The Name's Bond. Blames Bond

Ha!  Sometimes I Amuse Even Myself

Having invoked the spirit of 007, I shall prod Art into semi-sentience and get him to supply a bit of click-bait.  Art, you Neanderthal sloven!

I always remember what Mani, Economics graduate, said of the London Stock Exchange - "The biggest casino in the world", so there's a bit of connection with today's title.  For this Intro is another inspired by the caustic commentary on disastrous CEOs and how they destroyed businesses.  This time the victim was 'First Republic Bank', who had a pedigree going back to 1985.  Art!

Jim Herbert, CEO of FRB during their time of troubles.

Conrad vaguely remembers hearing about FRB going toes-up financially, last year, alongside a few other banks such as 'Signature Bank' and 'Silvergate Bank', the latter which got a dishonourable mention in the blog.  These two banks were vulnerable to 'contagion' in the scamble cryptocurrency market as they had invested heavily in magic beans.  FRB were a different case.  Art!

They promoted themselves as being a bank for the wealthy, rather than snivelling penniless footpads like you and I.  When I say 'wealthy' I mean people with tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars to invest.

Back to that Youtube Reddit, because although the Redditor did not name names, Conrad worked out he meant Jim Herbert in about twenty seconds flat.  What Red Flags were present?  O I thought you'd never ask!

NO PLAN FOR SUCCESSION: Mister Herbert, as per the Redditor, considered himself both immortal and indispensable, meaning he had no apprentice, understudy or junior waiting in the wings to take over.  After all, such a person might get a tad ambitious and hurry up the process of retiring, which is why dictators don't like nominating a successor until they're practically at the gates of Hades.  Art!

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG: Gambling that interest rates would stay low indefinitely, because if - or when - they rise, borrowing money becomes much more expensive.  Rising interest rates create volatility and uncertainty in financial markets.

MASSIVE DURATION RISK: Conrad had to look this one up.  It's a factor associated with interest rates, which can affect bond values.  If interest rates increase, bond value decreases, and the longer the duration, the greater the effect.  Art!

What the AI Art generator came up with

Conrad did a bit of digging himself and found more that the Redditor either ignored or didn't know about, because a serious issue with FRB was the amount of investors who had 'Uninsured Deposits' there.  These are risky instruments that are not insured, meaning if there's a collapse of the bank, tough tumshy, you lost all your investment.  They balance this risk by having a higher yield.  Also, the 'Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation' doesn't cover deposits greater than $250,000 and I think we've already mentioned how immensely rich FRB's investors were.  Art!

With three banks already collapsed, nervous investors at FRB began to withdraw their monies, leading to a run of $100 billion being taken out of the bank in March 2023.  Here is where matters get interesting; FRB had a loan-to-deposit ratio of 111%, meaning they had loaned out a lot more money than they had in reserve.

     Ooops.

By 19th March the companies that rate financial institutions had downgraded FRB to 'Junk' and it's share value plummeted, which merely triggered panic as investors sought to withdraw money before it vanished into the ether.

First Republic's stock value in 2022 had been $150 per share; by April 28th of 2023 it had fallen to $2, despite $30 billion being pumped into their coffers to try and stave off collapse.  Staff were now being laid off on this date, as well as people quitting when they saw the writing on the wall.

Now, the Redditor on Youtube got the timeline wrong, stating that the company went under in a week when it was more like four or five.

Does the blame for this really lie with the CEO?  In a word, yes, because it was his investment strategy and direction from the top that made them so vulnerable.  Even though FRB didn't dabble in cryptocurrency scambles, the riotous upheaval caused by the failure of FTX and Binance made everyone twitchy and nervous.  Kind of a Flock Of Black Swan Events.  Art!

O the travails of being a banker!  Remember all this was done without ill-intent or a desire to rip people off.  Because -

Bernie Has Competition!

Madoff, just so we're clear.  Yes, Ol' Bern jitterbugged his way off this mortal coil back in 2021, having spent his life since 2009 in prison.

Well, there are Young Turks coming up the rankings, no doubt inspired by Morals-Free Madoff, and here's a Twitter article that's relevant.  Art!

Conrad has to say he's interested and wonders if a few second-hand copies m

NO!  No more books, said my conscience.  Not until you've at least read "Wild Swans" or "Wolf Hall"

ANYWAY this looks to be the story of Sam Bankman-Fried and his scamble crypto organisation FTX, who only managed to embezzle a paltry $8 billion.  Must try harder*!

The Orange Land Whale Strikes Again

Conrad is firmly of the opinion that Donald Judas Trump will spend the entirety of his Presidency playing golf, because Presidenting is hard, and what else is a Vice President for?  Art!

In other words, he was merely blowing smoke on the campaign trail, as this little item is about the 20% tariffs he threatened to impose on everything imported into South Canada.  Now that the worm in his brain has gone to sleep again, patient people with big colourful crayons have been trying to get him to understand 'Blanket Tariff Bad'.  Then, of course - obviously! - they have to try and explain the metaphor being used, without actually using the word 'Metaphor'.

O that felt satisfying, we've not criticised Pumpkinhead for ages, it seems.

What A Leading Question

O boy, there's a lot to unpack here.  Firstly, let me mention the South Canadian journalist Julia Davis, who runs "Ruffian Media Monitor" and who regularly has these frothing maniacs translated.

This jowly sot is one Guryulov, whom looks older that I do despite being 10 years younger.  Vodka is bad for you.  He's got it kind of wrong here, nobody calls us 'Great Britain' any more, do they?

The second part of his sentence has SO MANY elements to it that we'd be here next Thursday were I to list them.  Here's one.  Art!

Finally -

Today was a day of four seasons in one day, and all of them wet and miserable.  There was more snow, the novelty of which rapidly palls, and wind, and to top it all off, the roadworks outside started up again, forming a wonderful sonic background to my telephone work.  This will be my fate for the next two weeks <sad face>.  No, they're not loud enough for me to have to go on Team Chat and inform that I simply cannot do my job, just loud enough to be irritating.

I think I will now take refuge in the kitchen, make a bit of scoff and test-drive my new food processor.  Doubtless there will be pictures, you lucky people.

*  But they did manage this in mere years, not decades.

Feeder Frenzy

No!

This is not about the band, who might still be around, as I've not bought any of their CDs since oooooh 2010? which was "Pushing The Senses".  Art!

No, I've no idea what the cover is supposed to be either.  It does have a few belting songs on it, suc

ANYWAY you might - just might - be thinking that this is Conrad pushing his pro-shark agenda again, because Sharks Really Are Our Friends even when they do let their manners slip and fall into a feeding frenzy.

     Nope.

Come on, does the title say "Feeding Frenzy"?  NO IT DOES NOT.  Pay attention.  How can you possibly expect to solve murder mysteries if you're not able to read a title properly?  Art!

Just so we're clear, this is probably Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and it's what came up when I put in the search term "Georgian Folk Music".  I like what I've heard so far, even if I cannot understand a word - 'Georgian' was not a language option when I was at school - and it seems to share a love of the flute with Eastern European folk music.  Art!

Sharky party hearty

No, Dougal, today's Intro is about predators, yes, but of the Hom. Sap. kind, who prey on the credulous, gullible and trusting.  For Lo! we are back on the subject of Bernie Madoff again.  Not going to apologise for returning to this theme, as a $40 billion scam has long legs.  The Madoff Victim Fund has only just finished making payments to the investors who were bilked by this crook.  Art!

From CBS

The thing about this part of the report is that the CBS reporter doing the presentation is not named on-screen, which is pretty unfair.  Conrad has done some digging with no results.  He said that the story shifted to Greenwich Village, in the as-hard-to-pronounce-as-English-towns location of Connecticut.  This town, for reasons obscure to me, is the Hedge Fund Capital of South Canada, and guess who made a beeline for it when he needed more sheep to fleece?  No, Dougal, not Melvin Kaminsky; Bernie Madoff.  Art!

Art!

Dog Buns, you are going to get - what's that?  Yes, that is a young Mel Brooks, under his actual name.  Yes, he served as a Combat Engineer in the Second Unpleasantness, where he said the two things he liked least in the world were 'Combat' and 'Engineering'.

ANYWAY if we can move on from Art's hijacking of the Intro?  Thank you so much.  Really appreciate it.  Art!

Definitely not Melvin Lewinsky

You see, this is where Ol' Bernie's fraud acquired an international aspect.  Here there were lots of hedge fund management companies who had billions of dollars of client's money to invest.

You may be ahead of me here.

Who did they do business with?  Why, none other than Ol' Bernie.  One of the biggest companies that did business with him was Fairfield Greenwich Group.  In what sounds as if it ought to be illegal yet isn't, Ol' Bernie would pay these 'Feeder Funds' companies an annual retainer, in return for which they would invest their client's money with him.  FFG got hundreds of millions of dollars annually FOR TWENTY YEARS in this criminally-complicit deal.  Art!

FFG's CEO and wife abruptly vanished when Madoff turned himself in, hiding on the island of Mustique so as to be out of the eye of the press and burned investors.

Mystery Un-named CBS Reporter then tracked down a very prominent South Canadian lawyer, David Boies, who was representing the FFG investors who had lost $4 billion between them when Madoff went under.  MUNCBR then listed a tranche of things that FGG ought to have done to protect their clients: portfolio composition analysis; portfolio stress-testing; risk management; asset verification.  Art!

Dave

He agreed that FGG essentially did 0% to protect their clients, instead simply handing the money over to Ol' Bernie and doing so for two decades, whilst also enjoying very luxurious lifestyles thanks to the money he paid them.

This came back to bite FGG on the bottom with ten-inch diamond-tipped teeth.  They were alleged to have <deep breath> committed: fraud, negligent representation, gross negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract and unjust enrichment.  They had to settle with the class action lawsuit for about $400 million and the senior executives had to sell various assets such as yachts and houses.  Boo hoo.  Poor them.

What is the onus on hedge fund management?  Harry Markopolos put it well: invest with the best financial managers and ensure that they're NOT RUNNING A PONZI SCHEME.  Sheesh.

There Is A Saying

'Cutting off your nose to spite your face', which Conrad has modified into 'Cutting your throat to spite your neck', which is admittedly a little more extreme.   Here we see this curious phenomenon in real life.  Art!

'Kadi', a proud Estonian and hater of all things Ruffian, put it well in her Tweet.

No pipelines, no LNG terminals, no ports or railways that aren't controlled by Moldova or Ukraine .. So what are they waiting for? An e-mail?

Transnistria is a strip of territory between Moldova and Ukraine, which is controlled by rabidly pro-Ruffian politicians.  Art!

I think the technical term is 'exclave' because it has no physical contact with Modern-day Mordor.  Since Ukraine cut off their gas supply things are getting parlous: no heating or cooking, schools being shut down, factories stopping, and rolling blackouts being introduced.  It's highly likely that a significant proportion of the population will decamp into Moldova, where many have relatives.

Remember, three years ago it was Bloaty Gas Tout's aim to physically occupy Ukraine and thus link up with Transnistria.  0% chance of that happening now.  Hey, Gazprom, how's that film about Ukrainians eating their hamster faring at present?

Our Journey With Bernie The Right-On Wrightson

Can't have people misunderstanding whom the Bernie here is.  Time to look at #57, 'Lost In The Woods', and yes, it is available on teh Interwebz.  Art!

Fascinating insight, Bernie, but I have no idea what I'm looking at here.  Or is that the point?

It Sounds Awful Outside

Your Humble Scribe did his usual Sunday constitutional into Lesser Sodom this afternoon, and boy was it treacherous underfoot.  Inches of slush to negotiate.  Now, with the curtains firmly drawn, I can hear the wind rushing outside as it drives rain onto the windowpane.  Art!

It never rains but it monsoons, does it?  Conrad profoundly grateful at times like this that he now works from home.  If it's bad here, how much worse must it be at Hebden Bridge?  That's the market town where the local river runs through the town centre, which is picturesque in summer.  In winter .....

Finally -

You may not be aware,  but there is a thing known as "Tunis Cake", and yes, it is known after the capital of Tunisia.  The legend goes that the recipe was discovered by a British soldier in that country in 1943, who also happened to be a Master Baker NO SNIGGERING AT THE BACK! and who copied it and took it back to This Sceptred Isle.  It was seen as an acceptable substitute for Christmas cake, which requires a lot of dried fruit, a tough ask in wartime.  Art!

It's a sponge cake that also uses ground almonds, and is topped with ganache.  Conrad would be happy to make it, apart from the fact that he'd need to eat it all himself <the horror the horror> and I've barely made a dent on the Barm Brack.

Perhaps in time for Quiet Tom's birthday visit?

     I will let you know.

Our Trad Look Back

Conrad doesn't think it quite follows the plot here on BOOJUM! where we use Finnish or Lithuanian or, of late, Romanian, to make us seem more exotic than we really are.  Art!

The Misery Of Mathematics

No! This Isn't A Duplicate Title
Dog Buns! read it properly.  Yesteryon's title was "The Mathematics Of Misery" which is completely different.  Okay, okay, mostly different.  Okay, okay, somewhat similar.  But completely different at the same time.
In case you were wondering, Conrad's brain is structured in such a way that makes the crafting of words very easy, as witness the five thousand iterations of BOOJUM! to date.  Numbers, on the other hand, are very much a closed book and Your Humble Scribe is eternally grateful for living in the age of the pocket calculator.  Art!

You're probably wondering what Bernie Madoff and a rotting cod cadaver have in common.  Well, both smell fishy.  Ha!  Do you s - O you do.
ANYWAY let us re-introduce Harry Markopolos, whom we briefly mentioned yesteryon.  Art!

He told them so

Harry's involvement in the biggest Ponzi scheme ever began when he was but a humble financial analyst and fraud investigator in Boston in 1999.  His boss told him about a huge unregistered hedge fund being run by Bernie Madoff, that was generating enormous returns.  Mister Boss wanted Harry to do a bit of - well, actually a lot of - forensic accountancy, in order to analyse Madoff's trading strategy and revenue streams, so his business model could be copied.  Big bucks in the revenue anticipated.  Or so Mister Boss thought.  Art!

That's the AI Image Generator's idea of 'Huge financial fraud'.  Hmmmm thinking about the end result, not that far off, actually.
ANYWAY Harry explained that at this time Madoff was one of the most powerful and well-respected men on Wall Street, who had a lot of clout with the Securities Exchange Commission (who police finance in South Canada) and a squeaky-clean image.  The very idea that he could be committing fraud was laughable.  Laughable i tell you!
Apart from the cold equations.  Art!

While people can lie, mathematics cannot.  It took Harry all of five minutes to recognise that Madoff was a fraud, and then four hours to mathematically prove it.  Harry, you see, is a lot of a maths nerd - qualified in Integral Calculus, Differential Calculus, Linear Algebra, Normal Statistics and Non-Normal Statistics.
What made Harry instantly suspicious was Madoff's hedge fund performance, because markets rise and fall, yet his hedge fund only ever went up.  Either Madoff was doing insider trading, or he was running a Ponzi scheme.
Harry was not shy or reticent about this discovery.  He contacted the Boston branch of the SEC in May 2000.
     And again in October 2001.
     And again in October 2005
     And again in November 2005
     And again in December 2005
     And again in June 2007
And again in April 2008.  Art!

By 2005 Harry had identified TWENTY NINE RED FLAGS.  One glaring example was that Madoff's claimed 'trading strategy' would have required his fund to have purchased more options on the Chicago Option Exchange than actually existed in real life.
The SEC opened a case in 2006 and closed it a year later, stating that they had 'no evidence of fraud'.
Harry disproved this asinine conclusion by enquiring of financial firms as to whether they had done any business with Madoff?  None of them had.  Ever.  Imagine that, using a phone to call people and make enquiries!  Who knew!  Art?

Part of Harry's evidence was showing who were NOT victims of Madoff - no firms on Wall Street ever invested with him, meaning that hundreds of financial experts knew his hedge fund smelled like a week-dead fish and wouldn't touch it with a barge pole tied to another barge pole.
Then there was the rather horrid revelation that most SEC investigators are lawyers with 0% financial expertise or experience, and whom probably have all the mathematical skills of Conrad.  They could parse a contract no problem, but double-entry book-keeping was a mystery to them*.

Harry also revealed that Madoff was essentially running an 'Affinity Scam', where he preyed on groups of people similar to himself, initially Jewish New Yorkers.  Since his Ponzi scheme required ever-increasing numbers of clients, he expanded his net to include Palm Beach in Florida, where he solicited clients from the membership of his clubs and social circle.
Bear in mind that, despite Harry's persistent efforts, the SEC didn't bring down Madoff.  They had no investigation or case in hand in 2008.  What brought him down was the financial crisis that hit in that year, causing a run on banks and other financial institutions.  When his clients wanted to withdraw their money - Ooops! there wasn't any more than a fraction of what there ought to have been.
We haven't even begun on the 'Feeder Firms' yet .....

"The War Illustrated Edition 200 16th February 1945"
Kindly remember, gentle reader, that the photographs used in this publication were deliberately delayed for a couple of weeks, lest the Teutons derive tactical information from them.  Art!

Calling Sal Mercogliano, calling Sal Mercogliano!  He's the chap whom runs "What Is Going On With Shipping" on Youtube.  Here you see what is classed as an 'Escort Carrier', a.k.a. a 'Jeep Carrier'.  These were a lot smaller and less capable than a proper aircraft carrier, but if you needed half a dozen aircraft to protect your convoy, why they made a lot of sense.   This one is loading up with grain, because that flight deck has been added to the superstructure of a cargo vessel.  Conrad unsure how they'll get the grain out at destination.

This is the central pages' usual montage of shots across Europe, which I'll just leave up for now.  More details later on, gentle reader.

More Of Matters Martial

Allow me to copy the illo that The Tank Museum put up yesteryon.  Art!

The L1A1 SLR was the Commonwealth designation for the Belgian FN FAL. It only fired in semi-automatic, forgoing full auto in the name of accuracy & ammo conservation. It served with the British Army from 1954 until the early 90s, being phased out in favour of the L85A1.

This thing was an absolute beast of a bang-stick.  It fired the 7.62 mm full-sized round that would stop anything it hit and do so a very long way off.  Of course - obviously! - Conrad had to stick his oar in.

Popularised in the Seventies as used by U.N.I.T. and witnessed regularly on Saturday afternoons. Not enough stopping power against Daleks, is the consensus.

Speaking Of Daleks -
As proof that everything is interconnected, I am currently watching Episode 3 of "Department S", which was written by Terry Nation.
Who invented the Daleks?  No! Not Lord Lucan, Dougal.  Terry Nation.
Where did he get part of the inspiration from?  Why, when he went to see the Georgian National Dancers when they performed in London.  Here's a couple of Georgians in their native Georgia, indulging in a bit of dancing.  Art!

At no point do you see the lady's legs or even her feet, she just glides around as if on - well, castors.  Congrats to Terry on turning this into a ruthless cyborg.

Finally -
It has snowed overnight and as a result the usual army of sledgers are arriving on Tandle Hill Road to exploit the slopes.  Art!

A curse on them.  What makes their experience even less pleasant are the roadworks and traffic lights installed at the junction with Rochdale Road.  Good!
As for Conrad, I am going to be taking a stroll into Lesser Sodom shortly, so will need to don my stout shoes.  Pool shoes not good in this kind of weather.
     That is all.

The Mathematics Of Misery

Yo Ho Horribilus!

Once again I am minded of that narrative device of Ol' Tolky's, wherein he says that pleasant things and good times are quickly described and soon done, with little retention in the mind of an audience, whereas bad things and torrid times take plenty of description and are far more involving.

Well, you'll not find Conrad arguing against that.  95% of all the books I own are on military history, which is pretty much the go-to phrase for 'Bad Things And Torrid Times".  Art!

Take these hex-and-counter wargames as an example.  I have no idea why I have two boxes of "Squad Leader" before you ask.  That bottom one is "Arctic Storm", about the war of 1939 to 1940 between the Sinister Union and Finland, with Roger McGowan doing an artistic interpretation of a famous Finnish picture.  Art!

Allow me to bring up the map for AS, because this might meaningfully illustrate the new NATO border that Charlie Chipmunk Cheeks now has to deal with.  Art!

Erk.  Just look at all those charts.  A little off-putting.  Conrad has to confess he's never actually played this game, and isn't even sure if the countermix is complete.  Not only that, it came with a collection of printed notes from the original owner, and the relevant copy of that part-work "World War II" that I gave away years ago to Colin.  Art!

So, lots of Bad Things And Torrid Times.  Let us now change tack and concentrate on a new topic, which might have been in the title as "The Mechanics Of Misery In Modern-day Mordor", for Lo! we are going to point and laugh at the orcs as their lives get yet more miserable.  Art!

This cove is the splendidly-named Yevgeny Grabchak, whom is the Deputy Minister of Energy in Ruffia.  Note that his boss, the Minister, is not making this statement, as it's not going to be popular.  What is it?  O I thought you'd never ask!

Deputy Minister of Energy Yevgeny Grabchak announced a possible increase in tariffs by 2-3 times to recoup investments. "We will have to choose: pay more or reduce consumption," - he noted

"We" meaning "You the serfs", and he's referring to the price of domestic electricity.  Just imagine the impact of this policy on Ruffian pensioners, most of whom have been solidly behind Bloaty Gas Tout, and who will now be faced with the interesting choice of paying their electrical bills or eating.  Sitting in the dark will only reduce bills by a certain amount, after all.  Working Ruffians may be able to extort more money out of their employers, at the cost of increasing the inflationary spiral still further.  A Twitter user provided a bit of comparative finance, again helpfully including Finland.

Quickly checking 2024 stats; an average russian could buy ~15500 kWh/mo of electricity with his/her salary, an average Finn 21000 kWh, after this the russian could buy with the same salary 5200-7750 kWh/month.

A bit unfortunate if you need 20,000kWh to heat your Moscow apartment.  Art!

Thanks to "MacFellaver" for the data

     That's not all.  Art!

When they say 'Vodka drinkers in Ruffia" they mean "Everyone", especially as Ruffians don't think beer is really alcoholic*.  Sales of vodka, unlike other domestic products bought in the weekly shop, have markedly increased since the start of the Special Idiotic Operation, as the orc population tries to drown their sorrows, or at least water-log them a bit.  Messing with the only substance that makes life look bearable is a dangerous precedent and Putinpot is probably going to blame the Ukrainians for blowing up three alcohol distilleries late last year.  Art!

These are the Ruffian firework celebrations on New Year's Eve.

You may be ahead of me here - no, there are no fireworks.  They were cancelled by Bunker Grandad, who didn't want any loud explosions near the Kremlin whilst he was in it, as someone might sneak in a real explosive.  Nobody thought to mention this to the orcs, who turned up, weren't allowed into Red Square and whom then went home, disappointed, to their rationed vodka and shortly-to-be rationed heating.  Poor dears.  Fireworks, you see, cost money, and using explosive to make munitions is far more important than diverting the serfs.

I think that's enough misery for one Intro.

"I object!"

I Take The Cake

Apologies for the late delivery of this picture.  Art!

This is another Barm Brack, this time made with Earl Grey teabags from my Christmas present (tins of teabags!) and gluten-free self-raising flour because it was conveniently to hand in the cupboard.

For who knows what reason my phone was refusing to load photographs to the Gallery so I re-booted it on Friday afternoon and now it works fine.
Preparation is all with Barm Brack.  You need to line the loaf tin with a double layer of greased baking parchment, which takes forever to mark out, cut and grease.  Plus the dried fruit needs to have been soaking from the day before.  If only Darling Daughter read the blog, then she'd know.

Our Journey With Bernie

Madoff, that is, the beneficiary and instigator of the largest Ponzi scheme in history, which ran from at least 1993 until his arrest in 2009.  Sixteen years, which is how long it's taken to repay all the investors who lost money in his gigantic fraud.  Art!

This guy is a legit legend

I've just watched and annotated a CNBC documentary about Harry, and it's both fascinating and horrifying.  There's so many notes it will have to do as a future Intro.  They do point out, with examples, that Madoff defrauded an awful lot of small investors, not merely businesses and companies.  In fact, his client list before meltdown ran to 163 pages of closely-typed names.

No, you don't get a picture of Madoff.

Our Journey With Bernie (Wrightson)

Let me first do a bit of due diligence UNLIKE THE SECURITY AND EXCHANGES COMMISSION and see if the next card is available for us to use.

Ah yes.  #56 "Ramone and Escamillo".  Art!

Ewww, thanks for that description, Bernie, which we cannot now un-read.  I notice he doesn't go into the media used, one of which seems to be black felt-tip?  Or should that be black-head felt-tip?

To Resolve A Question

Your Humble Scribe is probably better-acquainted with the geography of the Libyan Desert of 1942 than the counties and shires of This Sceptred Isle.  I am aware of the layout of the counties within Greater Manchester, and that's about it.  Glasgow is Up There, London is Down There and the big wart that is Birmingham is somewhere In The Middle.

Thus, Northumberland, which county I traduced recently.  Art!

     Abutting Scotland.  Now we know.

I should probably enlarge this map and study it more closely, the better to know my own country, except I have Old Speckled Hen to drink, Codewords to do and a few trade paperbacks to peruse, so it can wait.

"Lost" Progress Report

Well, we have encountered The Monster, albeit a bit indirectly.  It's so long since Conrad saw the first season that I cannot remember if there was an explanation for this phenomenon or not, and if there was, exactly what TM was.  All part of the fun, hmmm?

That's one disk out of seven for the first season alone, and there are five more seasons to run.  Commitment is a challenge!  Art?

*  Eyes last tin of "Old Speckled Hen" with wary respect
