Pedantic Hair-Splittery Ahoy!

You Know You Love It

Because if Conrad is spending his time conjuring scrivel out of moonbeams and imagination, then you don't have to, meaning a saving in your personal time.
Today we are going back to "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" again, because once more Your Humble Scribe wants to turn his jaundiced, literal and over-analytical eye upon it, thanks to an idea he had.  Art!

I'm using this picture because the ones detailing the Tanis dig are a bit bland and characterless; a bunch of labourers with shovels.  However - that word again! - in the interests of fairness and balance I will use one here.  Art!

Busy little beavers, aren't they?  Where the film strays into implausibility is having the Nazis organise this very large excavation in the middle of Egypt.  Art!

I know, I know, it's cinematic shorthand and it leaves you in no doubt who the villains of the piece are.  Conrad can't help wondering why they're not wearing tropical-issue kit and pith helmets.  Pith helmets were all the rage for European armies being aggressive with guns abroad, notably in Africa and the Middle East.
Conrad also doubts the Nazi soldiery would be strutting about quite so brazenly, because Britain had an agreement with Egypt about both foreign policy and defence, and letting swaggering Teuton upstarts have free rein is a bit hard to swallow.  For one thing, it puts a hostile Continental power within striking distance of the Suez canal, a strategic choke point that Great Britain kept a very close eye on.  Art!

That's quite aside from the Teutons expending any effort whatsoever for an artefact that is definitively Jewish.
Now, this is not to say that such an expedition would be highly improbable at best, because whom do we know that had batshot crazy ideas about the occult, the supernatural and frozen mammoths?   Art!

Heinie 'Hardman' Himmler, totally rocking the Colin Farrell look

Yes, HH again.  I have mentioned in passing that he was peculiarly focussed on Tibet, and indeed sponsored an expedition there for the purposes of proving his Cosmic Rice Theory correct.  Something like that.  A second expedition got recalled in a hurry in August of 1939, as there were matters brewing betwixt the Teutons and the Sinisters, with Poland the filling in a dictator-sandwich.  Art!

In a semi-reflection of ROTLA, HH had intended a platoon of his SS to be smuggled into Tibet via the Sinister Union - before the backstabbing of Operation Barbarossa occurred - in order to whip the natives up against the troops of Perfidious Albion, who were stationed there.  Art!

Nowhere near as exotic as Egypt, this is a rock quarry where HH is seen inspecting and examining, hoping to find runes chiselled out millennia ago by his Nordic Teuton ancestors.
The possibility of an expedition to Egypt is not as far-fetched as perhaps I have lead you to believe; there was always the chance some scammer would enthral Heinie's imagination by asserting that the pyramids were built by the Nordic Teuton pharaohs, well-known for their Germanic history.  Don't laugh!  He had planned to sponsor a research expedition to Peru, Chile and Bolivia, in order to discover just how Nordic these South American cultures were, with particular relevance to the Cosmic Mice Theory.  Only the outbreak of a little contretemps called "The Second Unpleasantness" prevented it from happening.

If the melting man above had only been Heinie <wistful sigh>  A lot of his political rivals would have broken out a bottle of Brut to celebrate.  If he'd melted into a flesh puddle in 1936 you can bet your best stomping jackboots another Nazi would have slotted right into his place.

Okay, that's enough lilygagging.  On with the show!

Our Journey With Bernie
Wrightson, that is, and it may continue for some time, as we're looking at the illustrations he provided for FPG playing card sets, with at least four sets, each of 90 cards.  We'll stick with "Master of the Macabre" for now.  Art!

These 'How-I-Did-It' notes are an excellent insight into how an artist works with different media.  Thematically it seems similar to Card #1, "Lazarus Syndrome".
I'm going to add in another of these cards, otherwise we'll be here in 2034.  Art!

I don't think children ought to be exposed to stuff like this, although I bet the little Wrightson horrors loved it.  I'm not sure which orientation this card should be in: long side down or long side up.  Whichever way, still ewwww.

Excuse me whilst I go to turn the sausages over.  Doing 'em in the oven, doncha know,

Do You Have A Few Million To Invest?
If you're willing to risk your capital going up in smoke - and flames - you can buy yourself an oil depot in Modern-day Mordor for pennies on the pound.  Art

One imagines that Ruffian insurance companies will refuse point-blank to compensate any magnate whose oil depot has been turned into a greasy black smear.  Which explains the desperation of said magnates to get out of the oil depot business sharpish.  One can further imagine Putinpot chewing the carpet with rage that people dare to make him look bad, then ordering that said magnates shall fall out of windows and one of the siloviki gets the poison chalice.  Art!

That industrial plant is the Moscow Oil Refinery, which is on the outskirts of Barad-Duh, as you can surely tell by the name.  That little black dot is an Ukrainian drone, which ends up hitting the plant and causing a whacking big explosion.  I had to choose my clips carefully, as the Ruffian who filmed this was swearing from start to stop, although he seemed to have a sneaking regard for how effective this remotely-piloted bang boy was.
What you can't experience is the sound.  Bear in mind that this installation is only 10 miles from the Kremlin, and it was defended by - Art!

Private Conscriptovitch, who barely knows which end of a gun the bullets emerge from, and you can hear oodles of small arms fire in the background as the Ukrainian drone soars effortlessly, ENTIRELY UNSCATHED, into the refinery.
Another question might 'What's Wrong With This Picture?" because you can't hear any anti-aircraft guns, nor missile launches or even humble MANPADS.  Yes, the safety and well-being of a major Ruffian energy infrastructure a (long) stone's throw from the Kremlin, relied on - speculating here - cross-eyed drunkards with AK-74s.

Oho, Who Else Is Having A Bad Day?
Conrad will be distraught when Donold Judas Trump drops dead, because he generates so much blog content for free, all the time.  He just cannot keep his flapping pie-hole shut, because everything has to be about Him Him Him.
Here's one that will have him resorting to his comfort food (17 Big Macs, 9 bags of french fries and a gallon of chocolate milkshake).  Art!

If you look to upper port, you can see that the markets do indeed stop trading over the weekend, and that there was no latent surge in people desperate to invest in his meme stock.
Part of the reason for this precipitate decline is that people bought up TMTG stock thinking that he was going to be the next Prez, at which their stock would increase in value exponentially.  Now that this is a distant prospect, people are trying to get rid of their TMTG stock before it's value dwindles to $0.01.
Sounds like you and some Ruffian oil depot magnates need to come to an arrangement!

Believe It Or Not
I have a lot more stuff on drones in Ukraine, which I will mercifully abate for a day or two so you can lay in a stock of mind-bleach and eye-wash.  'Forbes', of all the publications you might imagine, did an excellent breakdown of how the Ukes might have managed to invade Ruffia without warning them.
I also finished watching "Godzilla Minus One" last night, which needs a whole item to itself, perhaps even an Intro.
There's also another season of "Sweet Tooth" to catch up on, and "The Umbrella Academy" not to mention "Sweet Home" the Korean post-apocalyptic supernatural thriller.  An embarrassment of riches.  Art!

Neither sweet nor home-y

See you on the other side.

D'You Want Tibet?

Okay, I Hope To Entwine Art And Life Here

'Art' the general concept, not our resident Neanderthal, whom we employ since he works for coal and the occasional nuclear fuel rod.

Right, I shall be working in references to "Heinrich Himmler" by Peter Longenrich, which I have been treating as a piece of homework, to be consumed 20 pages per day.  I shall also be working in references to "Raiders Of The Lost Ark", and guess which is going to feature in this Intro's first picture?  Art!

Not much competition there. Sorry, Heinie.

On a side note, Conrad would like to put forward how he would have tackled the thorny problem of getting that gold statuette out of the cavern.  Art!

The first step would be to have a verrrrry long rope, which would have been FIRMLY tied around the auric idol.  This would have been taken all the way outside, then run around a tree for extra leverage, and then pulled with all the force all three of the initial exploring trio can manage.  Logical, safe and rather dull stuff on screen.  Art!

In the film the wintry mountain scenes are supposedly set in Nepal, which as you can see is next door to Tibet.  Why is this significant?  Because Ol' Heinie was fascinated with the idea of an ancient civilisation of highly-advanced status living there, possessing Arcane Knowledge That Modern Man Ought Not To Have.  You know, stuff like jet aircraft, the internet and Apollo.  In his interpretation this ancient Tibetan culture was, of course - obviously! - from Atlantis, and had then spread across the globe from Tibet, meaning that Nepal would have been their first port of call.  Art!

Spot the matte lines

HH also had a bee in his bonnet about the Japanese samurai, whom he considered to be almost worthy, and that his own SS ought to emulate them, because they embodied ancient Teuton mores and beliefs.

Let us now mock famous men, because we're going into a few of Heinie's other and more - ah - 'eccentric' beliefs.  When looking at these topics, don't forget that HH was one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany, and not someone you could either ignore or slight without putting yourself in mortal peril, because he was also Head Of Police, and slinging a person into the Dachau concentration camp was the work of seconds for him.  Art!

Wotan

One of HH's organisations was the 'Ahnenerbe' or 'Ancestral Heritage', which had many branches, and which he could command without bothering whether they thought his ideas were lunacy let out of the bottle, or cold hard common sense (HINT: the former).  Thus he ordered the head of the Ahnenerbe to compile lists where a god carried or threw a thunderbolt, appeared in a flash of lightning or threw a hammer across the skies.  Art!

Why so?  Well, because HH believed - a dangerous concept - that these myths and legends referred to an actual weapon, utilising electricity, that had been wielded by Germanic races long gone, and whose secrets had been lost for millennia.

No, this is not how science, technology nor history work, but are you going to argue your way into Dachau?  Art!

Yes, he ensured that the Ahnenerbe had a 'Department for Dowsing', because you will always find water if you drill deeply enough.  825 miles is a good rule of thumb.  Plus, if an utter bafune is willing to pay you silly money for silly service, it would be rude not to take it.

Back to ROTLA, because the Ahnenerbe were also greedy acquisitive little goblins on an industrial scale, making Jones look like a lightweight.  He might poach the Cross Of Coronado - Art!

Small potatoes

     - whilst they looted whole libraries.  Twice.  Longerich dignifies this with the title 'robust acquisitions policy', which the rest of us would call 'stealing'.

The bit in ROTLA that I would jib at is that Herr Schickelgruber wanted the Ark of the Coventant to make the Wehrmacht invincible, because he was definitely not into the occult or supernatural.  Himmler had to be verrrrry wary of his occult activities, because if Der Fuhrer got wind of them, they'd have been explicitly banned.

There is also the bit where Indy gets hold of a 1947 anti-tank weapon in 1936, whic

ANYWAY I think that's enough for this Intro.  You're welcome.

I think it's an RPG-5

Kyle's Isles

Once again we re-set with the charmingly bucolic selection of South Canadian islands from Kyle "Geography King".  No strife or conflict involved.  Art!

This eyot is in the Mississippi River, and the 'IL' stands for 'Illinois', not how Kyle felt in the morning after his binge.  For your information, it is pronounced 'Show-tow'.  Art!

Chouteau Island is on the dividing line between Missouri and Illinois, and was originally a much smaller island.  Construction work creating a canal to avoid low tide-level rocks meant the spoil and new currents enlarged the original island to it's now seven square miles.  There is no habitation there thanks to the risk of flooding.  Art!

Murray Leinster

Not a name any of you snappers of whip will be familiar with, firstly because he's long dead, and secondly because his glory days were waaaaay back in the decades up to the Sixties.  Art!

ML was a pen-name for William Jenkins, who was Work Ethic made flesh.  He wrote genre novels in romance, Western, horror and sci-fi, and short stories to the number of about 1,500.  He made his first story sale in 1916 and continued for another fifty years, with a few stories being influential rather than hitting a word count to pay the rent.  The two words he needed to look up in a dictionary were 'Writer's' and 'Block'.  Art!

Mister Jenkins was also an inventor, and he invented the 'Front Projection Process' in 1955, which is apparently seen in "Silent Running" as pictured above.

Conrad instantly noticed the typo 'forrest' as there's no gump involved.

Which reminds me, I've not watched "Silent Running" since it was on the BBC decades ago, might have to look it up again.

Allow Me

As you should surely know by now, Conrad cordially detests all sports ESPECIALLY the ballfoot game, which is going to slink into the headlines soon.

There are exceptions.  The Paralympics is one event I can get behind, because it showcases human spirit rising above petty physical problems.  Art!

More power to their elbows.  All the more for being a positive and uplifting headline on a weekend that has seen some of the most atrocious, barbarous and outright horrible news imaginable.  No, not going into details.  Google at your own risk.

Conrad Incorrect

It happens.

You may be aware that I've been playing Athlete's "Tourist" a lot lately, both in the car en route to Darling Daughter's swanky new pad, via Youtube and my standalone DVD player.  Art!

They never officially broke up, having been 'on hiatus' for the past 25 years, with no ongoing reunions or new releases mentioned.

HOWEVER they did reform for a reunion tour, back in 2013, which I had overlooked, so it's possible that they didn't split apart in a shower of rancour and bile.

Looking at their album sales, it's also possible that they saw a declining future and decided to get out whilst things were still good, which is sound artistic sense - 'Always leave them wanting more'.

I would still have liked another epic like "Yesterday Threw Everything At Me", though.

Better go check on the laundry.  My rock-n-roll lifestyle, hmmmm?

To Quote Dexy's -

Midnight Runners

Let me illustrate this brief Intro with the relevant image from the rear of "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels"*, which, if Art will put down his bowl of coal -

Your request is my command.  Art!

These two still are from the same video clip, where the camera pans across from one gas installation burning to a power station also burning.  Truly Dexy's intent has come home to roost like a vampire chicken.

With that incendiary Intro, let us move on to the harvest of links.

Dismay, That Is

For Lo! we are back on the enthralling subject of the Ruffian economy, which is manifesting symptoms of what experts call 'circling the drain', or, to continue the plumbing metaphor, 'in the toilet'.  Thanks to 'Suchomimus' and. 'Joe Blogs' on Youtube and 'Prune60' on Twitter* for compiling information.  Art!

A metaphor for the Ruffian economy

Joe drew a somewhat strained analogy with the Vietnam Unpleasantness, but he hit the nail squarely on the head when standing back and seeing things in perspective, because what we have here is asymmetrical warfare.  Ruffia is enormously larger than Ukraine, with three times the population, far larger military resources (to begin with) and is directed by a despotic autocratic kleptomaniac tyrant, so the country does what he says and no debate is tolerated.  Art!

Psychosomatic Noose Syndrome?

HOWEVER! - my sweet word - Ukraine is backed by the 'Global West', an unholy combination of the EU, NATO and parts of Asia and the Antipodes.  This balances the scales a bit.  What you also have to consider is that the Ukrainians are brave, clever and good at inventing/improvising.  Ruffia? not so much.  This brings us to the matter of -

DRONES: Ukraine is currently writing the book on drone warfare.  This blog and another two could easily be devoted to nothing but drones, except I will be merciful.  Drones are critical on the battlefield, behaving like intelligent artillery shells.  What the Ukes have done is turn a novel method of warfare on the cheap into a severe problem for Ruffia.  Art!

Courtesy 'Covert Shores'

I count 24 varieties there.  You are probably aware of the exceedingly large oil depot fires caused by cheap Ukrainian drones, where possibly $50 million in stored oil has been destroyed by a drone costing perhaps $5,000.  The night prior to this blog being written, Barad-Duh was hit by drones, as were numerous other infrastructure sites across Modern-day Mordor, in a wave of over 100 Ukrainian drones.  Kyiv is looking to build ONE MILLION drones by the end of this year.  Not all will be one-way kamikaze killers but if 50% are, and only 1% of those hit their targets, that's 5,000 targets hit.  Ruffia's infrastructure is going to get a right malleting.

PALYANITSIA: Joe did a separate item on this item.  Art!

It's named after a variety of Ukrainian bread, which - allegedly - the Ruffians have trouble trying to pronounce.  Conrad's baking genes are interested.

ANYWAY you'll notice I called this an 'item', since it blurs the line between drone and cruise missile.  Art

Speculative but it does give an internal breakdown

This puppy, as you see from the upper picture, uses a turbojet instead of the humble lawnmower engine and propellor, which instantly ramps the unit cost up.  We don't have a proper price tag, only that it costs 'less than $1 million' so say $900,000.  It comes with electronic counter-measures, and uses satellite navigation, as well as 'other methods' which are not detailed.  Professor Justin 'Stronk' Bronk, in an interview last year, said that converting a prop drone to a jet version put the price into that of a cruise missile, so why not just build a cruise missile?  Economies of scale, perhaps?  Building 1,000 may bring the price down to $200,000 each.

'Forbes' speculates that this doughboy is intended for high-speed attacks on parked aircraft, which won't have time to flush and get away.  Expending a $900,000 drone on a $20 million aircraft is a winning exchange.  Art!

Repeat after me: If it's stupid but it works then it's not stupid

DIRECT WAR COSTS: Nothing good to note here, either.  We are 2/3 of the way into 2024 and the cost of the Special Idiotic Operation is already estimated at 50% more than in 2023.  This trend is expected to continue into 2025.  Government bonds being floated are only selling a fraction of what Ruffia needs to keep funding the war, and some have been withdrawn as take-up was so low.

EXPORTS: One of the staples of Ruffia, as it was with the Sinister Union before it, was the export of military hardware.  Note past tense.  The poor performance of many Ruffian weapons-systems in real life has been noted by those who are in the market for military purchases.  Art!

" - comes with fine wine and cheese -"

Serbia is supposed to be pro-Ruffian.  In fact it's been happily selling artillery shells to the Ukes.  Buying fighter jets from a NATO country is a real kick in the teeth for Putinpot.

SANCTIONS: What Conrad likes to call "The death of a million cuts" since they take ages to have an affect.  When they do -

1,200 Western businesses left Ruffia, and the ones remaining run the risk of being taken over and handed to an oligarch with sweaty palms.  The supply chain has been shattered, there is a dearth of technical expertise and access to technology, which is essential to overcome labour shortages.  China and India have been major trading partner with Ruffia - not allies, trading partners out for what they can get - but are now experiencing potential secondary sanctions.  This means very long delays in processing payments and an equally steep rise in admin costs.  There is currently a $1 billion backlog in payments waiting to be processed between Russia and The Populous Dictatorship.  This is not how you run a successful economy.  Art!

Dave Sancious.  Close enough.

TERRITORIAL LOSSES: Ukraine now controls over 500 square miles of Ruffia.  This is a propaganda disaster and makes Putinpot look weak, which is why he's avoided any comments about it and instead gave magisterial orders to have it over with by October 1st.  It has caused a run on the ruble, which is one of the shakiest currencies in the world anyway, and the Moscow Stock Exchange has plummeted like a kamikaze drone.

ECONOMIC DATA: Even at the height of the Cold War, the Sinister Union published economic statistics.  Not so Putinpot's Ruffia; a few months back they cut off access to the Ministry of Finance's monthly statistics.  Now oil and gas production figures are suddenly a state secret, meaning that they're so bad Ruffia cannot allow them to be seen.

TLDR: The Ruffian economy is in very bad shape and it's only going to get worse.

Wow, a monster Intro!  Better compensate with pictures pictures pictures.

"The War Illustrated Edition 193 November 1944"

Since we have covered flaming oil tanks in over-abundant detail, I thought this montage to be rather nastily apt.  Art!

Well, for one thing, they took enough firefighting foam with them.  I know, I know, catty.  No description as high enough word count.

Take Note, Dimya

The ranks of civilian opposition in Bangladesh swelled to such enormous proportions that the Bengali dictator Sheikh Hasina ran away.  The army refused to commit mass murder to keep her in power and 'strongly suggested' that she beggar off, which she did whilst her head was still attached to her body and her neck was it's normal length.  Art!

The Ruffian populace are gullible, credulous, supine sheep, but even they have a limit.

Bloaty Gas Tout must be living that Shakespeare phrase "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown"

Kyle's Isles

A more tranquil item than war and civil strife.  "Geography King" chose Fisher's Island in New York state.  Art!

Only four miles square, it's a lot closer to Connecticut than the rest of New York - 2 miles as opposed to 11 - and when summer tourist season arrives, it's mostly folks from Connecticut who travel there.  Art!

Permanent population is 420 although there are over 600 residences, which gives you an idea of how much accommodation is tourist-related.

And with that we are done!

* I call it this because it annoys Elong Tusk a lot.
