Konstruction Karma

I Know You'll Forgive The Deliberate Mis-Spelling

Because nothing is funnier than messing around with words, right?  Be careful how you reply, this Remote Nuclear Detonator is itching to be tested.

Okay, this Intro is taken from a Quoran question that stated "I was recently fired from a company.  My old boss just contacted me asking work-related questions.  Should I respond?"

This has been asked on many occasions, as South Canadian employees have little to no rights when it comes to being fired.  Most states are 'At will', which means a manager can fire an employee for having mis-matched socks, being left-handed or hailing from Miles City, Montana.  Art!

One of the 'attractions' of Miles City.
I've no idea either.

Many responses from Quorans have been along the lines of "Give me a timeline and intermediate project deadlines, and I'll give you a quote as a contractor."  Which is employee-guff for "I am going to gouge you for $250 per hour, 40 hours a week on a minimum 4 month contract".

This reply usually means there is no more contact and the old boss has to hire and train someone new from scratch, sometimes more than one person, even three at times, which completely negates any supposed savings accrued from firing the original employee.  Art!

The reply I'm going over now had to do with one of the construction managers at a large South Canadian building company being fired, along with his staff.  Why so?  Because Bottomhole Boss then brought in a lot of replacements who were cheaper.

Original Poster, however, had an ace in the hole; the project engineer had warned him pre-firing that the company would pester him for 'as built' drawings and reports for the building he was working on.  I should explain that 'As built' drawings are technical schematics that show what has actually been constructed as opposed to the original blueprints, as there are often many minor changes and several major ones that track building progress across time.

Sure enough, BB rings OP and asks him if he has the 'As built' plans, because nobody on-site can find them.

"They went into my apartment dumpster last week."

Shocked silence.  What about the test results from the reports? is the next question.  The engineer needed them forty-eight hours ago.

Same destination as the AB drawings, replies OP.  Art!

"OP cackled madly"

"Because you are a bottomhole and if your guy can't figure stuff out that's not my problem," explained OP.  That was the end of any effort to get info out of OP.  However, BB was still in trouble, as his guy had no idea how to run reports and thus obtain test results.  An outside company had to be contracted to do this work, and they gouged BB because they could, since he had no other option.

The karma hasn't finished karma-ing, mind.  Thanks to the delays and absence of contractually-required data, BB's company were denied the final 10% of their payment.  Which was BB's profit margin.  There's no more anecdote from OP but failing to make a profit can severely impact a company, leading to an inability to retain their workforce, or lose bids to tender.

BB found out you get what you pay for! and that a pay cut may cut back.

'On The Edge'

No!  Nothing to do with the guitarist from U2 and his life story.  Rather, this is the theme that the BBC has put up for photographers around the world to respond to, and they have done.  Art!

No, it's not a co-ordinated paraglider club in action, it's a time-lapse sequence of one chap taking to the air from a cliff edge in Patagonia.

Conrad Is ANGRY!

Yes, pretty much business as usual, in other words.  We've not had a rail and rant by Your Humble Scribe about Codewords for a while, apart from that photo evidence that I don't cheat at them, because I'd gone horribly wrong.

EPIGON:  Conrad had no idea and I bet you don't know either.  Let me consult my trusty Collins Concise.

Hmmm.  Apparently, one of the descendants of the seven mythical Greek heroes who went up against Thebes.  YOU WHAT!  How in Dog Buns are people expected to know this?  Art!

Get Epigone

TUREEN: Yes, the word that threw me and which I considered might be PUTEES or RUPEES.  What is it and where does it hail from?  "A large, deep usually rounded dish with a cover, used for serving soups, stews, etc."  From the French "Terrine", a type of earthenware vessel.  Art!

You know, I think there's one of these knocking around The Mansion

DRESSAGE:  If this is anything to do with fashion or haute couture then it's a ridiculously long reach to expect Conrad, The Man With No Fashion Sense, to get it.  Let me consult the CC.

O my.  "The training of a horse to perform manoeuvres in response to the rider's body signals."  Well, that was unexpected.  Art!

Good Luck With That, Sparky

Today saw the commencement of E. Jean Carroll's civil defamation and sexual battery case against Darth Marmalade, whom may or may not turn up in court.  His lawyers have been coy about whether he will or not.  Privately Conrad suspects they are praying to the high heavens that DJ Tango doesn't demand to be put on the stand 'to clear his name'.  He's already been lashing out on Twitter Except Rubbish (a.k.a. Truth Social), to the extent that the trial judge has admonished Joey Tacky about his immoderate posts.  I quote: "Mr Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told the judge he would ask his client to "refrain from any further posts on this case".  You can see why they don't want him on the witness stand, because he ignores advice and shoots from the lip.

"What!  What did he say now?"

"The Sea Of Sand"

Sarah encounters an unlikely ally in her covert attempts to get to Makin-al Jinni.

‘Psst!  Miss Smith!’ came the whisper once again.  Reflexively raising her eyebrows, Sarah realised that Professor Templeman was trying to get her attention.

The vehicles were parked along the N1 track, where the Professor leant out from a stack of pallets and gestured to Sarah.

‘I know where there’s a truck,’ he managed in a hoarse stage-whisper, taking her upper arm in a punishing grip and leading her away from the parked vehicles and soldiers.  ‘Doctor Smith sent it in as a decoy, remember? after draining the radiator, but it will still run for a while.  We can get out to the dig in it, anyway.’

For a second Sarah remained nonplussed.  Why on earth would the non-worldly Professor want to get over to the depot?

‘I want to know what happened to Albert,’ confided the Professor.  ‘Bourgebus was killed, poor devil, by these monsters.  I just hope Albert wasn’t, too.  Damn it, did you know he never told me about being able to fly?’

Since there were only six of them in total, it wasn’t hard for Sarah and the Professor to slip away to find the abandoned Chevrolet, which had rammed itself into a stack of telegraph poles, badly damaging the bumper and radiator.  The ignition key remained where the Doctor left it, in the ignition.  Templeman shuffled his considerable bulk into the driver’s seat and they were off.

Finally -

It's a good seven months since I last visited Gomorrah-on-the-Irwell and I'm beginning to notice a few changes around the old town. Photos if I remember.

Hung, Drawn And First Financial Quartered

Okay, A Little Background First For The Ghoulish Amongst You

In medieval and early modern times, those found guilty of High Treason were sentenced to be 'Drawn, Hanged And Quartered', to get the phrase correct.  The 'Drawn' part seems a bit faint-hearted, as the guilty party was taken to the place of execution on a hurdle.  Art!

"For the love of all that's holy, hurry up and invent toilet paper!"

Sir William Wallace was one of the more famous recipients of this somewhat harsh treatment.  Looking into the 'Drawn' a little further, it was at the very least a horribly uncomfortable method of travel.  Art!

Once at the Plaza Of Punishment, the prisoner was then hung, except not with the merciful long-drop that broke the neck and killed instantly.  No, they were given the asphyxiation version, until they were nearly dead, and then cut down.  No, they weren't reprieved, they were then disembowelled, beheaded and their rapidly-cooling carcass chopped (perhaps sawn?) into four pieces.

So the phrase implies extreme punishment.

What else is getting extreme punishment?  Why, the Ruffian economy!  Figures were released by their Ministry of Finance earlier in April that show what a farrago their finances have become in Q1, which for those not of an economic bent means First Quarter, or January, February and March.  Thanks to Joe Blogs for the data and background information in his next to most recent vlog.  Art!

Ruffian Minister Of Finance Anton Siluanov

Let's look at a few of these figures, and don't forget this is OFFICIAL Ruffian data.
Overall Income for Q1 totalled ₽5700 trillion, which might sound impressive, but which is 20% down on 2022's Q1, which stood at ₽7163.  Or, $120 billion for 2022 versus $70 billion for 2023, thanks to the fading ruble.  Not good.  Art!
The theatre of screams

Oil & Gas revenues in Q1 of 2023 were waaaaaaay down for this quarter last year, down to ₽1635 trillion rubles, from ₽2974, a drop of 45%.
Income Tax revenues have also fallen, meaning the state is able to skim less from the Ruffian workforce, in this case a drop of 22%.  Attempting to raise tax revenues by increasing the rate of tax might work in the short term, but it would infuriate the average Ruffian, who cannot see anything positive about the Special Idiotic Operation.  Art!
Yes, every magazine is empty.  Just in case.

Expenses have also increased hugely, from
₽6029 trillion in 2022 Q1, to ₽8077 trillion in 2023's Q1, and increase of 34%.  Ooo-er Matron!  The expense target for the whole of 2023 was supposed to be ₽29056 trillion but is on target for ₽32308 trillion.  And of course Ivan Fedorovich doesn't see any benefit from these expenses, because they're all in the military and thus a laughably large distance for any kind of improvements in society.  You know, like roads and schools and hospitals, frippery like that.

Deficit for 2023's Q1 was ₽2400 trillion, up from ₽1134 trillion last year, an increase of over 100%.  Ooooh that's not good either.  Since the overall deficit target for 2023 was ₽2925 trillion rubles, Ruffia has now hit 83% of that total in Q1, meaning that the Ruffians are on course for a ₽10 quadrillion deficit for this year.

Eeee, Jean, Carol

As you may recall, today is the day that jury selection starts for the civil suit lodged by journalist E. Jean Carroll against DJ Tango.  Conrad rather wondered if it would be settled out of court before actually going to trial, yet it hasn't.

So, as you should surely recall, DJ Tango and his lawyers use the same playbook that's served him and them well for the last 40 years: lie, deny and delay, delay, delay.  They hope and trust that the other party will run out of money, die of old age or simply give up.  Art!

Close enough

Now they've been requesting a delay because EJC's trial expenses are being met by one Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkdIn and a donor to either the Wizard Lizard Gizzards or the Ice Cream Bandits, which the lawyers feel is the height of wickedness and depravity -

     NO DELAY! replied the judge.

'On The Edge'

Back to the BBC's latest themed photography presentation on just that topic.  I've skipped over a few that were, frankly, rather dull.  A pigeon on a building ledge does not get the senses pounding I'm afraid.  Art!

Much better.  A cat looking down on humans below, as all cats believe is their natural position.

I Hate Kevin Hart

Conrad has never met the man but puts the curse of Dog Buns! upon him anyway.

Why so?  Because of my rucksack.  Art!

Manchester Arena Foyer

If an artist is performing in the Arena, as was Kevin Hart tonight, the security staff will not allow anyone with a large rucksack to exit via the Foyer, and my current employer is based in the Foyer.  Believe me, the Arena security staff are Dog Buns! insistent on rucksack security.

So!  It's off to the double doors that lead to an elevator and Floor one, then through the double set of double doors and across the car park, turn right, down Shaw Street and along the A56, and that's an extra ten minutes I'll never get back.

That's why I hate Kevin Hart.

"The Sea Of Sand"

Don't fret if you feel this load of tosh has been going on for months (it has!) as we're now nearing the end, so gird your loins.  Sarah is plotting to go and see what's keeping the Doctor, who is long overdue.

‘Not a bad idea, Miss Smith.  I think we can head back now.  Dominione, can you send one of your chaps ahead to man the look-out platform?’

Their rag-tag convoy picked its way across the rock and sandstone to the depot again, a depot now looking very battered.  Sabotage inflicted by previous attacks, not to mention all the fighting within the grid of storage stacks, lent an air of untidy chaos to the whole area.  Captain Dobie, had he survived, would have been appalled.

Sarah’s idea, of course, had been to steal transport as soon as possible, and then make her way to Makin Al-Jinni, to rescue the Doctor.  Or at least find out what he was up to, staying away for so long.

Her intent was noble, her opportunities were limited, and her success was negligible.  The bio-vores had removed all the spare Sahariana’s from the depot for recycling.  The Doctor’s spiking a fuel bowser days ago had destroyed the parked ranks of Bedford and Morris trucks.  Torrevechio and Doretti kept a fatherly eye on their Sahariana’s, and the towed Bedford was useless, the clutch destroyed.

‘Psst,’ came a sound, rather like a soda siphon.  Sarah looked around in puzzlement, wondering who was making a gin and tonic at this point of the day?

Finally -

Hmmmm well our batch of 32 agency staff is now down to 27.  Conrad predicts that several of these will be gone by next week, thanks to the Devil's Digital Devices.  We were all sternly warned on Day One that mobiles are NOT ALLOWED on the floor and can only be used in the break-out areas.

Two young ladies to my port remained tickling their phones all day.

Today a manager addressed the whole lot of us, cautioning that the Arena and environs are a very secure area - Kevin Hart can attest to that - and that our workplace is also very secure so NO PHONES ON THE FLOOR.

Not a problem for Conrad as he hates them anyway.  But as for the younger generation -

     We shall see.  Hart!

The King-Maker Is Dead!

Long Live The Ki - O He Can't He's Dead

This one may be a little obscure for anyone not hailing from the shores of South Canada, so let me explain that "The King is dead - long live the King" refers to Kingy Number One expiring, often at the end of a long sharp pointy object, and the new Kingy Number Two stepping into his place.  Or, more probably, sitting on his uncomfortable metal throne.  Art!

CAUTION!  Requires cushion

At a tangent - our favourite direction - 'Kingmaker' refers to a power behind the throne who exerts themselves to get one of their royal faction crowned.  The term applies <I checked my Brewer's> principally to Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, because whilst he backed Henry VI, Hen stayed in power.  When Nev transferred his allegiance to Edward IV, Eddie got to be crowned.  Art!

Nev

Bear in mind that Nev's salad days were in the late Fifteenth century, yet Your Humble Scribe is talking about news hot off the press, if the scintilla of electrons on a monitor screen can be so described.  Art!

Meet Tucker.  He came to fame on Fox News, whose lawyers claimed (successfully!) that what he said on air was so utterly ludicrous that nobody could take it or him seriously, thus it was entertainment not news, you can't sue us, nyah nyah nyah.

He was immensely influential and powerful, pandering to his adoring audience with a diet of extreme right-wing bilge and nonsense, as even he admitted in private communications.  Aspiring politicians of the Ice Cream Bandit party (or was it the Wizard Lizard Gizzard party?) would grovel and clamour to be interviewed by him, because DJ Satsuma was a biiiiiig fan of Tucker and thus they would be seen by His Royal Marmalade.  Tucker's favour or criticism could make or break a politician, he really was that able.

Yeah, well, that 'You can't sue us' rang rather hollow as of last week, when Fox News caved and paid $787 million to settle Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit.  Art!

You might think that bad enough.  Well, hold onto that tabletop as if you were the Wrestling Midget In Elevator Shoes himself! because here comes Smartmatic, also alleging defamation and seeking $2.7 BILLION in damages.  Even if they settle for half, between them and DVS that's $2 billion Fox will be paying out.

When he signed off on Friday, Tucker's last words were "See you Monday".

Er - no.  "FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways," the company said in a short news release. "Mr. Carlson's last program was Friday April 21st."

O I say, that's a bit savage!  So he got sacked over the weekend with no clue about what was going to happen.

This is breaking news, as I said, so there's no official announcement from Fox about why they fired Ol' Tuck.  Conrad is willing to bet that his contract has a Non-Disclosure Agreement so he's not going to be able to put his side of the story anytime soon.  Art!

Channelling the spirit of the cat that ate the canary

Onto Sweeter Matters

Not that such an action would be difficult.

Conrad found another webpage from the BBC that was celebrating global photographic responses to the theme "On The Edge", so here's one of them.  Art!

Courtesy Vic Cotton

There's no indication of where this shot was taken, just that it's next to a huge waterfall and was shot in the depths of winter.  Matey is taking somewhat of a risk here, given that snow and ice is slippery, and it's a long way down.

"Things Fall Apart, The Centre Cannot Hold*"

In Ruffia the outskirts aren't doing any too well either. The Pest In A Bulletproof Vest is desperately trying to keep the impact of his Special Idiotic Operation as low as possible on the metropolitan areas of Saint Petersburg and Moscow, because if the people there suffer, so will he.  I have a snippet from Quora about this very subject.

But not only the federal budget struggles. In the 4th quarter of 2022, tax revenues dropped in regions as well:

·        Tyumen region: minus 48.9%

·        Krasnoyarsk Territory: -39%

·        Murmansk Region: -33%

·        Khakassia: -32%

·        Kemerovo Region: -30%

     Art!

Tyumen oblast
Krasnoyarsk krai
Murmansk oblast

You get the picture, all provincial territories way out in the boonies, where there aren't any pavements, indoor toilets or washing machines.  Now their tax income has collapsed, so say goodbye to things like beds in hospitals, blackboards in schools and live pensioners.  That's some plan that Peter The Average is executing there!

"The Sea Of Sand"

Our gallant band of human survivors are having a bit of a discussion, which amounts to Sarah telling them what to do.

Because it’s not! raged Sarah silently.  That’s not how it is and it’s not how it’s going to be if I can help it!

‘Of course!  You’re both quite correct!’ she merely said, smiling sweetly and in a quiet conversational tone.

Roger took this reply at face value.  Dominione, more experienced in the ways of womanhood, looked at her sceptically.  Sarah responded with an expression of utter innocence that made the Italian even more sceptical.

‘I would suggest that since the bio-vore’s attack on the depot has been thwarted, we could move back there,’ said Sarah.  ‘Torrevechio’s giant blow-torch could do with refuelling, and we might also consider our friends approaching  from the west.’

Her veiled reference to the predicted arrival of the Afrika Korps, and the Regio Esercito in close company, made Roger uneasy.  Pretty obviously the depot could not be defended from an attack, not when the garrison amounted to himself alone.  He was outnumbered three-to-one by the Italians, even if they were still observing the informal truce.  Preparing Mersa Martuba for demolition – well, that was a possibility, perhaps if they pretended it needed to be kept out of bio-vore hands –

- aha! he realised, pleased with his own cleverness, fondling the key in his pocket.

     She's up to something.

Back In The Saddle

Conrad is doing training this week for the job he got via Adecco, working with PIP claimants etcetera etcetera.  I don't think I'll identify the actual employer, just in case, as this was my policy since about 12 years ago.  You don't want to wind up an employer who is large enough to have professional web trawlers looking for people dissing them.

ANYWAY I now have to contend with First Bus and their service in Manchester, which was as execrable as ever.  During the span of 20 minutes none of four buses bothered to turn up, so I got the inconvenient 182.  Bah!

Upper Deck tickets half-price!

We Can't Be Right All The Time

Some of us are only partially-human after all, I'll have you know.  Conrad was attempting to do a Codeword this morning, for the first time in a couple of weeks, and not only was I a bit rusty, I was also somewhat thrown off by the fact of being at work after three months of creative idleness.  Art!

Stop whining and crane your neck

The false trail when I reasoned that the word at extreme starboard had to be RUPEES, since PUTEES didn't fit.  And that has to be JUSTIFY.

Except not.  It was TUREEN and CUSTODY.

     Bah!

Legal Beagle

No, You May Not Call Me A 'Hound Dog'

Although Conrad is slightly confused as to what else one may be called whilst still being a dog.  A Fish Dog?  A Cetacean Dog?  A Nudibranch Pseudo-Coelenterate Dog*?

ANYWAY we are going to be addressing the South Canadian legal system, of which Your Humble Scribe is far more aware than the British version, for various reasons.  One reason is that I follow Devin Stone, a South Canadian attorney, who has his own Youtube channel titled "Legal Eagle".  Art!

Close enough

Okay!  For here we are going to cover the hilariously inept exploits of the legal team supposedly representing Darth Marmalade in a civil court case brought against him by E. Jean Carroll, due to start on Tuesday 25th April.  There are two parts to the suit: one for defamation, and another for sexual battery (don't fret we shan't be touching that one with a barge-pole tied to another barge-pole).  Hey Mister Tiny Hands, Art needs a picture.

Sophisticated, that's us

About the defamation charge - DJ Orange claimed that his original speech about EJC was covered by Executive Privilege, since he made it whilst Prez.

Maybe so, except he then goes and repeats it verbatim on social media AS A PRIVATE CITIZEN.

ANYWAY it has been decided that the jury for this trial are going to be anonymous, thanks to DJ Tango's penchant for doxxing people who are not him or his slavering minions.  Bear this in mind.

Attorneys Joe Tacopina and Alina Habba then present Judge Kaplan, presiding over the trial, with a petition to delay it, because DJ Satsuma is currently in the headlines for abusing campaign finance laws, and they want things to cool down before the trial proceeds.  Judge Kaplan, probably aware that Trump attorneys seek to delay, delay and delay again, informs them that the two trials have 0% in common and that jury selection will begin on 25th April.  Art!

JK Growling

JT and AH then trawl social media to find all the nasty mean people saying horrid things about Citizen Trump, which they print off and take to the judge, saying "Look!  Look!  These people are being awful!  We must have the jury details so we can ensure none of these bottomholes end up sitting in judgement on Pre - on Citizen Trump."

NO replies the judge.  Darth Marmalade has a habit of threatening jurors, judges, courts, public officials, federal employees, Smokey The Bear and Grandma Clampett.  Art!

Hmmmm one to be wary of

Joe, ever the trier, comes back with: "You need me on the jury selection panel".

NO! replied the judge.  Darth Marmalade has a habit of threatening jurors, judges, courts, public officials, federal employees, Smokey The Bear and perhaps not Grandma Clampett because she has a 30.06.

Joe, trying reallllly hard, comes back with: "You really, really need to have me involved in the whole jury selection process to the point of seeing them all face-to-face and taking photographs of them along with fingerprints, DNA evidence and twenty-four point background checks."  Art!

Joe's unique 'hands-on' approach to incriminating documents
0
Judge Kaplan pointed out, in citric legal prose, that Joe had not been present at the Jury Selection Process meeting two weeks prior, when all these issues had been explained.  Joe No Go.

Conrad wonders if the trial will be settled at the very last minute.  Watch this space!

Well Yes Of Course He Does

You may have seen Conrad's somewhat gobsmacked reports on Wrexham Ballfoot Club, and how they got back into the Ballfoot League, and how their owners were a South Canadian and a British American.  Here's the British American.  Art!

If Jay can manage it without pegging out, he's got an invitation to Pinewood Studios in six weeks to see the next 'Deadpool' film being filmed.  British Americans - quality people!

The Sky At Night

No, this item is not about the television program on astronomy as fronted by Sir Patrick Moore for decades and decades (about fifty-five years).  Rather, it is about the end of that film "2010" which we mentioned in yesteryon's blog.  Art!

The thing is, those inscrutable aliens who transform Jupiter into a pocket star haven't taken into consideration the sensibilities of terrestrial astronomers, because they are going to be very hard put to detect stars by physical observational methods.  'Jupiter' is going to flood the heavens with so much illumination that visual observation of distant astronomical objects will become impossible.

This is possibly balanced-out by the practical observations of the Sol-Jupiter solar system suddenly becoming a binary star, where the Gallilean moons survive and become a miniature solar system of their own.

Of course, I might be overthinking this .....

The 'Leonov' undergoes aerobraking

Interesting to see a film thirteen years in the past achieve waaaaaay beyond what we can manage now.  Sorry, Arthur!

"The Sea Of Sand"

Having experienced hi-jinks on Wastelandworld, we are now back to humble Planet Earth, and a little contention between our gallant human survivors.

Twenty Eight: The Idea, The Time

Sarah encountered resistance in promoting her idea of rescuing the Doctor.

‘There are only six of us left, and you and the Professor are not soldiers,’ carped Roger.

‘Neither you nor Templeman are soldiers, and there are only six of us,’ grumbled Dominione.

‘Oh really!  You two are the living end!’ snapped Sarah, quite convinced that her idea was being stalled simply because she was a woman.  ‘I am quite capable of driving a truck, or pointing a gun if it comes to that.’

On cue, the two officers exchanged looks.

‘Sarah,’ said Roger, trying to remain patient.  ‘Those monsters know where we are.  We have killed a considerable number of them, quite besides the slaughter inflicted by those Blenheim bombers we saw.  They are going to be out for our blood!  You cannot simply decide to march into Makin Al-Jinni and declare that you want Doctor Smith returned.’

          Tenente Dominione was more subtle.

‘At which point does this present, this time, our here-and-now, become the one you want it to be?  How do you know?  How do you know that Dottore Smith going missing is not how the future ought to be?’

     Ah, profound perceptions there.

Rolling, Rolling, Roeling

Yes, it's our favourite ancient and medieval historian sitting in judgement on Hollywood et al trying to make things look cooler than they really were.  Art!

Conrad has never heard of this, and can only consider it a prequel to "A Dance To The Music Of Time", except that since ADTTMOT takes place in the twentieth century, this is probably not an accurate analogy.  Art!

Absolutely accurate.  This 'wedge'-shaped excision into the fortification walls means that archers can move across 900 to shoot at their foe, but it's ridiculously difficult to hit that slit if you're firing back.  Art!

Roel is a bit scathing about the simplicity of the defensive works here, accusing the defenders of - er - sitting down and doing crosswords for five hundred years.  I think you should have tried harder, folks.  Art!

Or, as he suggests, include defensive works that allow all-round defence, so you can pick the enemy off at the base of your wall and prevent them from swarming up your rather pathetic defence.  Art!

Chaps, go hang your heads in shame.  IN SHAME!

Right, better go re-pimp the blog.  Tot Siens!

How Lucky We Are

To Be Living In The Future

I wish to mention the ending of "2010: The Year We Make Contact" because the narrator (Roy Scheider) explains that, at one point in recent human history, there was only one sun in the sky and nights were dark.  By 2085 the entire world population would be mystified by the concept of 'the night sky'.  Art!

I mention this because I have now sabotaged my intended primary illustration, you know, the sleazy cheesy one that baits people into visiting BOOJUM! and if Art will now put it up -

Do you see how hard people had it in the days before GPS and the internet?  Why, you had to have things like street atlases and maps and compasses, which were, of course - obviously! - completely beyond the grasp of females, leading to the title we see above.

Also, WASH OUT YOUR FILTHY MINDS!  The 'Rod' here could easily have been - Art!

핵 비상! (Hang Bisang!)

Okay, Okay, I Shall Translate

That's Korean for "Nuclear Emergency!" which you are, of course - obviously! - interpreting incorrectly.  No, it's not about The Only Fat Man In North Korea pressing the button and launching nukes at Seoul.  For one thing, Conrad strongly suspects that South Canada has a SLBM or SSGN submarine in international waters off the Korean peninsula, with orders to keep a weather eye on TOMFINK and his button-pressing activities.  Art!

Say hello to my little friend.  And his 144 cruise missiles.

No, today's title comes from a fascinating, not to say alarming, sideline on the BBC News website, written by Jean McKenzie, their Seoul Correspondent.

To put it succinctly, South Korea wants nuclear weapons.

Currently the nation is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, from which they can withdraw at any time, should they choose to do so.  It would seem that the Sorks tried to carry out a covert nuclear weapons program in the Seventies, which got shut down by the South Canadians: they offered the protection of their conventional and nuclear umbrella, which was a deal worth making at the time.  There are a couple of provisos to that agreement as of now.  Art!

DJ Sepia had a worryingly close relationship with TOFMINK , and also threatened to withdraw South Canadian forces from the peninsula.  Plus, the Nork missile program has developed over the past fifty years.

So the Sorks are aware that the South Canadian guarantee of support depends very much on who gets into the White House, and that Nork missiles have the potential (very theoretically!) to reach the American mainland.  That makes the guarantee of support even wobblier: risk San Francisco for Seoul?  Art!

Yes, that hilarious map of the peninsula.  It's a dramatic illustration of the difference in technology between the Norks and the Sorks.  So yes, the Norks do have a nuclear arsenal, BUT it's taken them over sixty years to acquire it, and the evidence that they even have effective fusion warheads is lacking.  Y'know, fusion warheads, the ones you can build as big as you like. Art!

This is the Wolseong nuclear power plant in South Korea, one of 25 such power plants.  The Norks have a single nuclear power plant at Yongbon, which doesn't generate any energy as it's only there to provide fissile material.  And it's nearly sixty years old, being constructed by the Sinister Union, so there won't be any technical back-up from there.  That's the kind of technological gap that exists between the two states, as wide as that night map shows.

So, the question 'Could the Sorks create nuclear weapons?' is less relevant than 'How long would it take the Sorks to create nuclear weapons?'  Art!

Israeli nukes.  What could possibly go wrong!

FYI, Israel began nuclear weapons research as soon as the country was established (1948) and they had basic fission bombs by 1967.  So, say about twenty years.  By 1985 they had fusion warheads.

During the early Seventies, Pakistan began it's own nuclear weapons program, starting in 1972.  Art!

They had fission warheads by 1988, so the cycle was down to sixteen years.

If the Sorks begin their nuclear weapons program right now and assuming that they, too, reduce the cycle by four years, then they could have fission warheads by 2035.  More likely the cycle would be reduced by more than four years as we're looking at technology fifty years on from Pakistan's.  These would be totally independent of external control, at which point China is going to start getting nervous, worrying about pre-emptive strikes and so on.  FOTMINK is going to lose weight thanks to his diet-by-stress.

Nuclear proliferation is never a good thing, but according to Ms. McKenzie, over three-quarters of the Sork population want nukes, so it may very well happen.

There's an old Scottish curse: "May you live in interesting times" and we certainly are.  Hang Bisang!

Sork cuisine, to end on a more positive note

Roll On The Roel!

Roel <Googles> Konijnendijk must have students queueing up for his lectures at Oxford, he comes across so engagingly in his 'Insider' Youtube presentations.  Today we look at his review of - Art!

Conrad has no idea what this one's about.  Romans versus European barbarians?  Ah no, Romans versus British barbarians.  Well, yes, we always bring a touch of class to any ruckus we get involved with.  Art!

Roel's not too happy with this formation, as it lacks any kind of depth and if a single soldier in the circle falls, that's it, game over.  The next scene shows a Roman 'Testudo' or 'Tortoise' formation, where the soldiers march in a unit, completely covered by their shields.  Art!

"Like a zombie horde" is his description of this attack, and he's not wrong.  Apparently the 'barbarian/zombie horde' stereotype goes all the way back to the Romans, and indeed the Greeks before them - it was they who came up with the word 'Barbarians' for anyone unfortunate enough to not be Greek.

Next up we have a chariot charge.  Art!

A la Roel, this scene conflates two different types of chariot.  In the upper picture these war-chariots would carry archers or spear-chuckers, who would be heavily armoured themselves, and who would operate at a distance from the enemy.  The lower picture shows a scythe-chariot, which sound great in the script, and look cool on a storyboard, but which rarely worked in real life.  Art!

Fair enough

A Bit Of A Fairy-Tale

As we all know, Conrad is no fan of the ballfoot game, but this one caught my eye a couple of weeks ago.  Wrexham have been out of the Football League for 15 years, which, I understand, means a lack of access to finances that is granted to members.  Art!

Club owners Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds celebrate

Well, now they're back in the FL, thanks to winning a play-off (stop me if I get too technical) against Boreham 3:1.  Predictably the fans were excited.  Art!

Wrexham have also been made famous by a documentary the two owners did for Disney +, "We Are Wrexham" so Conrad confidently predicts that sponsors are going to be lining up and throwing money at the club.  Nice to see the underdog on the winning side.

"The Sea Of Sand"

A revolution is underway on Wastelandworld, and everyone's favourite Gallifreyan is right in there mixing it up with the best of them.  A giant mass of water, one hundred and twenty thousand tons of it, has just appeared on the loyalist-held trans-mat platform.

Out into the sands beyond rolled the tidal wave, onto the glass moat, cooling and cracking it amidst gigantic clouds of steam.  Behind it, buildings collapsed under the weight of water, or when their foundations were washed away.

Those few scattered defenders who remained upright, and conscious, and aware, were then hit by stun rays and glass darts coming from the heavens, as forty three microlight gliders swooped in from the darkness and onto the trans-mat platform, arriving in a tumult of glass fragments and broken poles.  These airborne commandoes stormed the trans-mat controls (abandoned when the technicians there had been swept away) and various buildings across the complex.  From beyond the dunes, gradually getting closer, the sound of cheering, yelling Farmers could be heard as the besiegers broke from cover and joined in the capture of the complex.

Listening intently as he jogged closer, the Doctor couldn’t help grinning foolishly in delight that his plan had worked.  Recalling that bio-vores interpreted the humanoid grin as a threat, he reverted to a satisfied smirk.  The half dozen bio-vores jogging alongside him as an escort felt happier when that feral grimace vanished.

Thanks be to Sorbusa, reflected the Doctor.  If he hadn’t mentioned that the complex on Target Fourteen fell into the sea, matters would have been far more difficult.  The hang-gliders were a precaution, just in case the water got shut off too soon.  Four had crashed along the way after taking off from the highest point of Lord Sur’s castle, the penalty you paid for a primitive lighter than air craft with minimal crew training.

     Take that!

Finally -

Conrad has to be up early tomorrow, for then I begin 2 weeks training at Serco in Gomorrah-on-the-Irwell.  Assemble at 08:45 for a 09:00 start, which means getting up at 07:00 with my bag already packed and a lunch already arranged.  Thankfully the dress policy is smart casual, no need for a suit <hack> or tie <hack hack>.  It'll be a bit strange, after two and a half months of getting up whenever I felt like it.  O well.
