuck in the desert war of early 1941, contending with suspicious British soldiers and hostile Italian ones.  Not only that, there's the sinister architectural dig at nearby Makan-al-Jinni - Arabic for 'Place of the Spirits' - where people vanish without trace ..."

Don't worry, Conrad does NOT make a Mary-Sue appearance and there's not the slightest smidgeon of hanky-panky with Sarah Jane.  We do have some standards.

"The Sea Of Sand

1)  Operations Commence

Makan Al-Jinni

Cyrenaica

Libya

9th June 1940

The man ran.  Ran without hope, without looking and without caring, in the unco-ordinated, flailing  fashion of a runner nearing exhaustion.  He had already lost his turban, after falling in a patch of soft sand, and his burnouse flapped raggedly in the chill desert night.  A stitch wracked him and he stopped running, drawing in rasping breaths, leaning forward and resting his hands on his upper thighs.  Above, diamond-hard stars looked down uncaringly.  Apart from the gentle soughing of wind, nothing disturbed the centuries-old silence of the Libyan desert.

Looking back across the sands, nothing showed up against the desert.  Ibn Al-Hassan allowed himself a momentary flash of hope, which dimmed and died within seconds.  The Demon rolled over a dune top, following in his footsteps.  Whilst not fast, it never slowed down or stopped, following him implacably.  It’s devil senses allowed it to track him over bare stone where his feet left no trace; he’d tried that an hour ago, when the demon first appeared out of the sands.  Legless, squat and not bothered by the soft sands that slowed Al-Hassan considerably, it had emerged straight out of a dune and came directly at him, waving spindly black arms.

Yes.  Only an hour ago, at dusk, Ibn had been squatting comfortably atop a dune, smoking one of the cigarettes the expedition distributed generously to their labourers.  He was the night watchman for the site, a job he anticipated being easy – after all, out here at Makan Al-Jinni, there were no other people but the ferenji, the foreigners who came to dig and explore.  The Bedu never came near the place.  So a night watchman would have an easy time of things.  Never mind that the other workers had left, making claims of demons, hauntings and spirits of darkness.

Ibn Al-Hassan cursed the ferenji for putting him near the excavation, he cursed the Demon following him, he cursed his own poverty and greed that made the expedition payments look acceptable, and he cursed his stupidity for dismissing uncle Hassan’s warning about Makan Al-Jinni.

Hopefully that's whetted your appetite.  If not, you're not going to enjoy the next nine months***.

Finally -
Ooops, the margin won't Left Align!  Jolly good thing we're near the end then, hmmmmm?  I'd like to inform you that I'm at Page 995 of "Reclaiming History" or 2/3s of the way through this breeze-block sized tome, and only now is Vincent Bugliosi tackling the conspiracy theorists head-on.  He's already subjected quite a few to incidental and tangential criticism but now he's really getting his teeth into them.  Art!

A Complete Volte-Face

If You're Unsure What That Means -

It's French for 'Making a 108º Turn' (Hey I found out how to get a 'Degree' symbol!) because in this post we are going to be looking exclusively at what's going on in Ukraine, whereas today's earlier post avoided the subject altogether.  Thus if the subject matter either bores or horrifies, you now know enough to avoid it.  Art!

So many rotors!

Let's begin with this beast.  What you are looking at is a Ruffian helicopter, the Ka-52 'Alligator', so-named because all the really good names had already been taken.  I think.  Can't really spot any particular resemblance to an alligator.  Green colouration?  Teeth?  A fondness for eating fish?

ANYWAY the distinctive thing about the Al' is the double-rotor arrangement.  This isn't new, the Kamov company who make these things have a history of double-rotor helichoptoids, which, if Art will put down his calendar-book of Mara Corday cheesecake photos -

The idea with these double-stacked rotors is that they operate in different directions, thus cancelling out any overall torque, meaning that the helichoptoid doesn't fly around in a circle about it's own vertical axis.  That would be a bad thing.  Not only would the flight crew get airsickness, their ride would crash.  The thing is, having a double-stacked rotor increases your height profile significantly, and on the modern battlefield you want to be as small as possible.  Nearly all other helicopters use a tail rotor to counteract torque, and thus have a much smaller cross-section on radar, which matters when your oppos have both radar and anti-aircraft missiles.  The Ruffians like to brag about how it's so survivable.  Ahem.  They lost 4 Al's within days of the 'Special' Military Operation beginning.  O and apparently it has an ejection-seat system for the crew if things go pear-shaped, which means the rotors stop rotating as they eject (hopefully) so they have the choice of crash and burn or slice and dice.  Art!

Like this but with added terror

Okay, Intro - what you might call The Tale Of A Tail - is over.

Enter The Terminator

NO!  Nothing to do with Arnold or Skynet.  No, we are talking about a Ruffian armoured fighting vehicle, one that they are passionately proud of, and which featured in the rather low-key Victory Parade on 9th May.  Art!

Hey, they nick-named it.  Expect James Cameron to sue.

It mounts two 30 mm cannon (aplologies for using Metric), missile-launchers, grenade-launchers and a machine gun, and was designed for urban combat, where it might very well have been at least capable, since it's so recently introduced that idiot conscripts couldn't have mis-managed it's maintenance.

However, during the ferocious months-long battle for Mariupol, an URBAN COMBAT ENVIRONMENT, none were seen.  Why not?  Conrad suspects the same reasons the T-14 hasn't been seen.  These things are rare and expensive, and if they get destroyed Uralvagonzavod cannot replace them.  Also, seeing them destroyed by a babushka with a Molotov cocktail thrown from the third storey wouldn't look good on Youtube.  Art!

Now that combat is moving into the wide open spaces, of course the Puffy Petrol Pimp has given the go-ahead for their use, because he's an idiot.

Lasers!  Dolphins With Lasers Attached To Their Heads!

Don't laugh, the Ruffians have trained dolphins defending their naval base at Sevastopol, from SEALS*.  They also claim to have deployed 'Laser Battle Stations' to Ukraine, the truth of which remains to be seen, because you can tell when a Ruffian official is lying: their mouth is moving.  Art!

This monstrous bit of kit is "Zadira", which is Ruffian for "Bully" THE JOKES JUST WRITE THEMSELVES and is - allegedly - a laser system that can destroy drones at a range of 3 miles.  If they stay perfectly still for 5 seconds.  If it isn't raining.  If there's no mist or fog. If there's no smoke.  If this thing is even in Ukraine, which is highly doubtful, and if there's more than one of them.  It looks like a big, fat juicy target itself, and do you know what?  Ukrainian artillery can hide in dead ground from 10 miles away and shell Zadira without it ever even seeing them.  That's ballistics versus direct-line-of-sight.  What are it's target-acquisition and acquirement abilities?  In other words, if the Ukrainians send in two Bayraktar drones to attack if from opposite directions, is it going to be able to destroy one and then switch to the other in time to avoid becoming another battlefield statistic?  Does it have to recharge between shots?  How many shots can it fire <continue ad nauseum> Art!

Marvano's comic-book version of "The Forever War" illustrates this point, and I include it here because I shifted an Imperial ton of comics today in order to find a 10-issue run of Dark Horse comics that are an unofficial sequel to "The Thing" and which Darling Daughter expressed an interest in.

"Who The Hell Builds Those Missiles"

Sorry, couldn't resist, it's a lyric from The Sound's "Jeopardy" album and it sums up a critique that President Zed made of Ruffian missile bombardment of his homeland.  He states that the Ruffian hordes have fired 2,154 missiles at Ukraine, and then mocks their 'Wunder-Waffen' reliance on Laser Battle Stations.  Conrad, via various means and metrics, understood that the Ruffians had an arsenal of 2,000 Iskander missiles and the last he knew they had fired 1,500 of these - at £6 million a pop.  £12 billion expended if they've fired off their total arsenal.  Art!

A metaphorical Number Two

The thing is, the Votkinsk THE JOKES KEEP WRITING THEMSELVES arsenal that built these missiles is going to have a hard time making any more, since - once again - they need Western electronic components.  "Who the hell builds these missiles"?  Patently not the Ruffians anymore.

Finally -

In what probably amounts to squeaky-bum time for her crew, Tsar Poutine has announced that the Black Sea Fleet's new flagship is the 'Admiral Makarov', a mere frigate as opposed to the cruiser 'Moskva', and it's stretching things to call it a frigate.  A 'corvette with pretensions' is closer to the truth, according to folk wise in naval matters.  Art!

     And for comparison -

This news will doubtless inspire and hearten crewmen, except they'll be the Ukrainian anti-ship missile battery crewmen poised over their Neptune or Harpoon ordnance.  There are unconfirmed rumours that the Makarov is in dry dock, having already been damaged by a missile attack.

*  Military in-joke for you there.

An Experimant

NO!  That Is Not A Typo

<twitches and looks at the Remote Nuclear Detonator> it is an hilarious pun, being a portmanteau conflation of 'Experiment' and 'Rant', which is what this particular blog item is going to be.  You see, Conrad has acquired a long list of Dog Buns! outrageous Codeword solutions and - well, if there are 13 of them, and I aim to manage a 1,000 word blog, then that would mean only 76 words per definition needed to hit the total.  Of course there wouldn't be room for anything else, and even the Intro would have to be short.  So al we need is an enticing picture - Art!

Art has a pash for Mara Corday, I have Annette Peacock.

     Let the excoriating outpouring begin!

"KOWTOW": Presumably younger readers will be unfamiliar with this word, as it refers to a custom looooong expired, but which Emperor Xi would probably like to bring back in his august presence.  My Collins Concise defines it as: "To touch the forehead to the ground as a sign of deference" or formal grovelling, if you like.  From the Chinese 'Ko' meaning 'To strike' and 'T'ou' meaning 'Head'.  Well well, it's not often we get to define and translate a word that's neither Latin <hack spit> or Greek <hack hack spit spit>.  Art!

The Kowtow or 'Chinese Bow'

"NEXUS": I know that you're thinking and no, nothing to do with the Rude & Baron comics/character, which is a pretty awesome space-opera tale inv

ANYWAY my CC defines this as "A means of connection; link; bond" and inevitably it's derived from Latin, "Nectere" meaning 'To bind'.  How unfair is it to match the most commonly used letter with one of the least used?  You don't often see it in print and the only time I can recall it being used is in Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" in the line "It's the nexus of the crisis" and you can read what you like into it as Conrad has never understood the lyrics.  Art!

"SYNOD":  Say what?  ARE WE ALL CLERICS NOW!  Conrad vaguely recognises that this has a religious element and now has to go look it up in his faithful CC.  Aaha.  "A special ecclesiastical council , especially of a diocese, formally convened to discuss ecclesiastical affairs."  Yes yes yes, now we need to define 'Ecclesiastical' - "Of or relating to the Christian church" and 'Diocese' - The district under the jurisdiction of a bishop'.  Well, we all know more than we did five minutes ago, and once again, how many times do you ever read or say this word?  Precisely!  Art!

ART!
A Synod.

"SHAMAN": Nothing to do with fraud nor a mis-spelling of someone gender-fluid.  No, this is what we in the West used to call a 'medicine-man', that being someone who practices Shamanism, a religious belief that the world abounds in good and evil spirits.  These spirits can only be influenced by the shaman, making it a pretty good gig (and it probably has a closed-shop trades union too) for al their tribal members who want intercession in order to avoid lightning-strikes, athletes foot, wheat rust and crossed eyes.  Not sure a shaman will cure that last one, mate, you're better off with an opthalmic surgeon.  Another first in translation here at BOOJUM! because it derives from the Ruffian 'Shaman'.  Art!

"ZYGOTIC":  WHAT THE DOG BUNS ARE YOU PLAYING AT!  <takes deep breaths>  Okay, my CC has it as relating to a ZYGOTE, which is "The cell resulting from the union off an ovum and a spermatazoa".  Thanks for that.  And HOW UNFAIR IS THAT SOLUTION?  Using two of the least-used letters RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER.  I'd call that a juxtaposition of junk.  Bah!

Biology stuff

"MARQUESS":  I know this is to do with the aristocracy, not tents.  A noblewoman of a rank higher than a archimandrite but lower than an escutcheon?  Okay, okay, I was making that up.  According to CC "In This Sceptred Isle, a nobleman ranking between a duke and an earl; see also 'Marquis'.  So I did, and a 'Marquis' still isn't a tent.  It's a nobleman abroad  ranking above a count, and is occasionally used as a substitute for 'Marquess'.  Art!

Close wnough

"FETA": AGAIN WITH THE FOREIGN FOODSTUFFS!  I ask you, a four-letter word ending in "A" - I only got this because I am hot stuff at Codewords; you, gentle reader, would have struggled.  O yes, it's a cheese, originating in Greece, made from goat's milk.  Why goats?  Don't they have cows in Greece?  <ponders musingly>.

<short pause>

This is getting off-topic but since when did that stop us?  I just found out that Greece has a milk industry with 10 million goats, 5 million sheep and just 100,000 cows.  There's a reason in there that we may come back to.  Art!

"PHYLUM": AGAIN WITH THE BIOLOGY!  <sighs wearily>.  Conrad is aware this is part of how a species is defined (Taxonomy?) and you have a tree of different titles going down to whatever you're classifying.  Aha!  My CC states "A major taxonomic division of living organisms that contain one or more classes, and which is extremely unfair to include as a Codeword solution".  Well, there it is in black and white YOU PIKERS! I was close enough in my definition to earn a brownie point and a chocolate-coated coffee bean.  Art!

Foxy

"VOCODER": WHAT, ARE WE ALL STUDIO TECHNICIANS NOW?  Conrad is more aware of what the effects produced by one of these are, than the technical description of what one is.  Technically, a music synthesiser that utilises the human voice as an oscillator, and if Art will get off his wing-chair -

One of the songs that features dogs barking rather than humans is - you may be ahead of me here - 'Dogs' by Pink Floyd.  I must play it within earshot of Edna and see what she makes of it.  Heh!

Finally -

Well, there you go, only nine Codewords ranted about, so I have a few left for a more normal blog at a later date.  Except I have a stack of Codewords to complete and DOUBTLESS there will be more unjustifiably unfair solutions to add.  Also note that this is the only mention of Puffy Petrol Pimp.
