DEATH HERRINGS FROM HADES!

Not Really
However I bet that grabbed your attention?  I know what you're thinking - but if they called it "The Scum" nobody would read - Oh!  Sorry, you were thinking that Conrad has transferred his fixation with rodents into one about fish?

Herrings of evil.
Well, not exactly evil, but he did steal a Mars bar once.

Well you could be right.  For years Conrad has eaten a tin of mackerel or sardines* with his lunch, as they are, in his words "power-packed with piscatorial protein".
Conrad has given himself food-poisoning on one occasion with fish**.
It was a couple of pounds of white fish going cheap as it was about to date-expire.
"Great!" I enthused.  "Lots of cheap fish!"
Unfortunately I didn't get round to eating it for another four days, and then decided to freeze it instead, rather than waste £1.20 by throwing it out.
"Great!" I enthused.  "Still lots of cheap fish!"
Fast-forward three or four months, when I am poking about in the back of the freezer and discover - the frozen fish.
The fish.  Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the packaging -
"Great!" I enthused.  "Now is the perfect time to thaw and cook it, as Wonder Wifey is away over the weekend."
Wonder Wifey - in fact most humans - have a far better sense of smell than your humble scribe, who gets severely told off for stinking the house out by cooking food that reeks.  Allegedly reeks.
So I thawed and cooked and ate the fish and really enjoyed it.  Delicious!
     "Great!" I gloated.  "I didn't waste £1.20 there."
     Until next morning.
You are familiar with the film "Alien"?  The scene where John Hurt gets exploded from the inside?  Imagine how he felt in the seconds before his chest burst asunder, and you have a good approximation of how Conrad felt.

This remaindered cheese got bashed about in the bag and the resulting smell was quite unpleasant.  I daren't eat it in work, and I can't leave it in the fridge at home, so I shall just have to eat it all alone by my sad little self.

Cupset
Wonder Wifey hates this cup with a passion, nearly as much as she detests Clara Oswald:
Bulbous and unloved.  Like Conrad.
So she tried to palm it off on Darling Daughter - who also apparently hates it, almost as much as she hates the blog***, as she left it behind when she returned to digs.  So, Conrad decided to rehouse the little chap.  Here we see him in his new environment:
Making friends.
(And who would retail "Impure" Green Tea?)
Rejected Doctor Who Serial Titles
Frankly I don't care if you don't like these, they make Conrad chortle on the bus ride to work, which also means people don't sit next to him.  Let the botley begin!
"Pyramints of Mars"
You could almost be in Stockport
"The Irates"
"Legopolis"
"The Cavies of Androzani"
All the sounds of fur
"The Hand Of Ear"
"The Kipper of Traken^"

"Foxcatcher"
Conrad saw a bus poster for this film.  He's already seen the trailer.
THERE WERE NO FOXES!
That is all.
An Ox catcher.  Close enough
"Maelstrom"
Conrad has used this word many a time, and it's even in the title of a very long-gestation Doctor Who fan fiction he's writing, but never until today had he actually looked it up to see what it meant.
It's Norwegian, but it derives from the Dutch "Maal Strom", which means "Mill Stream", and refers to the grinding activity carried out by mills.
No, I don't know why the Norwegians imported a Dutch word.  If you find out why, tell me why Persian has some French words in it?
The world's first and second largest maelstroms are both in Norway, which seems a bit greedy of them.  I suppose the primeval terror of the maelstrom helps balance the beauty of the fjords?
     Anyway, the Moskstraumen:
And yes, those are whirlpool tourists.
     And the Saltstraumen:
More Darwin Award wannabees
Coming Tomorrow:
Time travelling photographs of the Great Robot Rebellion, the Zombie Apocalypse, and When Toilet Paper Ran Short

Until then, Pip pip!

* Usually sardines as they're cheaper and he's a skinflint <info courtesy of Mister Hand>.
** Only the once.  Don't get cocky.
*** Yes, going for the sympathy traffic tonight.
^ I know, I know, fish again.

In Defence Of Classical Organ Music

IT IS NOT CREEPY!
Simply because lazy film and television directors have used classical organ music to act as a cheap (no copyright in issue) sound effect does not mean that it's eerie, unsettling, distressing or the cause of horripilation*.  And to prove this I give you Widor's Tocatta, from his Fifth organ symphony:
This is splendid life-affirming joyous stuff, and you can't imagine even the most twoddish of film directors** daring to use as the soundtrack to "Young People Getting Stabbed To Death #3", can you?
Incidentally, note how the organist plays the pedals with his feet.  You need to be nimble-footed to play the organ well, it seems.
Stops, manuals and pedals.
"Church Organ World"
This is a real business, which Conrad only realised when he saw a van drive by bearing that very same livery.  They are based in Shaw, next town over from Royton.  Herein the link:
Follow it and learn more about church organs than you ever thought possible.  Including the prices - the cheapest one I noticed was second hand and still cost well over £10,000.
An Organ.  Close enough
More Chortlesome Dr Who Serial Satire
It is chortlesome, I tell you!  I'll keep it brief, as people are bound to suffer a SOHF*** at some point:
"The Grime Warrior"
"The Mind Rubber"
"The Warm Machines"
"The Deadly Ass^"
"The Androids of Tar"
"The Horror of Barney"
He LOVES children!
Mike Wendling And New York
Mike's a journalist who has written a column for the BBC website about New York, and the strangely pervasive encroachment of English culture into the Big Apple.  Apparently people use the expression "zed" for that last letter of the alphabet, to such an extent that the more usual American "zee" is fighting a rearguard action.  Plus, New Yorkers are drinking ever-increasing amounts of tea, another fact that worries Mike.  THe link:
     - but I must warn you, Mike definitely got out of bed on the grumpy side, put on grumpy clothes and grumpy shoes, had a grumpy breakfast and went to work on the grumpy train.

How the fairytale of New York can become a nightmare

Which is merely an excuse for Conrad to add this link to the best Christmas song ever and which never gets old^^:
Howlingly ironic that Shane is still alive (just) but Kirsty is long gone.
Well, Mike, you did start it with that party you had in Boston ...
The Kettle of DEATH!
No word of a lie.  Yesterday I noticed a small puddle of water on the kitchen floor.  Today we discovered that our old kettle had sprung a leak -

Kitchen appliance of DOOM!
This may be news to you, but electricity and water do not mix, especially if you happen to be standing in the water whilst operating an electrical appliance.  It does give you a nice Afro, at the risk of - well, death.
So we now have "The Kettle Of LIFE!"^^^
     Art Department?
Kitchen applicance of <thinks> VIVACITY!
Finally
Edna is definitely getting better at coping with absent family members.  Yesterday I dogsat and she didn't bark or whine or do the Dance of Desperation.  Today when Degsy went off shopping she plied back and forth between lounge and kitchen but she didn't bark or whine.
     Noble Wunderhund!
Here she is eating a bit of raw potato:

And Because I Can:
What a great brand "Graal" is.  Like an alien from Star Trek.
A most delish tin of fish.  For tomorrow's lunch.  I did make rosti (hence the potato) but didn't take a photo and you cynics need a picture or it never happened.

* Your hair standing up in fear.
**  Yeah, Joel Schumacher, I'm looking at you.
*** "Sense Of Humour Failure"
^ The animal, not the posterior
^^ You big up Jona Lewie and I'll come round and punch you.
^^^ I do beg your pardon - been typing too many Doctor Who titles.

Nebuchadnezzer

Yes, I Am Showing Off
What's the point of reading thousands and thousands of books if you can't regurgitate a bit of learning every so often?
Anyway, Nebuchadnezzer was a Babylonian king, way back when that was a really big gig - about 600 BC.  He was an aggressive imperialist monarch, which isn't very PC nowadays but back then you could pull these things off if you had 1) a good hairdresser and 2) A great big rock-hard army.  Art Department?
Old Nebuchadnezzer gazing at a ziggurat*.
And since there were no cameras around then, some of those wacky wargamers can illustrate the Babylonian army:

By coincidence, the hovership commanded by Morpheus in "The Matrix" is also called "Nebuchadnezzer".
I know, not really that interesting, but it does add a bit of padding
And tying up all things Nebuchadnezzer, did you know that there is a giant champagne bottle known as a Nebuchanezzer?
No!  She isn't freakishly small.  The bottle is freakishly big.
Doctor Who Serials That Never Got Made
I stopped yesterday in full flow, because there is a limit to how funny people will find parodies of old titles, or ones made up out of spiteful wit.  Anyway, let the botley commence!
"Accountants From The Deep"
"The Tea Devils"
"Terror of the Chives"
The Chives attack!
"Rowboat"
"The Dalek Invasion of Cheam"
"The Wry Boss Operation"
"Tom of the Cybermen"
      - and there we shall leave it for today.  Pitcher, well, too often ...

Just To Illustrate A Point
I know I exploited this cup yesterday, but the picture didn't really illustrate the point too well, being a bit distant.
Never mind the illustrations - it holds a pint of tea.

Thus, if Conrad mentions "The cup of Pooh" in future, gentle reader, there will be no doubts about what, exactly, is meant.

Coincidence, Part One
As I have probably bored you with already, I'm currently re-reading the "Powers" series by Bendis and Oeming, and have just finished "Sellouts", the first TPB of the series that I bought.
     Examine this picture:
Yes, we are talking to you
That's clearly Travis Bickle, in combat jacket and with mohican, from "Taxi Driver", isn't it?  And Conrad recalls seeing a similar individual in one of the earlier volumes.
That's not mere happenchance, is it?  Bendis and Oeming are having a laugh at us <mutters darkly about smart-alex writers and artists>

Coincidence, Part Two
As you may already know, Conrad has finished his Epic Zombie Novel; well, the first draft, anyway.  It can sit and simmer for a few months.  Meanwhile, because A Writer Writes, Conrad is well into the first short story of a planned series set in the beautiful yet sinister East Sussex village of Eden Underwood.
First story concerns one Niall Bloom, Jewish music enterpreneur, who is buying a haunted house: Number Twelve, Malmsbury Butts.
On Thursday, what does Katie whimsically say at work?  That she'd like to become an Irish Jew.  Niall immediately sprang to mind.
     What's going on?  Phil**?
"The aliens are manipulating reality - oh no, wait a minute.  You're just potty."
Dabbling (Almost) In Current Affairs
I see that "The Interview" is being released to the public in a limited way, after the following silly little man made a colossal fuss about it, giving it priceless international publicity.
Please do not Google "Norks" at work.
His dad, King Kim-Jong Il, was parodied most horribly in "Team America: World Police" but wisely kept his mouth shut.  No free international publicity.

Finally
Time for a cute animal photo to drive blog traffic a -

 - what's that sound?  Oh My Lord!  Zombie herrings are attacking!
Run!  Save yourselves whilst you can***!

*Probably the shortest sentence you will ever read that contains 4 zeds.
** Phil, long dead but still a font of wisdom.  Especially about weird things.
*** Sorry.  Couldn't resist.
