A Glimpse Of Domestic Bliss

If You're One Of Those Purists

Who jib at people daring to post pictures of their lunch or what's in the fridge, you may wish to skip this Intro BUT I WILL KNOW ABOUT IT AND THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES, just so you know.  Art!

We've featured this bizarre device before, and Your Humble Scribe has seen it in person at Bovvie*.  It is the 'Preying Mantis' and is based on the tracks from a Bren Carrier.  The long body could be raised above an intervening obstacle and allow the gunner, who lay prone inside it, to peer over the obstruction and rain fire and brimstone with the twin machine guns he used.  Conrad confidently predicts an AI version of this will be running around in a few years time.

And we had vehicle featured because Domestic Bliss is tricky to picture.  Art!

Behold Sandbrook House, where Conrad is currently gainfully employed, in the service of Mulysatoof, as the glass walls in the office would have you believe.  I may be reading them from the wrong side.

My schedule consists of four days on, four days off, with the four days amounting to 11 hours in the office, meaning a 13 hour day, which is a bit trying.  Conrad's elderly bones have become more accustomed to this after a few weeks of enduring not enjoying.  It also means that the schedule moves forward each week, although I still arrive when it's dark and leave when it's dark, and that water feature is a lot less appealing when there is rain aplenty.  There is also the canal ... Art!

The Sandbrook House back gate, you see, is closed late Friday evening and not opened until early Monday morning.  Thus, if working Saturday or Sunday, this means a loooooong detour down the canal towpath, where there are 1) No lights 2) No guard rails  3) Narrow parts, 4)  Treacherously uneven footing and 5) Vast masses of rotting vegetation underfoot.  Then you have to walk all the way around Sandbrook House to the back door.

Still, the whole process only takes about 35 minutes, which is a lot more convenient than risking First Bus into Gomorrah-in-the-Irwell and a hike to the 18th floor.  Art!

It's also verrrry strange to be in a customer-service role with no - repeat NO - telephone interactions, as I've had 10 years experience of these with previous employers.  Having only 28 phone calls in a day was a quiet time in Sainsbo's Recruitment.  On the other hand, I never had to use Google Translate to work on incoming e-mails that might have been Norwegian, or Swedish, or Danish, or even Icelandic.

     Takk!

"Slow Horses"

Wonder  Wifey went on about this yesteryon, saying it was brilliant and I'd like it.  Gary Oldman as Archetypal Grumpy Old Man, running a stable of losers and slackers who have been side-lined by MI5 for various reasons, mostly due to monumental bodge-ups in their past.  Art!

Their office is the extra character, with a sleazy splendour straight out of "The Ipcress Files" both film and novel.  How does their IT expert operate?  With a giant gang-plug screwed to the wall above his computers.  Digitised files?  Nope, it's all humble paper.  Pass-code or fob entry?  Nuh-uh, access is via a reluctant door opened with a key.

Our main protagonist, River, also reminds Conrad VERY STRONGLY of Simon Pegg, whom they would not dare have cast as he would have given off the wrong vibes for this series.  Art!

Squint a bit and you'll see what I mean.  And Gazza is on a career high here as the boorish, drunken, foul-mouthed has-been who's still as sharp as a tack.

Ooops.  Thank heavens for the 'Back' button.  Just deleted everything.

More Of That Dog Buns! Crossword

Yes, I bet you're wincing in anticipation of how poorly you know the Classics, or the Bible, or ancient Hebrew or the Official History Of The Sanjak Of Novi Pazar.  Let me lay before you the 'clue':  "Lo! at a glance, The Spanish Gypsy and her dance."

     Right.  Got that, have we?

     Okay, what's the solution?

     "GITANA"

Nope, I've got no idea either.  Conrad is aware that there are French cigarettes called 'Gitanes', if that's any help.  Art!

D'you see what you've started, Dot?  Well do you?

Actually it seems that 'Gitana' refers to the Romany in Spain, which I had to resort to teh Interwebz about as nil nil nil in my Collins Concise.  Such is life.

"The Sea Of Sand"

The Doctor clearly has his own agenda, but isn't quite willing to lay it out before his audience, presumably because it sounds daft or counter-intuitive.

‘Unfortunately we are not going to be able to get anywhere near the trans-mat platform, not since it was sabotaged.  The bio-vores are present in force around it.’

‘You mean we might as well have not bothered fighting them things?’ asked Private Menzies.  ‘Now there’s even more than before?’

‘Hopefully not yet,’ said Roger.  ‘These alien horrors can’t simply reproduce overnight, can they?  And creating more black tanks will take a while.’

‘Correct.  There is a window of opportunity.  Narrow, but it exists.’  The Doctor sipped at a mug of tea.  ‘And I need to find out what this depot contains.’

Once again silence fell, this time more to do with incredulity than puzzlement.

‘Why!  What’s so important about the contents – I can tell you nine-tenths of the contents off the cuff, Doctor!’ said Roger in determined fashion.  ‘Small arms ammunition: mostly crated and boxed .303, with belts of Vickers in boxes, ammo for two pounders, artillery shells, POL – Petrol, oil and lubricants.  Plus a collection of miscellaneous bits and pieces, and some kit captured from the Italians.’

The Doctor cocked his head to one side.

‘That other tenth is what I’m interested in.  I presume Captain Dobie kept an inventory of what the depot contains?’

‘Yes, in his office.  In the desk.’

‘You could sneak in the back,’ said Tam.  ‘We knocked a hole in the back wall.’

Indeed they did! At considerable effort.  What, now someone has to go sneaking into the FSD to steal information?   What are the chances!

What Am I Looking At?

A good question!  No, no, you're not looking at a good question, I mean - Art!

This, ladies and gentlemen and those unsure, is Neptune as viewed by the James Webb Space Telescope, together with it's rings, and the bright dots visible around it are moons, including the big bright one making a fuss at upper port.  'Neptune has rings?' I hear you query.  Yes it does indeed.  This was suspected since the early Eighties but not confirmed until Voyager 2 spotted them in broad daylight in 1989.  They are very faint compared to that gaudy show-off Saturn, but they do exist, as you can see from the image above, which I believe shows the more obscure rings not easily viewable at visible light wavelengths.

Finally -

We are finally - FINALLY! - past the 3rd of January, the date that Tony's Fish and Chips re-opened after their Christmas and New Year break, so Your Humble Yet Gluttonous Scribe will be able to descend upon them tomorrow after work and order the Xtra-Large Kebab, an ability that will sustain me through 100 WordsApp queries.

*  Okay, okay: "Bovington Tank Museum".  There.  Happy now?

Even The Weather Hates Putin

Yes, This Intro Will Be About Peter The Average

A.K.A. Petroleum Pimp, Bloaty Gas Tout, Kremlin Gremlin, Putin On The Fritz, Tiny Toxic Terror Toad and Dimya The Woeful Weepy, because he salts his borshcht with his tears, not the least cause of which is BOOJUM! being horrid to him.  Art!

Instead of the Kremlin, Vladolf Putler decided to have a bunch of his usual coterie of actors dressed in uniform behind him.  That blonde to port has been identified in at least three other videos, to the point that people are filling out bingo cards about her.  So, no, these are not soldiers, they are actors who will have been rigourously scrutinised and vetted with family members held hostage.  Dimya still doesn't trust them, because as is clearly visible in one scene - Art!

     - he's wearing a bulletproof vest.  Probably as protection from being stabbed in the back, as none of the actors will be allowed ammunition for any weapons they may be carrying.

That's not all.  During his less than sixty seconds, Dimya was hacking and coughing all the way through it.  It sounded less like a frog in his throat than a slew of alligators, and this will have been the best take of his speech that they dared to put out.  Clearly something is wrong with him, and one can only hope it's slow and painful.

Heh.

'What's this about the weather?' I hear you quibble, querulously.  Well, you see, it was Dimya's Cunning Plan to cut off fuel to Europe so that we'd all freeze in the bitterly cold winter weather.  And this would, thanks to magic and crossed fingers, somehow enable him to win in Ukraine.

Alas for Putler, the weather has not been co-operating.  For the past couple of weeks it's been relatively mild, with lots and lots of rain, which is how Your Humble Scribe discovered one of his shoes has a hole in the sole.  No, no, save your sympathy, I can tough it out.  That was the extent of his Cunning Plan: I Hope It Gets Really Cold.

The weather in Ukraine hasn't been co-operating very well, either.  Art!

This is footage of an extremely switched-on Ukrainian unit liberating a village called Novoselivske, which is north-west of the Ruffian's defensive hub Svatove.  That is, it's in the north of the Luhansk oblast, where you'd expect the weather to be most severe as the further north you get the worse the weather.  Except note the vehicle tracks across open ground; that mud's only a couple of inches deep, not three feet of brown porridge.  Hence today's title!

O and about that freezing bit; they're not confessing or gloating or admitting anything, but the Ukrainians have recently hit a Ruffian power plant near Belgorod, so now Putin's people are getting a taste of their own medicine.  Art!

Monkey see monkey do

More Of Manglement

Because everyone enjoys seeing a bottomwipe of a manager getting their richly-deserved come-uppance.  This story comes from Quora, where the Original Poster doesn't normally identify the business for legal reasons.

Okay, so OP was part of a team that operated on data that came in to them, which would then be passed on to another team once processed.  Art!

Their problem was that they relied on another team sending this urgent data in to them, and the first team were tardy and unreliable.

So, Idiot Manager has a brilliant idea - she's not going to pay OPs team whilst they are waiting for data.  They have to punch out until the information arrives, and then punch back in.

The employees argue that if they're punched out, they can leave.  IM says no, if you do that it'll cost time and money contacting everyone again.

The employees then warn her she's breaking federal law (for this tale is set in South Canada).  IM then argues back that the company is an international one so doesn't need to follow South Canadian law.

Thus the whole team had to spend half an hour in the break room until the data came in.

The next day this policy was dropped, as was Idiot Manager as well.  Unsurprisingly, as she put the business at risk of a class-action lawsuit that could have cost them hundreds of thousands.  All for the sake of 30 minutes saving on labour.  Art!

And nobody was sad

"The Sea Of Sand"

The Doctor, entirely without tact or subtlety, is attempting to persuade the rest of his mixed party about the correct course of action, that is to say, his course of action.

Tam commented with an inaudible reply.

‘ “So what”? So it means the bio-vores can create an endless supply of silica machines, especially since they now have human vehicles to recycle and use for the metallic components.  You may have destroyed two or three or four, but they will be replaced by fifty or a hundred others.  Similarly with bio-vores.  They reproduce by ingesting energy.  Having drained the life energies from over a hundred – maybe a hundred and thirty? – humans, they can replace all their losses within days.’

Sarah felt as if punched.  Back to square one after all the effort and sacrifice they’d endured?  How could that be!

The Doctor stood in the rear compartment of the desert car, seeking to assert himself by virtue of his sheer presence.

‘Mere blind bashing, weight of metal, or military application, has all so far proven useless.  We need to apply intellect to the problem.’

Stunned silence fell over the small audience.  Taking this as acquiesence, the Doctor carried on.

Ah well, if it's intellect you're after, the Doctor's your man!  Well, humanoid alien looking like a man.

Say Hello To My Great Big Friend

It came years  behind schedule and well over budget, yet the James Webb Space Telescope has certainly delivered the goods in 2022.  It required a lot of unfolding and working-up before sending back any images, and at any point if something went wrong it would be the world's most expensive piece of scrap metal.  Let's have an image up.  Art!

This is the inevitably-named 'Cartwheel Galaxy'.  Most spiral galaxies have 'arms' but this one has a whole array, which seems a bit greedy, caused by a head-on collision with another galaxy.  The whole thing is about 150,000 light years across and it sits 500 million light years distant from us, so a bit far for a commute.

Fingers Crossed For Bean Sprouts

Conrad is preparing to go do the weekly shop shortly, as this is Day Four of his rotation and the car is available.  In the past fortnight I've only got there after 20:00 hours and, as predictably as the Cartwheel Galaxy being named so, some shelves are empty.  No eggs at all, for one thing.  Nor beansprouts, which jiggers up some Korean recipes I'd like to try.  O humble bean sprout, how we miss you!

Finally -

We only need a few words here to hit the Adjusted Provisional Ton.  What to witter about?  Ah!  I know.  Back in April last year Pink Floyd released their first new song in 8 years, "Hey, Hey, Rise Up" which, almost inevitably, was inspired by the war going on in Ukraine.  Art!

Big Dave Gilmour, the chap behind it, stated that it's a one-off charity deal and the Floyd have no plans to reform.  Good.  Always leave 'em wanting more.

There's Always One

Amongst Your Work Colleagues

Conrad is well aware of this because he was probably 'the one' in the office wherever he worked.  "No sense of humour" or "A sense of humour but a horrid one" even "Has pervert eyes".  I dined out for years when one of our clients described me as "The big scary man" when in reality I'm as dangerous as marshmallow.  Art!

Ah.  Yes.  Perhaps I chose unwisely.

ANYWAY I would like to regale you with another account about Malicious Compliance, where people observe the letter of the law if not the spirit.  Original Poster worked in a warehouse that dealt with computers and computer equipment, and all was good in the land apart from a particularly unpleasant bluebottle in the Sudocrem: The Engineer.  Art!

Delicious!

This particular individual was an aging man nearing retirement, and who was renowned for his unabated nastiness and general aggressive attitude.  Probably thinking to himself that all he had to do was wait out the next few months and he'd be shot of all the bottomwipes he had to deal with.

The fun began when TE approached OP and accused him of messing about with 'his' stuff on a set of pallets.  Blatantly untrue, and OP told TE to go check the internal security cameras, which TE had installed.  This did not please TE, who got louder, angrier and swearier, besides going red in the face.  Conrad, being the unworthy person he is, would have goaded the bloated puffer to see if he could hit that myocardial infarction he was so obviously going for.

Finally, by which point TE has reached fever pitch and everyone else in the warehouse had stopped working to watch the drama, he shouts at OP "If you have a problem with how I act, take it up with HR or the boss".  With a few swear words mixed in.  Art!

Rage, personified

Well, OP does just that, after noting the time and getting three witnesses ready to testify.

HR must have had prior experience of TE, and they had access to the CCTV or the incident because they didn't mess about.  Within 2 hours he was sent home.

Then twenty minutes later he was assigned to "Permanently working from home".

Twenty minutes after that his work credentials were cancelled, remote access was cancelled and his duties allocated to other people.

His job then consisted of writing up his tasks and how to do them.

OP posted this on the day it happened and commented that TE still had seven months to go until retirement, but it looked as if he'd be fired within 7 hours.

     Tee hee*!

Motley, don't bother protesting at your working conditions, BOOJUM! does not have an HR department and is run as a benevolent tyranny.  Now, toast me a crumpet!

BOOJUM! Reviews Things

Firstly I'd like to say that it's been raining for hours and hours, since I can hear the noise of tyres on a rain-slick road up here in the Sekrit Layr, and a depressing sound it is, too.

So!  Let us brighten up the world by slandering and libelling the creative output of folks, which we can safely do because nobody reads this scrivel, do they?

"THE AMAZING MAURICE":  One presumes this is a kid's film, as it's animated and the poster features two children and a gigantic cat.  Personally, I'd see about a trip to the vets, that cat is morbidly obese.  I bet it frequents five different houses and gets three meals at each one.  Art!

Or perhaps they're really tiny children?

"GLASS ONION":  My my, they don't have much creativity in Hollywood, do they?  Perhaps we should be grateful that Stan Kubrick has popped off this mortal coil and never lived to see the day a sequel to "A Clockwork Orange" got made <hangs head in mournful silence>.  Art!

Note absence of glass.  Or onions

"YOUR CHRISTMAS OR MINE": Neither.  Get out of here with your vapid venal  vileness*.

Lord Peter's Crossword

Ah, I understand this one!  One of several that Ol' Dot included which are actually acronyms or merely initials, which is definitely stretching the boundaries of how fair a solution is.  Okay, here the 'clue': "Here in brief epitomy, attribute of royalty."

     And the solution?

"H.M."  which as any fule no stands for His Majesty, as the situation is now, and was previously Her Majesty - STAND UP FOR QUEENIE**!

HM and Her

"The Sea Of Sand"

Our gallant band are assessing the situation they find themselves in, which is to say, not a good one, under-armed and heavily outnumbered.

Sitting in the back of their Bedford, Private Menzies boiled water for tea.  The dancing cooker flames made his underlit face look demented and evil, an appearance spoiled by his asking what Sarah wanted, a mug or a cup?  Did she want sugar, like normal folk, or jam like that Eyetie sergeant?

‘A mug,’ she replied, the right answer in Menzies’s eyes, as he pursed his lips in approval and nodded.  The mug of incredibly sweetened tea, heavy with condensed milk, went down like nectar.  Sarah sighed in satisfaction, able to concentrate on matters other than her thirst or stomach.   Over in the second Sahariana Roger, Tam and the Doctor were all in discussion, a  “discussion” sounding very much like an argument.

‘We have only three machine-guns, assorted small arms, a few grenades, not enough food or water and an equal split between British, Italian and civilians,’ expounded Roger, being studiedly polite and hence implicitly rude.

‘Them British gave the monsters a right stuffing. Blew up two of their tanks, and killed every monster in ‘em.  Put that in yer pipe.’

A moments silence fell before any answer came from the Doctor.  Sarah winced in advance, knowing how unflattering and empirical the reply would be.  The Doctor might be humane, but this wasn’t one of those times.

‘With respect, that is massively irrelevant.  Yes, yes, I know your countrymen were brave, Private.  But they are dead, and our opponents are alive.  No, no, hear me out.  The “black tanks” you described are principally composed of silicon dioxide, of which there is an infinite supply in the deserts surrounding us.’

Ah yes, trust the Doctor to bring things down to earth.  Or - should that be capitalised as 'Earth'?  Given that we're skipping between two different worlds.

Finally -

Let me be vatic about the next couple of hours.  I confidently predict that it will rain incessantly until long after night has fallen.  There you go, this vatic stuff's not that hard to do.  Still, it is still persisting down, which has rather put a downer on my intent of having a constitutional into Royton.  It would be more in the nature of a paddle rather than a walk.  I could take Edna for a trot and get a paper up at the shops, but I'd need to take my rucksack because - it's still persisting down.  The sky presents an aspect of what I like to call 'Uniform Grey Layer'.

      Conrad, signing off.

*  Yes, I am a terrible person, but we knew that already, didn't we?

**  A big fan of 'Doctor Who' and thus a person of considerable taste

Rimsky Korsakov! And Doctor Who

There's A Name You Never Expected To See Today

I know Ruffia is not flavour of the year, exactly, and indeed any Ukrainian readers will be crossing themselves and spitting, but hear me out.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was indeed a Ruffian, but since he popped his clogs in 1908 you can't fault him for the contemporary Ruffian state.  He was a big cheese in classical music circles from 1870 onwards, frequently using traditional folk stories in his compositions.  Art!

Also, I seem to recall that the carbonated swill known as "Cresta" used to promote itself with an animated polar bear announcing that 'It's frothy, man" and downing the hideous blue concoction in one go, leading to - not acute gastritis or endemic flatulence - but a shout of "Rimsky-Korsakoff!".  Let me cattle-prod Art into wakefulness and he can back me up on this -

Conrad dares not speculate on what chemicals this drink contained to make it froth so much, bec

ANYWAY back to Nikolai.  There I was in the office, scrolling through the musics on my i-pod - the young folks taste in music is so Dog Buns! awful that I felt only gratitude that Degsy had Billy Joel on in the car whilst in transit - and I came across "Rimsky-Korsakov" and what was labelled as "Cossack Sabeltanz", which is Teuton for "Cossack Sabre Dance" because the CD is comes from is performed by a Teuton orchestra.  Hence today's Intro picture above.  If you've never heard the tune before, go Spotify or Youtube it, because it's a 120 m.p.h. bit of bonkers.  Art!

Note the film title

Conrad has seen a performance of CSD where the dancers fly at each other with swords, repeatedly.  Yes, they may be blunted swords but they hack at each other so fiercely that one wrong move and you've laid someones face open or removed an ear.

'But - but - but -  "Doctor Who"?' I hear you quibble.  PATIENCE!

From that very same video - Art!

These exotic young ladies are from Georgia - the country in the Caucasus, not the South Canadian state as evinced by that name to upper starboard.  If a name ends in "-vili" or "-adze" then it's Georgian.  Art!

Stalin a.k.a. as "That Little Sod With The Moustache"

That font is Georgia, not my usual Times.  Stalin's given surname was Dugashvili, and yes, he was Georgian.  Before Peter The Average became a second-rate copy of him, there were precious few statues of Stalin left in Russia, but you could always find one or two in Geo

ANYWAY those Georgian ladies have very long, heavy skirts, because nothing inflames the male passion more than bare ankles tradition.  They move across the stage with tiny footsteps, meaning that they appear to glide via telekinesis rather than mortal means.

One such dance was being broadcast in the early Sixties, and who happened to catch it?  No!  Terry Nation.  Art!

He was mightily struck at how these female dancers moved.  "Wouldn't it be cool," he mused, " - if ..."

And thus the Daleks, the Doctor's most implacable foe, were born.  Art!

There you go.  Alien nation via soft drink and Ruffian composer.  We tick all the boxes.

Conrad: Yup, Still Angry

Just you wait until I take over.  The ballfoot game - gone.  Musicals - banned.  The pineapple - exterminated.  August 17th will be Comsat Angels Appreciation Day.  All rap musicians, plus Alan Carr and Russell Brand, will be sent to work in the uranium mines.

In the meantime I am going to vapourize a whole tranche of Codeword compilers, because of what follows.

"KIMONO": Yet another foreign word!  We do not live in Japan.  In fact there's a law in Japan that states all Codeword solutions have to be Japanese, loan or foreign words are forbidden and you can be fined up to ¥3,000 for breaking this law*.  Art!

"SCYTHED": No, nothing to do with the Scythians, who lived where the Ukrainians do now.  From the Old English 'sighte', which means "a long-handled implement for cutting grass having a curved sharpened blade that moves parallel to the ground.'  A seven-letter word with only one vowel?  How is that fair?  Art!

"VATIC":  You what?  Conrad is widely-read yet had never encountered this word before.  Collins Concise to the rescue: "Of, or relating to, a prophet" from the Latin <hack spit> 'Vates' which means 'Prophet'.  Art!

More Of That Crossword

You know the one, and I hope you appreciate how impossibly difficult it was.  Next clue is: "Sing Nunc Dimittis and Magnificat; But look a little further back than that."

     And the solution?

     CANTICLES

The only time Conrad has seen word this is in Walter M. Miller's sole novel, "A Canticle For Leibowitz" and as far as I recollect it's a liturgy sung by monks?  <resorts to CC again>.  Ah.  "A nonmetrical hymn."  Thanks for clarifying that.  Art!

"The Sea Of Sand"

The now-allied Italians and British are pondering their next move, given that there's only a handful of them left.  Also, the author seems to feel the need to do a bit of exposition.

‘Brothers,’ nodded Dominione, in bad English.  He held out a hand.

‘Frateri,’ ventured Roger, shaking the offered hand.

Over in the truck, slightly raised voices could be heard.

‘You effing well pay attention Private Menzies!  If we get the chance to kill those horrid mucking  monsters, we take it – I don’t want to hear about how we were unlucky and the Eyeties were incompetent.’

Nineteen:  Mouse and Lion

Sarah felt depressed.

She had good cause.  The Doctor and she were stuck in the deserts of North Africa, in the middle of the desert war of 1941, with the TARDIS gone astray in time.  Gone astray in space, too, once the Hostile Automatic Displacement System mechanism suddenly whisked it away from them.  Not even K9 to help them.

The warring terrestrial armies were not her greatest concern  No; that was reserved for the impending invasion of aliens from a dying desert world, aliens who regarded humans as mobile fodder and planet Earth as a storehouse to be plundered to exhaustion.

An alien vanguard had already arrived.  Hundreds of bio-vores – so-called because they lived by directly draining the life energy of whatever living matter they encountered – had arrived in the depths of the Saharan desert via a trans-mat, sent from their barren homeworld.

If Harry Sullivan were there he'd doubtless chime in with "Chin up, old girl!" because he had a way of putting his foot in his mouth when talking to Sarah.

Finally -

It's a Bank Holiday today, which Conrad didn't realise, since New Year's Day fell on a Sunday.  That probably explains why the buses were even less punctual than usual; there is talk of bus drivers going on strike, to which I would respond "How can you tell?"

Then, too, I feel cheated somehow because this is Day Two of my four days off.  I also came across jars of Sushi Ginger in Sainsbo's earlier; you know, the sliced stuff in a sweet vinegar, which Conrad guzzles by the bowlful at Yo! Sushi.  I shall have to ration myself because it would be ridiculously easy to gob the whole lot in one go.

Shchaslyvoho Novoho Roku!

You're Probably Ahead Of Me Here -

Yes, that's Ukrainian for "Happy New Year!".  Don't forget, in Ukrainian the letter "H" is pronounced as "G", which confused the heck out of a lot of Western reporters commenting on Hostomel air base way back in February.  Don't fret, that's nearly all you're going to get about Ukraine*.  I say 'nearly' because - Art!

Dreaming of pork chops

This little sweetie is 'Patron', an Ukrainian bomb-sniffing dog, probably more formally-described as an "Unexploded Ordnance Detection Canine" as they say in South Canada.  He's a very real hero, who got awarded a medal by Prez Zed, a man who knows the value of getting a cute animal on-screen.  Art!

"Where am I?  Why all the cameras?  Who's this short hairy bloke?"

Okay, enough Current Affairs, let's get on with Sunday's collection of links.  Yes, it is Sunday, even if it's also New Year's Day.

ANYWAY AGAIN, AGAIN Kreplach, the non-stop party in my head makes it hard to concentrate at times.

Conrad is unaware if he's unburdened himself with the sheer hideousness of life in the office as a temp, so forgive me if I repeat myself.  You'd better be in a forgiving mood, the Remote Nuclear Detonator has been for it's 100,000 clicks service and is squeaky clean and super efficient.  So, the office is a confined space and has a broadcast speaker unit that picks up Spotify playlists from nearby mobile phones, possibly due to Bilberry (sp?) connections.  Digital Devil Device technology, anyway.  Art!

That's going to break when it hits*.

The thing is, Conrad can't connect to this speaker and thus has to endure everyone else's music, which he HATES WITH THE BURNING PASSION OF A THOUSAND SUPERNOVAE. It's all rap music and it's ghastly mutant offspring and they all use the same production techniques, which means Your Humble Scribe has to spend most of the day scowling and listening to the 20th century's best invention, the i-pod.  "Conrad not a team player" whisper the managers to each other, and probably "good thing he's not permanent, he's got a little black cloud over his head all day long".  Art!

My Precioussss!

During a whole day I might hear as many as two tracks that I like.  Yesteryon I was upsmacked in the head (as the youth say) when I heard what sounded like a dance re-mix of Sigur Ros' 'Hoppipolla' from the first album of theirs that I bought, "Takk", which I believe is Icelandic for "Thanks" and I know this as I was translating from a Norwegian e-mail yesterday.  I've put a full stop there as that sentence was getting rather unwieldy.   Art!

Somebody at the BBC liked them too, because 'Hoppipolla' got used as an instrumental break between programs.

ANYWAY YET AGAIN Conrad used the Shazam app on his mobile and he was correct; what he heard was 'Poppipola' by Chicane.  Conrad somewhat horrified to learn that Takk was released in 2005.  Chicane is the moniker of an English musician and producer, who was christened Nicholas Bracegirdle.  Art!

Nic being chic

So thanks, Nic, for five minutes of remixed relief from the daily sonic sewage that today's youth <hack spit> like.

O and by the way, 'Supernovae' is the correct plural of 'Supernova'.

What's In A Name?

One of our team leader's name is 'Liton', him being the first Liton I'd ever met, Conrad - naturally curious as ever - asked what it meant.  He'd no idea, beyond that it was Bangladeshi, so of course - obviously! - Your Humble Scribe had to look it up.  There's two variants defined by others: either 'Flame Of Fire', which is pretty cool <pun intended> and 'Gift Of God', which will give the chap a swollen head if admitted, so I'm going with the hot one.  Art!

More Of Lord Peter's Crossword

Yes, more of Ol' Dot's confusing confabulation that required a sound working knowledge of Latin, Greek, the mythology of both, the Bible and Shakespeare.  Sadly Conrad is deficient in all these, as he never went to a public school**.  Here's the next 'clue':  "When all is read, then give the world it's due, and never need the world read this of you."

I actually solved it without solving it, if you see what I mean, since it was only two letters long and the Across answers had already filled it in.  It was

     "RD"

Conrad hopes you're as baffled as he is.  From the 'clue' it doesn't seem to mean 'ROAD', and Google was of little use -

It definitely isn't 'Remote Desktop' as the PC was science fiction when the story was written and 'Roller Derby' isn't apt for a description of anyone.  Art!

Possibly a little under-dressed for Ol' Dot, too

"The Sea Of Sand"

The Doctor has met up with our little band of heroic resisters outside the Field Supply Depot.

Roger and Torrevechio unloaded the arms, tinned food and canteens of water they had removed from the doomed convoy.

‘Sustenance enough.  We won’t perish from lack of food or water,’ observed the Doctor.

‘The other Sahariana had some food and water in it,’ explained Sarah.  ‘And the Doctor brought more from that truck Albert and the Professor came in.’

Roger looked for Dominione, who was over at the wadi rim, keeping an eye on the depot.

‘Miss Sm – Sarah.  I want to apologise to the Tenente.  Can you take a message to him?’

‘I speak fluent Italian: Northern and Southern dialects, Sicilian, Neapolitan, Milanese, heroic couplets and ribald verse to order,’ grinned the Doctor.  ‘Your message is?’

Tenente Dominione twitched with visible annoyance at first when the Doctor passed on Roger’s terms of apology.  Sarah could see the body language from the other side of the wadi, the officer being outlined against the sands by dusk.  His start of horror meant that the Doctor told him about the molten glass ambush.

Later, when relieved by Torrevechio, the Italian officer sought out Roger, beckoning Sarah over for translation.

‘He says that he is sorry your men perished in such a fashion,’ she conveyed.  ‘And that for the forseeable future he will fight alongside you as a brother in arms.’

Harmony in the ranks, that's what we like to see.

"The War Illustrated"

This is the back cover illustration, slightly tinted - only slightly maybe due to colour fading over time or it was too expensive to tint properly - of Issue 167.  Art!

In case that small print is too small, let me explain.  This is pretty obviously not a tank going into normal contact with the enemy, as otherwise the infantry would have dismounted and the crewmember (wearing a black beret) would only have his head sticking out of the turret.  The accompanying blurb explains that they're looking out for snipers, which is why everyone has their weapon unslung and to hand.  It would be spectacularly unwise to snipe at a tank like this, because it might well retaliate with a high-explosive shell.

Finally -

People usually do a review of the year at this point in time.  Okay.  I had a job, got made redundant in August, had a three month holiday, and am now temping a lot closer to home than Gomorrah-in-the-Irwell.  I added to my book mountain, watched a shed-load of K-drama and am practicing Korean cooking.  I still hate all musicals, pineapple and parsnip.  There you go.
