Let The Grain Train Take The Strain!

Forgive Me For Rhyming

It just comes naturally to me.  Why, last week I even came up with a tasteless little doggerel about the Ruffian Black Sea Fleet, which I didn't write down and which is now lost to history.  Probably only temporarily, I think it had "Sea Baby" and "Navy" in there somewhere.

ANYWAY whilst on that particular theme, I have only recently been watching a long and verrrry interesting video on Youtube from "Inside Russia", which is the brainchild of Konstantin Samoilov.  We've mentioned his channel and dealt with a few of the catastrophic analyses he generates.  Art!

Konstantin's new pad.  Not literally; he moved to Tashkent in Uzbekistan or he'd have either been conscripted or imprisoned back home in Soviet Union 2.0.

What he's been looking at in his latest livestream are 4 or 5 potential 'bottlenecks' that appear to indicate just how parlous the Ruffian economy, industry and infrastructure are.  As you'd expect, oil and aircraft are on the list, as are a couple of other items that don't get much attention in the headlines, so Conrad thought he'd lead with them.  After all, a jet airliner is a lot sexier than a humble train.  Art!

As Big K pointed out, Ruffia has a very large rail network, established in the bad old days of the Sinister Union.  A train ticket used to be the first resort if it wasn't possible to fly anywhere, as Ruffians preferred flying due to the slowness of trains and the speed of planes.  Art!

However, when it comes to air travel - and that word 'however' ought to be in flashing neon letters six feet tall today - the 'khokhols' have caused southern airports in russia to be closed, such as Simferopol and Krasnodar.  Drones and Patriots, doncha know, and the Ruffians don't have enough tyres.

So!  Ruffian trains are now overbooked and much more expensive than they used to be.  There are also a lot less of them than there used to be.

"O why is this, snowy-haired scribe?" I hear you query.  O I thought you'd never ask!

Because, gentle reader, Ruffian trains don't use Ruffian engines.  No.  They, instead, use engines from the Teuton engineering company Siemens.

You can probably see where this is going, because the Teutons may baulk at giving Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, but they've been shot-hot at imposing and adhering to sanctions.  They ended 170 years of involvement with Ruffia when the Special Idiotic Operation took place.  Art!

Definitely Siemens and maybe even a train engine

The Ruffians loved loved loved Siemens because they built quality engines, embodying that Teuton stereotype of thoroughness.  When they left, so did all the servicing, maintenance, repairs and spare parts.  The end, as Big K pointed out, of over 170 years of involvement in Ruffian engineering.  Now, after two years of neglect, locomotives are breaking down.  Whilst the Teutons may not be giving Ukraine Taurus cruise missiles, they are shot-hot on imposing and adhering to sanctions, hence these train troubles.  The Ruffians, as they did with airplanes, are now cannibalising - NO! they are not eating themselves.  Not yet, anyway.  What I meant is that they are now stripping one set of trains of parts, so they can keep the rest rolling.  This, mind you, is a short-term fix that can't go on, as you can only eat so many trains.  Art!

You may be thinking, O what about Ruffia's very bestest pal in all the world, China?  Surely they'll be leaping to the rescue with scads of -

NO!  There are no Chinese prime movers travelling west.

You may also be thinking, what about Ruffia building it's own trains?

They tried that.  See that broken-down train above?  That's the 'Finist', a wholly-home made Ruffian train, which broke down only SIX DAYS into service.

Last year BOOJUM! covered the troubles Ruffia was having with rolling stock - which is all the stuff that's not locomotives - and how a significant percentage was breaking down, thanks to ball-bearing shortages, as the sole plant that made them was Swedish and had left Ruffia.  Now it's the prime movers themselves that are rolling over and dying.  Art!

Big K also identified another bottleneck that I don't really have time to do justice to here - I've just had to re-type out about 200 words that vanished for no reason - so I'll just mention that seed imports is another bottleneck-cum-Achilles heel for Ruffia.  More on that later.  Art!

That's Konstantin with his cup of English Breakfast Tea.  He needed it, poor chap, he had a constant cough during the livestream.

Going "Commando"

NO!  This is nothing about underwear, you fearful perverts.  Your minds need a full cycle on high temperature.

What I refer to is that British staple, the "Commando" comic, if that's quite what it is.  Art!

They were exclusively set in the First or Second Unpleasantness, in all modes and on all fronts.  The cover you see above is unusual, as they normally focussed firmly on Allied soldiers.  If Conrad remembers correctly, it's poached from a photograph of Teuton soldiers fighting from the cover of a crater.  Art!

Not the right one.  Soz.

Of course - obviously! - I cannot find the photo.  It might be in one of my reference volumes, which I cannot be bothered to dig out.

ANYWAY I was minded of one particular story, which was utterly bonkers.  Conrad can clearly recall the artwork, but not the artist's name.  The story was set during the Battle Of Britain, when a particularly inept pilot was last seen ascending heavenwards in his shot-to-bits Spit.  Art!

Like this, but full of holes

Later on he returns to the airfield in perfect nick, as is his Spitfire.  From then on he becomes a veritable demon in the air, the complete opposite of what he used to be, in addition to talking 'like a maiden aunt' as I remember the speech bubble comment.  The story ends when, after a mighty battle in the air, his shot-to-bits Spit is found, without him.  Except all his harness and flying kit is still in the cockpit, as if he just vanished into thin air, naked.  Art!

The explanation OF COURSE - obviously! - as worked out by his mate is that, on his last doomed flight, he encountered a UFO.  The alien crew decided to help the RAF without being directly involved - the Prime Directive, doncha know - and so reanimated the dying pilot with one of their own.  Aliens.  It's the only explanation that makes sense.

I should point out that "Commando" has been going for 53 years, so it's doing something right.

"Definitely aliens, Conrad"

     Blimey, nearly at count already!

There Were These Four Poles And A Ton Of Lego

No, it's not a joke.  Especially if you tread on any of them in bare feet <winces>.  To what am I referring?  The team who created the 1/7th scale Air Force One in Lego, that's whom.  Art!

That above was accompanied by a breathless Polish voice-over that I couldn't understand a word of.  Not being Polish.  Art!

Conrad is guessing that the  caption above is Polish for "ONE MILLION PIECES!".  Art!

Yes, those are the culprits responsible.

NO THEY ARE NOT RUSSIAN!  Sheesh.  The Poles are a polite people but asking this question is not going to win friends in Krakow.

@sir_paniccakettv1263
Wait is this Russian or an other language

"City In The Sky"

The Doctor's airstrike from Heaven has just arrived in the skies above the Great Australian Bight.

‘It’s going to hit the beach,’ stuttered Denny, stumbling backwards.

‘Citizens of New Eucla, meet my flyswatter,’ announced the Doctor with a combination of pride and vengeance, resting his fingertips against each other.  ‘Don’t worry, it’s going to hit well out in the Bight.  You can’t judge distances very well by just looking, Denny.’  He added a stage-whispered coda.  ‘Thank you Starmen.’

The flaming missile took forever to fall to a point where the trees and hillocks along the beach hid it from sight, which made Mike realise that the thing really was far off, fifty kilometres at least.  Ages later a giant muddy grey mushroom cloud humped up into the sky, towering up and up and up until weather patterns began to tear and shred it apart.  Seconds later they heard and felt a shockwave that vibrated in the very earth itself, making buildings rattle, chimney’s fall down and window panes unseat.  Amidst the tinkle of breaking glass the townsfolk looked in wonder and awe at each other.

‘What – Doctor, what was that!’ gasped Mike.  ‘A meteor?’

‘One of the Trojan asteroids, dislodged from orbit by the Starmen.  I gave them the approximate co-ordinates to hit so the tsunami generated won’t destroy your townships along the coast. Expect big waves very soon.’

For a small bloke he does make big waves, don't he?

Just To Kick It While It's Down

As you may be dimly aware, as we haven't rubbished it for a while, BOOJUM! looks on crypto-currency with a narrowed and jaundiced eye (the other one is steeping in a cup of antinomy hydroxyl).  Art!

I'M SHOCKED!  SHOCKED I TELL YOU!  How - how can this be?  The words "Crypto-currency" and "scam" in the same sentence together?

Crypto-currency: the scamble of choice for money-launderers!

Finally -

The weather has picked up and is considerably brighter than yesterday's troglodytic day, where it was darker than the inside of a coalsack at noon.  Very cold, mind, which is great.  Stops me falling asleep over my works laptop.

IIABDFI Reprised

Thank You Pink Floyd

There I was, stonewalled in my attempts to think up a theme for this Intro, having a quick look at Twitter, Youtube, Quora and others to see if there was any particular item that could be an intellectual coat-hanger, from which to dangle all my creative efforts.

Hmmmm.  Nope.  The only inspiration came from Edna, whimpering with greed to get at my empty porridge bowl and the toast crumbs.

     But what's this!  Art?

Why, only one of the most iconic album covers in history.  "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd.  I shudder to think that this seminal album (as we called it back in the day) is over fifty years old this year.

ANYWAY There is a track on the album titled "Breathe".  Fair enough, everyone's got to do it.  Then another song, and then - what's this?  "Breathe Reprise".  Art!

<Hoiks out "Collins Concise Dictionary"> "Music: the repeating of an earlier refrain".

So, here we are today with another tale - hence the 'Reprise' motif - of "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It", which you might translate into "Our Management Are Too Cheap To Invest Or Update Which Will Surely Bite Them On The Bottom Most Severely In The Near To Medium Term".  You can see why I used the pithier version.

So, Original Poster worked at a call centre in Belfast, this being one of the outreach locations of a gigantic South Canadian operation, which had two other large locations in This Sceptred Isle, totalling over 2,000 employees.  Art!

An example of a Belfast call centre

The thing is, the old South Canadian ethos of not spending money if it can possibly be avoided permeated the business, so they refused to buy in proper time-management software that would allow OP to do his job.

     For three years.

Then, one bright and dewy morning - poetic licence, it could have been dark and stormy for all I know - a new director arrived.  He appeared to take notice of OP and his Excel work-around for leave management.  He appeared also to take notice of OP's not-inconsiderable salary, for our protagonist had worked his way up thanks to diligence and skill over the previous 8 years.

"Create us a training manual, forsooth, Origie Postie, and we will move you on to more verdant pastures!" they lied.  Art!

Green fields indeed

OP did so, at which point they fired him (although with a nice severance package).  The work was promptly outsourced to the Phillipines and South Africa, as their two teams combined cost less than OP.

Please note this is NOT fixing anything, it's merely kicking the can down the road.

OP warned that doing this was a verrrrrrry bad idea, which New Idiot Director sneered at.  Perhaps he had a moustache that he also tweaked?

You can guess where this is going.  A month later Origie Postie found out that the improvised leave tracker had crashed, because the numpties abroad weren't doing back ups and had in fact deleted the entire leave archive 'to make more space'.

     Ooops.

This meant 2,315 staff had to be given ALL their annual leave again, because there was absolutely no record of who had taken what.  The UK, you see; employees have rights, no matter what South Canadian manglement think.  Art!

New Idiot Director was fired within weeks for costing the business millions.  OP had the satisfaction of being able to ring him - doubtless enabled by vindictive staff members still working there - and say "I told you so".  NID had no witty comeback or even the wit to swear and just hung up.

Stormy!

No, this is not about the bane of Ruffian ammunition depots, headquarters, ships and submarines.  Nor is it anything to do with Pumpkinhead's hush-hush money recipient, whom has an unattractive nose anyway, ev

ANYWAY if you've seen as many South Canadian films as Your Modest Artisan, then you will have seen the Los Angeles storm drains, some of which are actually the canalised Los Angeles River.  Art!

That last is "Them", the last part of which takes place inside the storm drains, or sets representing them, as most films only dare venture into the external riverine systems.

Why mention this?  Well, California is getting one of those occasional storms that explains why they have this extensive and massive drainage system in the first place, because it's not all sunshine in the Sunshine State.  Art!

That's the LA River in spate, and that character is dicing with either being drowned or battered to bits by water-borne debris, because they're on a  WET SLOPING SURFACE IN HIGH WINDS.  What could possibly go wrong?  Art!

The normally placid LA River

I Beg Your Pardon

I never promised you any kind of garden, let alone one with exotic flowers in it.   No!  What I meant was that I used a photograph in yesteryon's Intro, without giving any information about it, which is a shameful omission.  Art!

This is a still from "The Incredible Melting Man", which - well, if you've read the title you know the plot.  The supposed window-dressing is that he's the sole survivor of a manned mission to Saturn, his other two crewmen being killed stone dead by the radiation that is causing him to melt like ice cream in the sun.

He runs amok, kills people and then falls apart completely, being ignominiously swept up into a bucket at the film's end.  Art!

Shortly pre-bucket

Conrad hasn't seen it and isn't pining to, as it seems more an exercise in special effects than anything else.  But knock yourself out if interested.

Methinks they also vastly underestimate the difficulties of a manned mission to Saturn - but I could be overthinking this .....

"City In The Sky"

We've rather gone from a city in the sky to a township on the land, one where a pregnant pause is stretching out.  The Doctor is expecting news from the heavens, he's just not telling anyone quite what it will be.

‘Let me guess,’ interrupted Mike.  ‘These things hate water.  So they’ll run a mile if they get hosed.’

‘Broadly correct,’ beamed the Doctor, rattling lemon slices together at the bottom of his empty jug.  Again, his attention wandered to the south.

‘You expecting them Starmen to come to the rescue?’ asked Denny.  He was Lenny’s younger brother, and just as acidly observant as the elder man, who had reluctantly been sent off with the refugees.  ‘Huh!  As if!  They never bothered before, did they?’

For a long pause the five citizens discussed how the Starmen had never helped anyone on Earth before in an argument that went around in a circle.

When the bickering had wound down, Mike started to direct them to different points of the deserted township.  The Doctor had indicated that they needed to stay under cover wherever possible and that, whilst they weren’t and couldn’t be exactly safe, they stood a far better chance of surviving than the unfortunate citizens of Forrest for reasons of –

‘What the hell is that!’ interrupted Glynn, pointing over Mike’s shoulder to the skies beyond the shore.  Everyone turned to look at a blazing fireball bigger than the Moon, an incendiary apparition that spat and shed violent streamers in it’s wake, leaving a trail of smoke leading back into the heavens.  A dull booming came distantly to them, echoing in between the silent streets of the empty town.

     Ah.  Now we know.

The Ears May Be Old But The Brain Is Still Gold

Conrad's shelves have been graced with "Doctor Strange" for a great many months, because there's always been another task to perform before allowing myself anything as frivolous as watching a film.  Plotting World Domination just eats up your leisure time.  Art!

Hmmm not sure about the cape

It takes a while to get going, and whilst establishing it's mise en scene, at one point you have the not-very-humble doctor roaring around the streets of Whereverville in a sports car.  Art!

A car

The car's not the issue.  No, Conrad's ears pricked up when he heard the background music, for was it not the Syd Barrett iteration of Pink Floyd, playing "Interstellar Overdrive"?  Well, yes, it was.  Splendid recognition there, Conrad, as it must be at least five ten years since I last heard it.  It's Syd being flashy on guitar and exhibiting his sense of whimsy in spades.  They only played a snippet because it's a looooong track.

Yes!  The Mystery Macguffins Are Back!

"The Daily Beast"'s rotating adverts have come back to one of those collections of cheap tat as retailed by Temu.  Art!

The trainer is pretty obviously a trainer.  Item2 seems to be an un-necessarily fancy torch.  But Item's 1 and 4?  Who knows.  Art!

I think this gadget is to do with bicycles and gears, which seems reasonable.  Art!

Aha!  I see the theme here - bicycles!  That torch with pretentions must be for attachment to handlebars.  Art!

The old dog still has a bit of a bite, hmmmm?

Finally -

O corks we are due to have a remote staff meeting today!  Not had one for weeks now, and people are expecting Conrad to come up with an entertaining and amusing anecdote or two.

SO! I have decided to regale people with the tale of the Minifigs-scale Lego Death Star.  That ought to inform folks.

More Money Mayhem!

Mazeltov!

Conrad is unsure exactly what this means, but it begins with an "M" so that's sufficient.

Yes, we begin this Intro with another look at a South Canadian plagued by indictments, money woes, defamations and miscellaneous money miseries.  I know what and who you're thinking and you're WRONG.  Make no mistake, Conrad could fill the blog with nothing but the woes of Pumpkinhead and do it twice daily, except that would get boring.  No, the person in question is - Art!

What on Earth?

Art, have you been at the charcoal briquettes again?  You know they give you gastro-cerebral conniptions!  Try again.

<sounds of heavy-duty Tazer charging up>

"I'm melting!  I'm melting!"

Finally!  For Lo! we are indeed going to point and laugh at Rudy Giuliani, who deserves it.  Rudy, you may recall, fronted most of the 60 attempts to challenge Pimpkinhead's loss of the 2020 election, loudly declaring outside various courts that he was going to crack the fraud wide open, that there'd never been so much evidence, that not only the Kraken but the Minotaur, Hippogriff and Bubbles The Tap-Dancing Elephant were going to be released.

Once in court, because you have to actually adhere to facts, evidence and proof, the claims became how heavy rain in the Sanjak Of Novi Pazar would impact the pistachio harvest, or that there was only one space between the full stop and capital letter in 27 sentences of -

You get the idea.  All 60 cases were dismissed.  This is important later, so make a note.  Art!

Next up in Rudy's monetary woes was his defamation case against Ruby Freeman and Shay Moss.  Not only did he get taken to court for this massive life-threatening slander, he continued to do so WHILST ON TRIAL FOR IT.  Sheesh.  You wouldn't think that this chump is a lawyer, would you?  Well, the bottom line for him is that he is now $148 million the poorer for it, which enormous judgement you might think would persuade another notorious pie-hole flapper to shut up*.

This is merely the latest in a series of financial troubles Rudy has found himself in.  He is currently on the hook for $500,000 in unpaid taxes, which means the bloodhound-leech hybrids of the Internal Revenue Service will be on his bottom forever, or until he pays, whichever comes first.  Art!

When it comes to the IRS and it's agents, Conrad is minded of a line from that seminal sci-fi film, "The Terminator"

Listen, and understand! That IRS is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are taxed!

     To paraphrase a little <sniggers>.

Of course - obviously! - that's not all.  Rudy has apparently been taking lessons from his erstwhile morbidly obese friend - who has now downgraded him merely to an 'acquaintance' - in not paying his legal team.  Thus, as he might have expected, you know, being a lawyer himself, they are suing him.

For $1,360,000.  Wow.  You HAVE been a naughty boy, haven't you, Rudy?  Art!

The Satsumaman put on a $100,000 per place 'fund-raiser' for Rudy, probably because the latter knows where the bodies are buried, in an attempt to raise millions.  Hmmm.  They raised $300,000.  So Rudy has 3 wealthy friends in the world.  Not much he can look forward to there.  Art!

Georgia State Penitentiary

Mind you, Ol' Rudy might not need to go looking for food or accommodation in a year's time, as there is a very real chance he will be serving hard time in prison thanks to being convicted in the Georgia RICO trial looming in the future.

You never know, he might write a best-selling tell-all about his turbulent times, except all the profits would be garnished for his lawyers and the IRS and Moss and Freeman.  So, he may not bother.

Bring on the buckets of popcorn!

More Magnificent Monies

Yesterday we were giving "The Marvels" the usual financial kick in the teeth it deserves, making "John Carter" look almost successful in comparison.  Well, you are probably unaware of a film franchise from the early into mid-2000s, which was insanely successful.  I can't capture data from "Box Office Mojo" without the graphics taking over the entire page, so I'll just copy them from an old blog post.

Here are some figures from an old blog post:

Title                                               Cost                               Box Office

Alvin and the Chipmunks                  $60 million                      $360 million
Alvin 2                                             $75 million                      $443 million
Alvin 3                                             $75 million                      $342 million
Alvin 4                                             $90 million                      $234 million

Thus these wretched things have made $1,379 billion in total, at the box office alone, without taking merchandising, DVD release or television rights.  They've probably hit one and a half billion by now.  Given that the last one was in 2015, we're probably due another one soon, because nothing succeeds like a great return at the box office.  Then there's Jason Lee, who has - I hope! - made a great deal of money from these films.

In fact there hasn't been another Chipmunk film, perhaps due to the law of diminishing returns, perhaps because Jason got too embarrassed.

Bear in mind these are the most successful live-action/animated films ever made.

"The War Illustrated"

As you may have noticed, there has been an emphasis on D-Day and post-landing events in the pictures I've chosen, meaning that the Allies weren't quite admitting that Normandy wasn't a feint any longer, and there must have been a dawning sense of "O Excrement" amongst the higher Teuton commands.  Art!

These are gliders bringing in air-landing troops into Normandy; you can see landed gliders (probably Horsas) to centre port, and other gliders casting off from their bomber tugs.  The thing about gliders was that they landed your troops exactly on target, rather than having them scattered all over the place by vagaries of wind or transport tugs.  Plus, you could pack bigger stuff like jeeps or anti-tank guns in gliders.  There was a fine line between being robust enough to transport twenty men, and being sufficiently flimsy to not waste material in a disposable airframe that wouldn't be used more than once in the real thing.

"City In The Sky"

A band of gallant volunteers, including the Doctor, are camping out in a now-deserted New Eucla, waiting for the black hats to show up.

Mike kept his own counsel.  The little man had liberated a set of kitchen knives and then dug out a battered aluminium wok from The Sanctuary’s darkest kitchen recesses with an expression of genuine glee, only bettered when he discovered a few gold coins in the building’s safe.  Somehow he’d opened the safe with what looked like a child’s toy, except no child’s toy created a vibration that rattled ones teeth and bowels simultaneously.  Then he’d dragged Billy Barakan off to the forge with both wok and coins to work mischief with both.  Billy came back ten minutes later with the nozzle for their fire-engine’s hose, treated in the furnace until it turned cherry red and then worked with hammer and file.  It still plugged back into the hose.

‘Gives you more range,’ was the only explanation they got.

And all the time, every few minutes, the small stranger looked to the skies over the Bight.  He wouldn’t explain his preoccupation to anyone.

‘Late,’ he muttered within earshot of Mike after finishing off the lemonade.

Glynn, another weather-beaten outsider more used to long, lonely days riding the highway as a courier, wanted an explanation as to why they’d dragged the fire-engine into mid-street and left it there, concealed by no more than a tarpaulin.

Gosh, what on earth could he be expecting to come via air mail?

Colour Conrad Confused

I have heard of Taylor Swift, but haven't heard any of his music.

Only joking!  No, I understand that she's a big cheese in contemporary pop music, which you might think would earn her a sneer of cold contempt - I'm really good at cold contempt sneers - from Conrad, WHO STILL HATES ALL MUSICALS.  Yet no.  I am being unusually accepting of her.  Art!

Partly out of sheer mischief.  Because, for reasons utterly unfathomable to Your Humble Scribe, she appears to send the South Canadian Wizard Lizard Gizard political party into frothing coils of venomous hatred.  I mean, if she was a grungy death-metal rocker who burned the South Canadian flag to keep warm in winter, one could understand it, but - the gel is a mere slip of a thing, unquestionably pretty and not promoting riotous assembly.

At times, one is glad there is an ocean keeping us apart.

Finally -

That's all, pilgrims!

If I Were To Say "Invincible!"

Then You Could Be Forgiven For Being Mistaken

For it is perfectly reasonable to think I refer to Robert Kirkman's comics character, as I've whanged on about him enough, and have all 22 issues of "Invincible".  There is also an animated series, which is on Amazon, so I've never seen it.  Conrad wonders if it's quite as violent as the comics themselves, which regularly featured explosive gore.  Art!

The comics, as I've mentioned before, start off as quite light and frothy, before becoming rather darker, and more space-opera is included.  There are a fair few volumes set in the same universe, such as "Best Tiger", a chap so handy with guns that he deliberately blindfolds himself to make things more challenging.  Art!

Then there's "Rex Plode", who can - you may be ahead of me here - make things explode.  Bit of a minor character, he was lucky to get his own stand-alone volume.  He w

ANYWAY by now you must realise that we're not talking about Mark Greyson - Invincible's normal persona - but rather about -

     AIRCRAFT CARRIERS!

What, you were expecting a Superman parody?  Not at all.  Art!

There you go, 'HMS Invincible' to starboard.  Note her tonnage and overall length compared to the other vessels.  This is because she was designed initially as a cruiser, a design later modified to be a 'light' aircraft carrier, as if anything that weighs as much as twenty-three thousand elephants can be blessed with that moniker.  The Invincible and her sister ship the 'Illustrious' took part in the Falklands War back in 1982, and the war in Bosnia in 1994, and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, before the grand old lady was broken up in 2011.

Still, what you might call a full life for a vessel.

I shan't bother with the 'De Gaulle' - only joking!  It's the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier beyond the South Canadian Navy, and has been on operations in the Indian Ocean in support of actions in Afghanistan, in the Med during the Libyan uprising against Gadaffi and against ISIS in Iraq in 2015.  Art!

Prickly as a porcupine

Here an aside.  There wasn't much in this world that Deggy was fond of.  The exception was his wife, Yvonne.  She was present in his official Citroen when it was shot up in 1962 by OAS assassins, who remarkably managed to miss everyone in the convoy despite firing 187 shots.  The actual shooters were granted clemency, but Deggy refused point blank to grant mercy to the planner and plotter in charge, one Jean Bastien Thiry.  He was executed by firing squad.  Deggy was quite used to being shot at, having been a soldier, but he absolutely would not tolerate anyone putting his wife at risk.

ANYWAY we shall skip lightly to the 'USS Nimitz', a broth of a beast almost three times the tonnage of the humble Invincible.  This is a slightly unfair comparison as the Nimitz is one of the biggest warships in the world, which has had about fifteen deployments overseas since the mid-Seventies, and is due to retire next year.  Art!

They might also have added "Featuring the USS Nimitz", because the film was shot aboard the carrier.  So she's a film star!

And then we have the 'Admiral Kuznetsov', occluded by a gigantic cloud of tarry black smoke, as she is in real life.  Or, I should say, 'was'.  This floating joke was commissioned in 1985, and has had exactly one operational combat deployment, to the Syrian coastline in the Med.  Her pilots were so poorly-trained that they've crashed three aircraft into the ocean.  There have been numerous fires aboard the AK, resulting in deaths, but the Ruffians are too cagey to admit how many.  It has been in dry dock for the past 6 years because there aren't the funds to renovate it, as most of them were embezzled.  Her propellers were removed to allow her into a floating dock, which promptly sank, meaning that there's no way to get the propellers back on unless she is towed all the way to Vladivostok.  The Ruffian navy doesn't want to do this because the nasty mean Royal Navy will point and laugh.  Art!

That's the AK burning 'mazut', an incredibly crude fuel that gives off a smoke signal visible beyond the horizon.  It's cheap, so that's why, in case you were wondering.  The AK's return to service is always a year off; in 2023 it was going to be 2024.  Now that it's 2024, expect it to roll around to 2025.  It is certainly not Invincible and even less Invisible, and if a cruel UK film studio were to make a documentary about it, they would Inevitably call it "Carrier On!".

The Number One Brick Build

Thank you to SpitBrix for creating the list of 20, some of which I've omitted because I found them dull or repetitive.  What is Number One?  Do you know, I can't remember, it's been weeks since I played the video.  Art!

O yes.  This is the first Lego robot to solve a 9 x 9 x 9 Rubik's Cube, and is called the Multicuber 999.  It can solve a cube in under 35 minutes, which Conrad finds impressive as he could never be bothered with them, finding them much too hard, and they tend to come apart when you throw them against a wall.  This machine uses a smartphone for colour recognition and THE BLIND FOOLS DON'T THEY KNOW THIS IS THE WAY TO SKYNET! plotting a solution.

Further To "John Carter"

Conrad has seen and enjoyed this film for what it is, unpretentious entertainment.  At the time when released in 2012, it was one of the most expensive films ever made, coming in at $250 million in production costs.  Add in another $100 for promotion and advertising - not distribution, it was a Disney film and they have their own distribution network - and you're looking at $350 million.  Art!

Globally it only made $284 million, so, working on the studios getting (an exceedingly generous 50% of the box office) their cut, it only got back $142 million.  So it lost about $200 million.  On the other hand, it did have the biggest opening day ever in Ruffia.

BUT! It used to be rated as one of the biggest ever box office bombs.  Who's that saying 'Hold my beer'?

That global box office means it - whatever 'it' is - only made back $97.5 million back for the studio.  Before I reveal the answer, the overall budget with P & A was likely $400 million, so they may have lost $300 million.  Art!

We won't know the true state of TM's budget until their UK tax returns are filed.

So!  John Carter, you can hold your head up high again!

"City In The Sky"

The plot is thickening and things are astir, to push the cooking analogy a bit too much.

Two miles distant, invisible to anyone bar those able to see into the far ultra-violet, the Lithoi’s two spare flying eyes stood on the ground east of Forrest, waiting for the escapee to arrive.

Staying behind and acting as a rearguard in New Eucla would be dangerous.  The six volunteers knew this before being warned by Doctor Smith about what they faced: a flying craft that mounted very high-powered infra-red beam weapons, able to destroy the whole township in minutes.

Since the township had been emptied of people, the aliens might very well choose to pursue them, either across the ocean or once they reached land, and there would be an unholy slaughter if that happened.

‘Your job is to buy time,’ explained the Timelord, sipping a lemonade outside The Sanctuary, having helped himself to a jugful in the larder.

‘And die trying?’ growled Brogan, a leathery brown livestock farmer cradling a shotgun.

‘No.  Please try not to get killed,’ replied the Doctor, managing to sound flippant whilst looking with a deadly intensity at Brogan, who could only hold the gaze for a second before flinching.  ‘I said buy time, not die in a gloriously useless fashion.’

     You tell 'em, Doc!

How Serendipitous

Conrad was perusing the pages of "The Daily Beast", only to find that all the MacGuffins were readily recognisable today <sad face>.  Art!

There was an interesting brief article from one Tristan Snell, who was responsible for successfully prosecuting Pumpkinhead and his fake "Trump University", to the tune of $25 million being paid back to ripped-off punters.  This was one of the infrequent times Donald Buck had been held accountable and punished, which loss he probably tells himself he 'won bigly'.  There was an apt line -

Prior to Trump University, he did indeed seem invincible.

Which is where we came in.  Toodles!

The View From My Sekrit Layr

Is Rather Grey And Dull

Yet it's not nightfall yet.  Dusk, perhaps, it being a little difficult to tell thanks to the 10/10s cloud cover.  Your Humble Scribe has noticed that around February the nights shrink noticeably, which is great for anyone who likes daylight and the sun (when we here in This Sceptred Isle get any).

I suppose I need to wheel in a click-baity picture in order to tempt the masses.  Art!

"Lauren experienced the horrors of an amateur head-massager"

No, I don't know if this depicts one of the two cover stories, "Arsenic and Mrs Gilligan" or "Bonnie Lou's Blind Date", though on balance one would suspect the latter.  Call me a pessimist, but I don't think there's going to be a second date.  Well, on with the links.
