Moscova's Groapa Di Bani!

Which Means "Moscow's Money Pit" In Romanian
Conrad has decided that he likes Romanian.  It's a language from Eastern Europe but has no connection with the other Cyrillic or Slavic languages, and indeed has more in common with Italian than, say, Polish or Serbian.  The only problem in writing it out in this blog is all the diacritical marks it uses.
None of which has anything to do with the Intro, I just thought I'd pontificate a bit to up the word count/entertain you/elucidate <delete where applicable>.
Okay!  Let us move on, and if Art can provide us with a suitable illustration - NO MARA CORDAY OR EMMA PEEL! -

Apologies to "Little Shop Of Horrors".  Yes, this is the Pit Of Hell in Turkmenistan, which seemed appropriate, because this Intro is about the endless streams of money Putinpot is pouring into his war in Ukraine.  Data from Joe Blogs from his vlog "Joe Blogs", which in turn came from "Forbes" magazine.  If there are any errors then that would be down to me doing a crossword or two at the same time as taking notes.  Art!

Noooo!  That's another music from a different kitchen.  Later, pilgrims.

PER DIEM: Which is Latin for "Daily".  "Forbes" has calculated that Putin is burning through $300 million per day, which rounds up to $110 billion per annum, which is Latin for "the whole Dog Buns year!"
MILITARY EQUIPMENT LOST:  Joe gave an itemised breakdown in terms of cost per category, which Conrad cannot be bothered to replicate.  This title covers tanks, planes, anti-aircraft systems, armoured fighting vehicles, artillery, cars, helicopters, cruise missiles, Multiple-Launcher Rocket Systems, ships and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.  Total is $50 billion dollars.  Art!

As Joe presciently explained, this loss is not recoverable and means the money has gone forever.
PERSONNEL: There are three parts to this total from Forby.
First is SALARY, which comes to $40 billion for all the orcs.
Next comes COMPENSATION, reckoned at another $40 billion for the dead and $30 billion for the halt and maimed.
Lastly there is LOST MANPOWER, where the calculation is based on the missing 350,000 men working for another 35 years on an average salary of $10,000 per annum, which is Latin for "This is a pittance".  Total for this item dwarfs the prior two, at $120 billion.
Here an aside.  Conrad counsels caution about COMPENSATION, because in the early days of the Special Idiotic Operation families got enough 'coffin money' to buy a new Lada.  Art!
"It won't get drunk, beat the wife or get fired.  A definite improvement."

Once the SIO dragged on for month after unrelenting month, the 'compensation' decreased, to the point where it might be a sack of onions or potatoes.  The Ruffian authorities used every trick in the book to declare that Yuri was only 'missing', not 'dead', even if he'd been radio-silent for nineteen months.
SANCTIONS:  There have been 13 rounds of sanctions, which Conrad likes to call the death of a thousand cuts.  Currently we're up to cut nine hundred and twenty three, so there is a way to go yet.  Pre-Special Idiotic Operation Ruffia was making $1.1 billion per diem, which is Latin for "coining it in".  Now?  $710 million per diem, which is Latin for "blackouts and sewage floods ahoy!".  The annual Ruffian deficit is now running at $140 billion in the red.
FLEEING: At least 1.2 million Ruffians have fled Sinister Union 2.0 and they're not coming back.  Unfortunately for Gay Boy Putin - that's another five years in the gulag for me! - these are the educated, qualified Ruffians with transferrable skills, who would otherwise be helping to paper over the cracks. Art!

That makes it ten years for today's blog alone!

Despite Putin's puppets in South Canada bleating about how they're sending all the money to Ukraine, they have sent €67 billion, against Europe itself sending
€144 billion, and other nations sending €40 billion.  €250 billion in total - and the Ruffians get €0.  Which they will probably whine about at the UN and say it's so unfair and <Cont. Page 94>
Chifle petru câini! as the Romanians say.

Bring On Another Abandoned Island

This one is rather controversial.  Art!

Say hello to Paracel Island, one of an archipelago in the South China Sea, which is currently claimed by The Populous Dictatorship yet which is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan.  Art!

The reason for three nations wanting possession of this series of marine fly specks is, naturally, financial: oil deposits have been discovered offshore.
The Paracels have a spotty history of being occupied by military garrisons, which have then abandoned them, before another nation's military came along and decided "Nice atoll!  We'll take it!"
Expect this one to rumble on for, ooooh, decades yet!

I Am Torn

Excuse me whilst I Tazer Art into a better frame of mind

<loud sizzling>

O stop whining and put Sudocrem on it.  No, what I meant is that I've not merely seen an updated blog post on Youtube from Joe Blogs, but I've also seen Perun put up a new vlog of his own, this one - well, let Art illustrate the point.  And I'm watching you, Art.

I have mentioned Justin before.  What he doesn't know about military aviation is not worth knowing and would probably cover one side of a postage stamp.  Despite looking 17, or 18 on a bad day, he's a Professor.  Perun, the lovable Antipodean, uses Powerpoint and OSINT (Open Source Intelligence, i.e. stuff in the public domain) to create videos that are exemplars of how a subject should be analysed.  He manages to retain a balanced and non-partisan viewpoint and also interjects occasional blunt Aussie humour into the matter under discussion.
The problem is, look at the duration!  Last year his vlogs were either 25 minutes or 50, roughly, and now they're creeping well past the hour mark.

     As I say, torn.

"City In The Sky"
Actually the current action is set in a small township under a louring sky, all wind and wet weather.

‘Thunder without lightning?’ he muttered.  The air fizzled with energy and acrid scents as the hidden flying eye scorched another house, with the inevitable bang and tinkle of glass splinters.

Mike came limping along the backstreet to them, his sunburn now giant blisters all down the exposed skin of his left side.  He lurched up to the pair and dropped next to the sheltering walls, casting careful glances all round.

‘I can’t find the others!  I think we’re the last!’ he gasped, stinking of wet wool and parboiled pork.

Billy stared at him, seeing thick vapours drifting upwards from the deputy’s clothes, and inhaling – briefly, before his lungs seized and spasmed – the horrid scent of boiled human being.

‘When did the lightning last strike?’ asked Doctor Smith.  Billy stared at him, wiping the driven rain out of his eyes at such a bizarre question.  Given their battleground, the deaths that had taken place so far, the likelihood that they’d be roasted into vapour in seconds – “when did lightning last strike” rapidly occupied the hinterland of stupid questions.  What could –

‘Look at that puddle,’ instructed Doctor Smith, pointing at a dirty, muddy smear across the roadway.  Mike instead looked at the stranger, clearly wondering what on earth was going on as thought processes behind that bland exterior.  Billy looked at the Doctor, then at the puddle.  He looked at Mike, then looked back at the puddle, which showed dancing, intersecting rings pulsing back and forwards.

Completely lifted from a certain popular film, I admit.

Anecdotes, Assemble!
Our lords and masters have decided that, from Monday 26/02/2024, we will have a short remote team meeting first thing in the morning, for 15 minutes.  This rather reflects the 'Team Huddle' that used to happen at the Co-Op, which could wend on for thirty minutes or so if the team leaders didn't have a firm grasp on the discussion, or shut down people intent on gossiping rather than answering phones <Conrad whistles nonchalantly>.
So - is Your Humble Scribe expected to come up with a new anecdote each morning?  I need to get thinking about this, creativity takes time to conjure.  Art!

Conrad, thinking dark thoughts.  Or - maybe happy ones.  Saturnine bugger.

Finally -
Need to go get that laundry sorted, and bump up the word count to 1,400 if I can.

Today I Found Out About

Explosives!

Perhaps I should clarify that a little: today I learned more about explosives, namely what damage they can do and what constitutes them, including one I distinctly remember from the short stories of Biggles and his early endeavours in the First Unpleasantness: ammonal.  Conrad has long been convinced it's pronounced "amm-on-al", short "O", but the rapscallions demonstrating it used the "amm-own-al" pronunciation.  Art!

One presumes that's Biggles in the cockpit of his "Oil-swilling Hump" as non-fans of the Camel called it, thanks to the oil thrown out by the rotary engine.  Yes, he is firing through the propellor arc, no, he's not trying to shoot it off.  This variety of aircraft was fitted with an interruptor gear that stopped the gun from firing when the prop blade revolved in front of the gun muzzle.

ANYWAY we will most certainly be getting back to this later on, tomorrow, probably.  In the meantime, let us lay out the harvest of links, methinks.

The Eighty-Ton Terror Textile. !

Conrad Would Like To Proudly Announce "TOG"

Yes By Grud m'Lud.  It's not as relevant now, in late February, as it would have been in November or January, when we all huddled beneath our electric blankets and layers of sheets and <drum roll> duvets.  Duvets, you know, being made out of textiles.  Art!

Conrad cannot imagine you getting a good night's sleep with that thing looming over you, but what do I know.

Well, about TOG ratings, actually.  These are how duvets are categorised in terms of their ability to trap heat and keep your toes toasty warm, which is a bit of a problem if you're built along Conrad's lines, because if your head's warm, your feet are sticking out in the cold, whi

ANYWAY the lower the TOG rating, the less warm your duvet is.  A TOG of 1 is basically a sheet of tissue paper, whilst a TOG of 50 is 3" lead-bismuth alloy plating.

Then we come to the real meat of the matter, the core of this Intro, the most gigantic-est TANK of the Second Unpleasantness you've never heard of.  Art!

This is the TOG I, which peculiar name came from the people assembled to design it, they being the same folks who had designed the British tanks of the First Unpleasantness: The Old Gang.  They included Sir William Tritton, the splendidly-named Sir Eustace Tennyson D'Eyncourt and Sir Albert Stern.  We shall come back to this last.

As you can see, the TOG I bore a distinct resemblance to the 'landships' of the First Unpleasantness, complete with rhomboidal tracks, gun sponsons on each side, and a nice long profile for crossing trenches.  It was sent for trials in 1940 and then cruelly scrapped.

The saga does not end there, or it would be but a short Intro.  The designers, discouraged yet determined, cracked on with a new, BIGGER design, because nothing succeeds like gigantism, or so Cloverfield would have us believe.  Art!

TOG-2

This 1941 beast is the 80 ton version referenced in our title.  32 feet long, ten feet wide and ten feet tall at the turret.  This particular turret is one of four that were tried, and seems to be mounting a 3" howitzer.  By 1944 they had settled on a turret that was going into service on the A30 Challenger tank, that 'stretched' version of the Cromwell mounting a 17 pounder gun.  Art!

And to give you a sense of scale, let's have another picture featuring puny human David Fletcher of the Tank Museum.  Art!

Yes, this thing is truly massive, Your Humble Scribe has seen it up close and personal at Bovvie and it makes him look small and delicate.  The tracks were originally driven by two individual electric motors that, like all electric tank engines, proved to be enormously impractical and unreliable, getting replaced by sound conventional engines.  Art!

These are Snips from a brief clip posted by the ever-reliable R G Poulussen on Twitter, who posts On This Day stuff from the Second Unpleasantness.  What these clips can't accurately convey is that the TOG-2 was quite a nippy customer for a beast of it's size and mass.

HOWEVER here striketh serendipity, because Conrad has just this evening been annotating more of Professor John Buckley's "British Armour In The Normandy Campaign" and who features there?  Why, none other than Sir Albert Stern, and JB is not kind about their TOG designs: " - enormous, unwieldy and surprisingly weak in armour protection" which were described thus by official War Office experts in May of 1943.  Thus they were left very much on the back burner and formally knocked on the head the following year.  Art!

The fact that only one was ever made is far too flimsy a reason for modellers and/or wargamers to NOT come up with a kit for these.  That one above is a resin kit put together and painted, in 1/72 scale and will set you back £48.  Art!

This one is 1/76 scale, which is just different enough from 1/72 that you can't mix them together.  £23 and it's yours, or it would be if it was still in stock, which means some of you bought it.

No matter how small and delicate it makes Conrad look, he still has trouble keeping his toes under that duvet.

More Abandoned Islands

Let me enlighten you; the islands so-named here are ones that did have a human population, which has now declined to zero.  Because they are islands, getting re-inhabited is not merely a case of strolling up and pitching a tent, especially not given the location in some cases.  Art!

This is an on-island shot of the thumbnail for the series, which Conrad successfully guessed was Hashima Island, better known as 'Battleship Island', off the coast of Japan.  The island was the site for a submarine coal mine, with workers and families being accommodated there, up until the coal ran out.  Art!

You can see why it got the name.  It is currently a subject of controversy as the Nips refuse to either admit or publicise that it was run with slave labour from Korea, and the Sorks are predictably unamused.  There is a limited tourist trade to and from the island, where over 90% is off-limits due to safety concerns.  Can't have those nice tourists suffer injury or death like the old slave workers, can we!

Some People Have Entirely Too Much Time On Their Hands

Yes, that is howlingly ironic, in case you were wondering.  Ladies, gentlemen and other parties, may I introduce Mokso, who posts videos on Youtube where he (I think it's a he) of his match sculptures, which are constructed with - you may be ahead of me here - matches, and a glue gun.  Art!

There will eventually be thousands of matches being placed and glued into position, so Mosko does this in time-lapse, or we'd be here all week.  Art!

You may be getting a hint of how this is going to progress.  The vlog title has the word "Volcano" in it, which provides a further hint.  Keep going, Mokso!

Yes, he's forming a cone of sorts, and into the cone go - more matches.  One hope he gets a discount for bulk purchase.  Or - perhaps he owns a match-making plant and this is all provided free?  Art!

The final structure, completed.  Now comes the bittersweet moment of ignition, where all that work goes up in flames, in the most literal sense of the word.  Art!

Ignition!

ERUPTION!

Please note for safety reasons Ol' Mokky set his sculpture alight outside, safely away from anyone or anything flammable, and given the yard-high flames leaping madly from his match-volcano, he did the right thing.  Art!

The sad aftermath

"City In The Sky"

The Lithoi's lethal armed drones (which term was not in use 10 years ago when this was written, the author informs us) are not being as terrifying or efficient as might be imagined.

‘What can we do?’ asked a terrified Billy Barakan.  Dodging killer beams from alien spaceships that remained almost invisible was new to him, and he felt the urge to ask Doctor Smith what to do.  “Urge” written in letters fifty yards tall.

The pair were sheltering behind the framework of a house that had suffered total failure of all it’s window frames, allowing gusts of sodden air to smack them in the faces.

‘Improvise!’ grinned the Doctor, not feeling anywhere near as cheerful as he sounded.  More thunder rolled around the township, rattling window panes (or those that remained seated) and jarring the ground.  Despite being early afternoon, the light levels were those of early evening.

Billy looked south, to where sinister grey storm clouds were sweeping in over a fractious and disturbed ocean,  made vague by sheets of rain, sheets in the literal sense of the word, giant laminates of precipitated water hanging from the sky.

He looked back at the strange doctor, who looked puzzled and who stuck one forefinger into the ground and another into the air.

‘How do we improvise a gun or something that destroys hidden things in the air?’ asked Billy.  The light was bad, yellowish and pale thanks to the amount of water in the atmosphere, but Doctor Smith seemed worried in a way that he hadn’t been up till now.  He leaned back against the lower brick wall of the house and looked upwards, glancing over at Billy.

     ‘Thunder without lightning?’ he muttered.

Expect another party to arrive shortly.

A Little Get Together To Cock Snoots At Putinpot

Yesterday a great many people turned up at rallies in support of Ukraine, which must have rather ticked-off the Ruffian diplomatic staff inside the embassies these rallies were held outside.  Peter The Average, seeing them, must be having a dilemma about whether to cover his eyes or his ears so he can pretend that it's all still going according to plan.  Art!

This is a South Canadian rally in Washington and is a still from a video clip that shows even more people off to each side.

Evil should never prosper.  Slava Ukraina!

Finally -

I may not need to take a constitutional into Lesser Sodom this afternoon as I've got the remaindered meat already, a pack of diced lamb from Wednesday that is quietly maturing, and half a dozen sausages on top of the Masurian Polish sausage, too.  Plus a cauliflower.

Were I To Say "Big, Orange And Noisy At Close Range"

You Might Well Be Forgiven For Imagining Conrad Meant -

One of these, as they are a 747, which is not called a 'Jumbo Jet' for nothing, in the colours of the now-defunct Brannif Airlines, which was a bit of a gimmick, and these things at close range on the ground can hurl a car hundreds of metres if the driver is stupid enough to get behind the active engines, which correlates to extremely loud.  Art!

Unfortunately for all you aviation buffs out there, the real focus of this Intro is considerably less charming than the above, being the Bloaty Bafune Biffer Boy, Donald Jehosophat Trump himself.  Art!

I realise this may trigger any MAGA members who read this, which is a risk I'm willing to take.  No, we're not dabbling in Politics, this chump is only Prez in his own head and even Newsmax have given up repeating his lies.  $743 million dollars is a heck of a wake-up call, quite beside $2.7 billion, which is what Smartmatic are belabouring Fox with.

ANYWAY, as Marcus Cicero appositely said many centuries ago, "The sinews of war are infinite money", and you can amend that to apply to South Canadian politics, where the party with the most money generally wins.

If you want a contrast, the Ice Cream Bandits are now sitting on a potential campaign fund of $130 million, which is by any standard an enormous amount, as opposed to the Wizard Lizard Gizzards, who are down to $8 million.  This may perhaps be to do with having a convicted criminal fraudster in charge of their funds*.  Art!

Rick Scott-free

ANYWAY back on track. DJ Tango's fund-raising apparati are called "Political Action Committees" and there is little oversight or control over what people raising funds via PACs can do with them.

Cut to the Federal Election Commission.  This is a body of the South Canadian government that oversees, monitors, audits and analyses election funding, and there is no two ways about it: you HAVE to notify the FEC about your political money.  If you do not, people like the IRS and the FBI begin to take a very close interest in you and your doings.

So, we now know, thanks to the FEC filings for February, that DJT's "Save America" PAC raised a total of $8,508 in January.  This PAC is primarily used by DJT to pay his legal fees.

     Ooops.  Art!

"Give me all your money!  I need to -"

Their outgoings in January were $4 million, with $3 million going on lawyers.

In total, DJT raised $8.8 million in January, but hold hard a moment before you wave any flags and throw confetti, because he also burned through $11.5 million.  Here's a partial breakdown:

PLACED MEDIA (TV ADS):  $470,000

AUDIO-VISUAL AT EVENTS:  $820,000

VIDEO PRODUCTION: $600,000

TRAVEL:  $550,000

POLLING SERVICES:  $450,000

LAWYERS:  $830,000

GRAND TOTAL: $7,212,000

These vendors are going to get their payment in advance if they have any smarts, because otherwise they risk getting stiffed by Fraudy Fatso.

You may recall that Farron Cousins was mentioned earlier this week, saying that DJT may be out of cash by July if he continues this burn rate, and with only ('only'!) $27 million in funds remaining, you can see why.

But wait!  It gets worse!  Art?

You see, the paperwork for that civil fraud trial under Judge Engeron was filed as of 23/02/2024, which means the Toxic Tangerine Toad has 29 days to file an appeal, which means he now has to come up with $455 million dollars as a bond for the appeal or in payment of the disgorgement.

He's also on the hook for $111,000 interest PER DAY. or an additional $3,333,000 by the time the bond or disgorgement is due.  If he makes a successful appeal, please bear in mind that the original defamation case of last May is still undergoing the appeals process, nine months later.  Were this to be the timescale for his appeal, this would add another $30 million onto his disgorgement payment.  $485 million!

He may be a billionaire on paper, yet having to pony up this money is going to grab him by the wallet, where he feels hurt the most.

     Bring on more popcorn!

The Haul

Conrad simply had to order a couple of books from Naval & Military Press, because they were going at quarter-price and even with P & P I saved nearly £40 <wallet makes muted muttering noises>.  Art!

These will be an interesting read, because the aphorism that supplies of "Beans, boots and bullets" are essential to any army is absolutely correct.  I've had a quick scan at the photographs and Bibliography and you are undoubtedly going to get the benefit of my perusal at a near-future date.  Art!

Here I should point out that, until the Second Unpleasantness, the First Unpleasantness was commonly known as "The Great War", in the sense that it was large and terrifying, not our contemporary 'jolly good!' reading.  As a minor task to pass the time whilst the chicken thighs were roasting, I counted how many of the works in this catalogue I already have.

O dearie me.     Thirty-nine of them.  Quick, Art, change the subject!

Sorry, couldn't resist that "Rage" volume.  Bob Woodward is a legend amongst journalists, especially in the investigative field, and it was only £1.99.  Conrad does not count on keeping it once finished, just so we're clear.  Art!

This puppy is a bottle of black ink, which I need thanks to the current bottles I have being years old and half-empty to boot.  It cost a swingeing £10 so it had better last for several years itself.

The Pedantic Hair-Splitter Strikes Again!

You know Conrad by now, or you ought to, for only slavish devotion to BOOJUM! is going to save you from either the uranium mines or the organ-banks when I take over.  Art!

Conrad not remotely bothered about what this concerns.  I have a metaphor to mash!

   NO!

For heaven's sake, don't web editors bother to check their underling's copy any longer?

Let me point out that a hot air balloon stays aloft - you may be ahead of me here - thanks to the HOT AIR that fill it.  Art!

A balloon filled with helium needs to be sealed to prevent the lighter-than-air gas from leaking out.  Art!

Guess which editor and staff writer are going straight to the uranium mines?

"City In The Sky"

We've had thunder, and lightning, and rain squalls, and an inrushing tide.  Or - is that really thunder?

The wok glowed white hot and bitter, scalding metallic fumes burst from it as the gold lining boiled off and reflected the thermal beam backwards.  The Doctor dropped it a fraction of a second after pointing it and still burnt his hands.  His clothing, boater and hair gave off a thick cloud of steam and his nose felt as if he’d been sniffing nitric acid.  His primitive reflector only reached an efficiency of five per cent.  Still, this was enough to melt fascias, burst seams and crack linings on the flying eye, and it fell heavily to earth, suffering more damage as it hit.

In seconds Mike had pounced, sticking the barrel of his police-shotgun into a narrow breach uppermost on the eye and letting off a solid metal shot.  Sparks flew out of the device and it spat and sizzled in the rain, crippled and useless.

A small victory, since the other Lithoi craft remained out of reach and therefore mostly out of sight.  Several giant blooms of steam and discordant shattered glass fell over the deserted township as remote operators sought to avenge the destruction of their first airborne craft with the surviving second.  At some point in this thermic barrage Denny went missing, never to be seen again.  As with Brogan, no trace of him was ever found, and the memorial in the cemetery used an ancient pre-Big Crash photograph that flattered him by fifty years.

     Patience, pilgrims, patience.

What Air Defence Doing?

I couldn't leave the anniversary of the Special Idiotic Operation without mentioning that the Ruffian air force is getting an absolute shoeing at present.  I think the total is now up to 9 aircraft lost within a week, including a very, very expensive AWACS A-50 that rocks up at about £150 million per.  Art!

A-50 NATO codename 'Plummet'

That's not including the 17 crew, who are now ash and vapour.  It takes years to gain the experience to man one of these beasts.

The other problem is that the Sinisters only ever built a handful of these back in the late Eighties; two were sold to India, one was damaged last year and another one shot down last year.  Since there were as few as 5 in working order, this is quite a mishap.  You see, the Ruffians simply cannot bear the thought that the despised 'khokhols' shot down one of their most important and expensive planes, so -

"We shot it down" is now the story.  "We, us Ruffians, not the effete and backward 'tufties', those barbarians from Kiev.  Us!  Proud Ruffia!'

This is not quite the flex they think it is.

Conrad, being sardonic because that's so him, joked on one Twitter account that perhaps Budanov and the SBU had bribed an S-300 missile battery to shoot down another A-50.  Art!

Well, would you believe it, Ruffians on Telegram are now floating this as a genuine theory.  Can you facepalm a facepalm?

There are other claims.  The Ukes say they managed it with a re-purposed S-200 SAM, a vintage - okay, okay, an antique - piece of kit from the Seventies, which certainly has the range.

Other people are saying it was a Patriot missile, which supposedly doesn't have the range, except once again the Ukes may have re-purposed and gimmicked one of their Patriot batteries, because one thing the Ukrainians are good at is improvising.

Quite a few people have been gloasting about it having been a Dutch-donated F-16, especially the Dutch**.  Art!

NNNNNNEEEEEYAAAAWWWW eat Sidewinder Ruffian scum!
<in Ukrainian>

Or an F-16 using it's radar to spot for Patriots.

Or an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle mounting air-to-air missiles.

Would it be bad taste to bring in more popcorn?

Finally -

Blimey, that item above was only supposed to be a few sentences long.  How prolix I get when lambasting the Ruffians.  Art!

Bunker Grandad will be unhappy.  Once again, bring on the popcorn!

Every word true!

**  MH-17 casts a long shadow still.
