It Was Wetter, Then It Got Better

I Am Talking About That Perennial British Talking-Point, The Weather

When I went for my afternoon constitutional into Lesser Sodom today, there was a touch of 'Scotch Mist' in the air, that very fine rain which is still entirely wet.  By the time I reached the fleshpots of Royton, the rain had ceased altogether.  It's now brightening up and there is a danger it might get sunny enough for Small Domesticated Wolf to need a trot.  We shall see.  Art!

Conrad knows the answer to this: it was the lowly and humble Sturmgeschutz, or Assault Gun, which was an obsolete tank with the turret taken off and a fixed barbette used instead, mounting a larger gun than originally used.  Much cheaper to produce than a tank, and with a lower profile, they were jolly effective.  See 'Carentan' from 'Band Of Brothers' for an absolutely spot-on replica of one in action.

ANYWAY let's get on with the links, because there is every danger of this turning into a proper full-length post.

When The Title LIES!

I Know, I Know

Conrad has absolutely no room to talk given how deceptive, deceitful and damnably duplicitous the titles for BOOJUM! can be, but once again, whose blog is it?

Well, there I was, idly scrolling through various television series on Prime, wondering if I should watch any, when I came across an old acquaintance.  Art!

Nothing to do with budget Spartans

Your Modest Artisan remembers watching the first series many years ago, so long ago in fact that I suspect it might have been a coughpiratedcough version, back when 'The Pirate Bay' was a going concern.  So long ago that all I remembered was someone getting impaled by a spear.

Somewhat to my surprise, it ran for 7 seasons, which is a pretty respectable run, starting in 2014 and ending in 2020.

Now to the plot.  We pick up the story 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse killed off the entire planet-based human population, leaving only those aloft in 12 space stations to survive.  They managed to cobble together 'The Ark', a single composite from the dozen precursors, and if Art will put down his bowl of coal -

It's a big beast, and the camera rides through the spinning superstructure - simulated gravity thanks to centripetal force, no fantasy about anti-gravity here, the hard science is pretty hard - you get a sense of how big it is.  Art!

The narrative voice-over info-dumps that it's believed the Earth will take another 100 years to fully recover, so another 4 generations will have to endure life on the Ark -

Except not.  That would be too simple, wouldn't it?  You see, this cobbled-together antique has begun to fail in ways that would take so long to redress that everyone would be dead in 6 months.

     Ooops.

This did strike me as suspiciously similar to a 'Doctor Who' fanfic I wrote, namely 'City In The Sky' and I wondered who influenced whom.  Art!

CITY IN THE SKY  by ComsatAngel reviews

12,000 human survivors aboard Arcology One are stuck in orbit: the Great Northern War destroyed all means of ever getting back to Earth. Their sphere is wearing out, time is short, and a hostile agency is loose on the planet below. Enter the 7th Doctor!
Doctor Who - Rated: T - English - Sci-Fi/Adventure - Chapters: 35 - Words: 104,489 - Reviews: 9 - Favs: 12 - Follows: 2 - Updated: Oct 11, 2010 - Published: Oct 9, 2010 - 7th Doctor, Dorothy M./Ace - Complete

Well, that Oct 11 2010 gets me off the hook.  At no point in the 3 episodes I've watched to date is any total mentioned for the Ark's population, so I'm guesstimating that it, too, runs into the thousands.  Art!

This is the Juvenile Detention Facility, where criminals under 18 are incarcerated.  If you commit a crime - any crime - aboard the Ark, and you're over 18, then it's an automatic death sentence.  Less Than Zero Tolerance, you might say.

You may be able to join the dots here: the Ark is running on borrowed time, there are expendable juveniles in detention using up scarce air and water, Planet Earth is deserted and uninhabitable.

     Or is it?

Well, here's where the title comes in.  100 juvenile criminals are going to be sent on a one-way trip to the planet's surface, as guinea pigs, or canaries, to see if is is habitable or not.  Art!

That's the one-way shuttle being launched, compared to the mass of the Ark in the second shot - and there are 100 people aboard that shuttle.  Young people, who take up less room than an adult, but still 100 of them.

The 'LIES!' about the title kicks in at the 8 minute mark, when the drogue parachutes open abruptly, killing two teenagers who were goofing off and not buckled up.  We are now already at 98, title.  Art!

This is a subtle nod to the cobbled-together nature of the Ark and it's artefacts - 3 different parachutes, one of which fails totally.  Another ooops moment.  Art!

By an Amazing Coincidence Created By The Scriptwriter, this parachute failure also causes all comms to be disabled, so when the 98 land they are on their own.  Bar their electronic wristbands.  More credibly, it also causes them to land waaaaay off target, a good 15 miles from their drop zone, Mount Weather.  Art!

When they exit their now expensively-engineered shed, this is the greenery they find, surprise!

Couldn't they have seen this from orbit?  I mean, binoculars and telescopes exist.  They were able to send down a shuttle large enough to carry 100 people, is it beyond them to put together a probe or two?  Wouldn't they be able to see herds of animals?  Migrating birds?  Shoals of fish?  Don't forget, there are no humans to predate anything, or so they believe.  It does make for a splendid contrast with the sterile high-tec environment of the Ark, though.

Of course, I could be over-thinking this -

Hacking And Backing

Yes, I'm looking at you, Aeroflop.  Not changing a password for 3 years?  Allowing your data backups to be copied by hackers before being completely deleted?  Using a system that was outdated a decade ago?

     Tut tut.

I have just read a cautionary tale on Youtube's 'Pro-Revenge' pages where a teen pupil was as thorough as the Silent Crow team.  Art!

Crowing, silently

There was a long preamble about how Teen Hacker In College, hereafter THIC, had an intense rivalry with Teen Untouchable Because Entitled, hereafter TUBE, whose mother was a teacher at the school, and whom broke rules to ensure her little darling got away with all sorts of academic abuse.  THIC went to the Principal, who justified his position, title, salary and behaviour by doing exactly nothing.

THIC became incensed at this refusal to act, and using their computer skills, hacked into the school's database, which had been done on the cheap by a parent.  There were no passwords at all, never mind ones three years old, because - done on the cheap by a parent.  There were no backups of any information, because - done on the cheap by a parent.  There were no physical yearbooks that held prior information because Principal Purse-strings Pulled Tight.

All pupil information abruptly vanished, deleted permanently with nothing recoverable, thanks to THIC.

Surprise!  The school database automatically by default awarded 100% grades to anyone with no data entered, which was everyone.

The Principal was fired.  This was in South Canada, so that was all, no danger of falling out of a sixth-floor window.  If he'd had any principles he might have remained employed.

We Haven't Castigated Mordorvia Enough Just Yet

For many months prior to August, Ukraine has avoided targeting Ruffian oil refineries and depots, lest it upset the Orange Land Whale and his slavish lickspittle advisors.  Now, the gloves are off and oil is back on the menu again.  Art!

$1,000,000 in damages

This is the refinery at Novokuibyshevsk, in Samara, one of Ruffia's biggest and most important refining plants, so of course - obviously! - it had zero air defences.  The thinking might have been 'We're 500 kilometres from the khokhols, what can possibly go wrong?'  Well, this can.  The fireball here is so enormous because other and wiser observers claim it hit one of the distillation towers head-on, making this a verrrry expensive firerwork display.

 Looking At September

For the visit down south to visit Bovington Tank Museum, and Darling Daughter has advised that they are looking at an Airbnb for Friday and Saturday night, so we can have two whole days of wandering round Bovvie, as we afficionados call it.  Yes, I've been before, twice, on a solo motoring trip, and it's a verrrry long journey.  Art!

That's a Matilda I, as used by the BEF in France 1940, and a Comet, as used by the BLA in Germany in 1945.  Yes, R & D got a move on in the Second Unpleasantness.

Talk About 'Hacked Off'

First Of All, We Are Not Talking British Slang

In the Allotment Of Eden, we are wont to say 'I am hacked off about the weather', because it's too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry, usually all four in the same day.  Guess who was surprised when he went to Google an image for this, imagining there would be scads of purple-faced ranters annoyed about Whatever?  Art!

Yes, that is Hugh Grant, quintessential British actor - whose more recent roles have shown that as he has matured he has only gotten better at being a thespian - who was one of the victims of the 2010 phone-hacking scandal here in the UK.  'Hacked Off' is a campaign for press accountability and non-intrusion, and if you want to be both depressed and enraged at hack* journos, Google 'Milly Dowler'.

ANYWAY 'Hack' is also short for 'Hackney', a horse that is let out for hire, and by a process of transference, the word 'Hack' also came to be associated with horse-drawn taxi-cabs.  Hence the South Canadian usage of 'hack' for a motorised taxi-cab.  This explains a joke that Conrad, having been gifted a South Canadian illustrated book of jokes, found obscure:  Q.  Who took the first taxi-ride in history?  A.  George Washington; he took a hack at the cherry tree.  Art!

From Hugh Grant to George Washington, we cover all bases.

Inevitably, none of these are the kind of hack or hacking or hacked that BOOJUM! means today.  Let me return to my Collins: 'Hack: verb; Intransitive; to manipulate a computer program skilfully, especially to gain unauthorised access to another computer system'.

Now we're cooking on Gas Mark 1.75.  Art!

Unless you've been living in an underwater environment at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, you'll have heard about Aeroflot getting hacked to the nth degree on July 28th.  The picture above is actually a complete inversion of what happened, since all their aircraft are intact - note no use of the word 'safe' in this sentence - and their crews are alive, it's just that their entire IT infrastructure has been destroyed by the Ukrainian and Belarussian hackers.  With no backups.  And the hackers were in these systems for a year without being detected.  Watch some Aeroflot and FSB staff members try to mimic birds and leap from windows.  Art!

Thanks to 'Jason Jay Smart' for providing further hacky details on his Youtube channel.  My title today is a lot pithier than his: "Putin's Digital Empire Crashes - Blackouts Hit 60 Ruffian Regions".  The bank you see above was one of three that were also hacked.

22nd July 2025: Sberbank, Alfabank and Tinkoff banks, 3 of Mordorvia's largest banks, went dark on this date.  Mobile apps failed, credit cards stopped working, online transfers could not be made.  Orcs could not access their pay and thus emptied out every cashpoint in the kingdom.  Hacked off!  Art?

24th July 2025: That's the Ruffian for 'Beeline', alongside Megafon and Rostelco, another 3 of their largest phone operators, which were hit with co-ordinated DDOS attacks - essentially swamping their websites with a gigantically enormous number of bot-generated calls - causing their services nationally to 'tank' - stop me if I get too technical - and teh Interwebz to die on it's bottom.  Government entities unable to operate.  Art!

26th July 2025: Apps for groceries and scooter delivery services fail at Vkusvilli and Samocat.  Art!

Hmmm - in Roman not Cyrillic

29th July 2025: Airnet, the biggest internet provider in Saint Petersburg, Mordorvia's second largest city, goes offline thanks to - you may be ahead of me here - hacking.  Art!

30th July 2025: Sorry I have to use a generic supermarket picture for this one, JJS said something like 'Dubton' and I tried Google, which suggested 'Dubrotsen', which doesn't exist <shrug>.  Whichever, their 900 stores were hit by hackers, which caused their HQ to suspend operations totally, as their distribution centres weren't working.  The DC is an enormous storage space as big as an aircraft hangar for a 747, where wholesale supplies are sent for onward movement to individual supermarkets.  Ooops.

Let me also add in another picture, this one taken from 'WarTranslated' over on Twitter.  Art!

The authorities in Mordorvia are convinced that shutting off teh Interwebz will disorient Ukrainian drones flying over their hellscape, which explains the heavy shutdowns in western Ruffia.  Never mind that it doesn't work and condemns the orcs to phone internet service once ever two days on average, all the citizens ought to rejoice at being reduced to the Soviet era in terms of technology!

All of these hacks are intended to inconvenience the average everyday orc as much as possible, and starkly bring home to them that, yes, their Special Idiotic Operation has turned into the 'W' word  - war.  Cut No. 951,103 of a million.

Thinking Time With Edna

Conrad appreciates these walks as there are few distractions, bar other dogs being walked, so I can muse un-interrupted.  Today I remembered to take my camera along.  Art!

This is the side plot of what Wonder Wifey called the 'Narnia House', which is when this was all garden, and a lamp-post could be glimpsed through the foliage.  The previous owner excavated those trenches years ago, then sold the house and the site was left derelict for years, until a newer owner had begun re-excavating and laying foundations for Something.  We shall see what gets constructed over the summer and autumn.

Thinking Time With Edna The Redux

I've posted before about Number 53 Tandle Hill Road, but can I find the post?  NO I cannot.  Ergo teh Interwebz.  Art!

A bit of an oddity, this one.  It stood deserted for years; not derelict as the house and garden had basic maintenance, yet there were never any 'For Sale' signs up at any point.  Unless they went up and down in less than a week.  A fortnight ago I noticed that the front garden had been partially dug-up and a mysterious miniature Black Monolith installed.

     Today - Art!

GONE!

They must have bought it at pennies on the pound if they can afford to completely destroy it and build a new house from scratch.  I did check out the builder's website, and have to say they seem to be a totally reputable and decent company, but they only list completed works - Art!

Expect to see an update in a year or so.  Maybe sooner? as the art of house construction is a foreign field to Conrad.

Conrad Is - Apprehensive

You know how it is if you're a 'Judge Dredd' fan.  First you have to explain that no, you do not actually support a judicial system that involves instant execution for having an untied shoelace, where there is no appeal and your only hope of not spending 20 years in an iso-cube is to be 'Futsie', which is slang for 'Homicidal Maniac Unable To Cope With The Big Meg'.

Also, DO NOT MENTION the 1995.  It does not exist.  Anyone maintaining otherwise will be treated to a dose of the Remote Nuclear Detonator, then re-wound in time and RND'd again.  Art!

Karl Urban, bless him staying in character and never once taking his helmet off, absolutely nailed Ol' Stony Face and has said he'd do a sequel in less than the space of a bionic heartbeat.  We shall see.  Probably due out at the same time as Swift complete Number 53.

I do have a vlog by The Critical Drinker cued up, which mentions Tia Waitiki as the director in question,  which I haven't watched yet, nor have I clicked on either of the two items above, for - Conrad is apprehensive.

Did Dumplings

There was goulash to use up, so I followed a suet-free dumpling recipe to beef* it up a bit and here they are.  Art!

They swelled up, rather.  The recipe said cook for 20 minutes but I only gave them 10, as the goulash would have burnt if it cooked any longer, and they were somewhat doughy and undercooked.  Never fear, I have another 8 in the fridge waiting to be used in the Sausage Stew and they will definitely get the full 20 minutes.  I'll let you know.

Finally -

Now to tackle my laundry.  My rock 'n' roll lifestyle strikes again.

Walker!

Do Not Castigate Us For Being Ambiguous

For it is our stock-in-trade.

Here a slight aside.  'Castigate' means to 'chastise severely' lest ye be unaware, and it hails - inevitably - from the Latin <spit hack> 'Castigare', meaning 'Forced to be pure'.

Well, if Cordell Walker enters the bar like that, you'd suddenly find yourself becoming pure and wholesome, lest he turn your body into a pretzel requiring 8 hours of surgery to untwist.  Incidentally, it ran for 9 seasons, so some of you are still human responsible for it's longevity, and Conrad suspects that Chuck hitting 61 might be one reason it stopped.

Then there is that particular brand of uisge beathe, as the Gaels have it, and Conrad would not recommend drinking it pure, rather dilute it with ice and soda or your insides will not be happy with you.  Art!

Then we might - just might - be talking about this entertaining, satirical and only vaguely-true story (fie on thee, Alex!), featuring a bravura performance by Ed Harris, as the South Canadian mercenary leader who became president of Nicaragua.  Honest.  Trust me, bro.

Here another aside - Alex Cox is responsible for the world's largest student film, 'Bill The Galactic Hero'?  This deserves it's own Intro and w

ANYWAY no we're not talking about 'Walker'.  Art!

"Get away from her you BITCH!"
One of the most heartfelt lines in cinema

Here we have 'Aliens' P-5000 Powered Loader, which might be stretching things a little if being described as a 'walker' since it's more of a 'stamper', with fallen arches a design feature.  Ellen's skill and dexterity with it gives her a lethal left and right cross, a crushing handshake and built-in blowtorchery.  Pure class.

Not, however, what we're focussing on here.  Art!

Voila, the 'All-Terrain Scout Transport' from the 'Starry Watz' franchise, being a bipedal walking war machine occasionally nicknamed 'Chicken Legs', but not to the crew's face or in front of Darth Vader, who is known to have minus sense of humour.  Coming in at nine yards tall - Imperial measurements, doncha know - it suffers problems if the terrain surface is composed of rolling logs.  Conrad wonders if it has an 'Emergency Sit' button to resolve difficulties like that, or would that make it look too much like a broody hen?  Just wondering.  Art!

Possibly ungainly, definitely deadly, this is the 'Exo-suit' or 'Prawn-Mech' from 'District 9', and the reason it's not used to the best of it's abilities is because the operator is a human - only partly, by this point - Wikus Van Der Merwe.  He bimbles about and bumbles his way through the various weapons, slaying the corporate gunslingers, despite having exactly 0% experience in using a Mech-Prawn*.  Art!

Walker chuck truck

Okay, let's get to the meat of this matter.  Your Humble Scribe was intrigued by a sidebar item viewed on my news feed, which tends to regurgitate the same tired old persiflage about writing wills or solar panels.  Art!

So this one stood out.  Since we are not knee-deep in walking war machines, and the ones above are entirely fictional, there has to be a failure at the end of this tale, that may yet still be interesting to follow.  Art!

Hmmm bit of a lightweight compared to Ol' Chicken Legs.  The narrator claims that it could move at 35 m.p.h. which is being a tad economical with the truth, because we're looking at a computer animation here.  The reality is a little less rapid.  Art!

Meet the GE 'Pedipulator', where they tried to solve the problem of having mechanical arms operated remotely by a puny human, by having them attached to a cabin, instead of a 'suit' worn by the user.  Their client here was the South Canadian Army, who wanted a machine that could navigate rough terrain, sloping terrain, fallen trees, upright trees and dense vegetation, all the while carrying 1,000 pounds in cargo or infantry.  Art!

The operator was strapped in, not sitting down, as he needed to adjust the vehicle's stance based on his own reaction to position and tilt as the Pedipulator moved across terrain.  On it's 12-foot telescoping legs.  Did I mention them yet?

By now you may be wondering what stopped the Pedipulator from being front and centre in the invasion of the Dominican Republic (April - September 1965)**?

For one thing, it was a gas hog.  I can't find figures for consumption, only the narrator bloviating, but at best 1 mile per gallon, and perhaps only a quarter of that, since his comparison is with a tank, that known gas hog of gas hogs.

The centre of gravity was also verrry high, making it dangerously prone to overbalancing and toppling, and if it fell over, there was no way for it to get back up on it's feet again.  Ooops.  Art!

None of that put off a modeller, who created this resin version, doubtless to grace a wargamer's table in a 'What If?' scenario set in Vietnam in 1967, as the US alliance closes in on Hanoi -

I think that's enough of Walkers for today.  Art!

No need for legs or blowtorches, but may consider chicken or prawn

Conrad Gloasts

I'm allowed to, it says so here in the Terms & Conditions.

What am I blethering about?  O I thought you'd never ask!  Art?

This is one of the original volumes from 1966, bagged for under £40 and in Very Good condition - I'll say, it even has a plastic cover over the dust-jacket.  The seller was 'Holybourne Rare Books' and whilst the P & P was a bit pricey, the packaging was excellent and thorough, and it arrived mid-afternoon Wednesday after ordering late on Monday.  Definitely would use them again.  Art!

Yes, I already have the 'Naval & Military Press' softback, and here's an illustration of the softback reprint (top) and the original (bottom).  Art!

The original is miles better thanks to the colours used, which get completely lost in the reprint's monochrome reproduction, not to mention there are a lot of fold-out maps in the original.

To Quote "Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads"

'It's the only thing to look forward to, the past' as their theme song goes.  We could have a whole item about this sitcom, and it's predecessor, "The Likely Lads", except not today.  Sorry.  Besides which, our South Canadian cousins might need subtitles, thanks to their Geordie acce

ANYWAY a couple of months ago Your Humble Scribe finally set up one of the 'Modern Warfare' hex-and-counter games purchased at 'Crisis Point'.  This was a series of S & T games published in the mid-Seventies, looking at their near future, and our distant past, of 1980.  Art!

This game is 'DMZ', the acronym for 'De-Militarised Zone', which refers to the boundary between the Norks and the Sorks, who may I remind you are still at war, no peace treaty ever being signed.  The DMZ itself is that yellow hexline stretching across the board.  Here the counters are all set up prior to the first move.

First move: the DPRK (Norks) have advanced to contact into the DMZ.  That long line of units lower port are a mixed bag of Sork and South Canadians, whom cannot move freely for several turns, reflecting Nork surprise.

First move of 15.  I shan't bore you with a blow-by-blow account, so expect only highlights of what transpires.  I have already mucked up the first moves Nork combat - in my defence the rule about Turn One and Two was pretty well hidden away.

Nothing Whatsoever To Do With Anything Military

Conrad was well aware that he had 12 remaindered pork sausages in the fridge that needed using up, before they gained a decorative coating of salmonella and mould.  There are things I won't eat, just to be clear, apart from pineapple and parsnip.  Art!

Here is last night's cooking, simmering on the hob.  Sausages successfully stewed.  It has quite the bite as I used the 'Guess and shake the container manfully' method of measuring out chilli powder.  There is enough to last into next week without me making a Sunday Stew.  Without taking into consideration the pack of remaindered sausages and pork loin sitting in the freezer, alongside the ice cream.

Finally -

I am typing this on August 1st, so Dry July has passed on by and I will be sinking a few Old Speckled Hens tonight.  Wish me luck.  And hopefully no Translator calls lasting an hour that begin five minutes before end of business.

* Or should that be a Prawn-Mech?

**  Confess, you've never heard of this, have you?
